Test 1, Part 2
You will take a guided tour of the zoo in Munich and hear the information at the beginning of the tour. Hello dear
people...! Please come a little closer so that I don't have to speak so loudly. Great! So, I'm Stefan and I'd like to
welcome you to our morning tour of Munich's Hellabrunn Zoo. Our zoo in the heart of the city is one of the largest
zoos in Germany with almost 19000 animals. But the special thing is that Hellabrunn is the
11
first "Geo-Zoo" in the world! In a geo-zoo, there is a separate area for each continent with the animals that
are at home there. For example, you can find polar bears and seals in the polar world and in the "Australia" area there are
kangaroos and koalas to marvel at.
12
On today's tour, which will take one and a half hours as usual, we will first visit the Geozone

2

Africa, then the Asia geozone. We usually end our visit in the Polar Geozone with the visit of the polar bears, but at the
moment this part is closed to the public, because the polar bears have had offspring and we don't want to disturb
them. But we will stay there a little longer with the penguins. Our tour ends at about 10.30 a.m., but if you have

the time and inclination, stay here, because the zoo has so much more to offer.

Because the weather is so good today, you will have the opportunity to follow the daily training of the Asian
elephants with their keepers at the meeting point in front of the elephant house at 11 a.m. after our guided
tour. This does not take place outside when it rains or snows.
What else can you expect? In "Africa" we visit the jungle house, the aquarium, the giraffes and of course
the world of monkeys. And in the Asia Geozone, you will get to see the jungle world in addition to the
elephants. Curious yet? It's about to start.
But before we start our tour, something very important: Please observe the zoo's rules of conduct and give 14
no food for the animals! Only the animal keepers are allowed to do that. They know best what is good for the
animals. Too much or incorrect food can make the animals very sick, just like with humans.
By the way: If you worked up an appetite during our tour: Café Rhino in the Geozone Africa offers healthy
salads and freshly squeezed juices, but unfortunately they are now on vacation and will not open again
until March. That 15
Tierparkbistro opposite the Zooshop, however, is open all year round and you will find everything that small
and large hunger - and thirst - desires.
So, enough with the info, let's get on our way!

Test 1, Part 3
During the break you hear a student, Mirka and Leo, talking. Leo: Hey, Mirka!
Mirka: Hi, Leo! How are you? How was your weekend? Have you been to the cinema? Was there
anything good?
Leo: Well, there are really better things than going to the cinema on the weekend, I tend to do
that under the 16
Week. No, I went on a bike tour.
Mirka: Genuine? Where to?
Leo: To Lake Constance, to Schaffhausen. There are really great paths that are
specially designed for cyclists and the scenery there is fantastic in the spring.
Mirka: I can imagine. And, were you traveling alone?
Leo: No, I was with Chris and Ben. You know, these are my friends from the 17
Chess Club. I had planned the tour for her.
Mirka: Oh yes, I met them at your birthday party two weeks ago. Found I'm pretty nice.
Yes, and what about the bike tour? How did you organize them?
Leo: So, my plan was to take the train to Lake Constance and do a tour by bike there. You
can choose between an incredible number of routes, for beginners, Advanced and real
professionals. I have chosen a cycle path that is about two and a half 18
hours. Afterwards we wanted to eat something somewhere and take the train
home. The whole excursion usually lasts five hours.
Mirka: Sounds kind of exhausting.
Leo: Nonsense, the tour itself was really easy to do. You can ride there quite comfortably. The 19
I had come up with a bike tour especially for the two of them, because they, like you,
are not very active and find it rather stressful. (laughs).
Mirka: I understand the two of them a bit, haha. But what about the bike tour?
Leo: Wait and see! So we met at my place yesterday morning at nine and then drove
off. I had told them that they should also take an anorak with them, in case the
weather should be bad. In spring you never know, there seems to be just the 20
Sun and the next moment it's raining.
Mirka: But it didn't, did it? It was just a bit cloudy, actually the ideal cycling weather.
So, keep telling.
Leo: Well, when we arrived at Lake Constance, it looked very much like rain, but we didn't
pay attention continued to check the weather and set off on our bikes.
Mirka: Don't make it so exciting!
Leo: Well, we were on the road for about an hour, when it started to rain.
Mirka: So what? You had rain gear with you!
Leo: Me and Ben did, but Chris had nothing with him and got totally wet. 21
Mirka: I don't believe it! And what did you do then?
Leo: We drove back, because Chris was totally cold and the two of them didn't feel like it
either, the whole route in the rain.

Mirka: Sorry the tour didn't succeed.

Test 1, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Generation 21" discusses the question "Are students more intelligent
today than in the past?" with student Sarina Lang and maths and computer science teacher Philipp
Baumann.

Presenter: Hello, dear listeners, and welcome to the show "Generation 21". That The topic of
this afternoon: "Are today's pupils more intelligent than in the past?". To this end, I
am in the studio with Mr. Philipp Baumann, German teacher at the Goethe-
Gymnasium in Frankfurt, and Sarina Lang, pupil of this grammar school. Sarina:
Some students are supported by their parents, Relatives or acquaintances have to
hear "In the past, we at least learned something at school" or "In the past, you
had to have something in your head". Is that true? Or, on the contrary, are today's
pupils more intelligent?
Sarina: Oh dear, um, I can't judge that, because I don't know exactly what to learn in the past
and what the teacher used to demand from the students. I think today the
23 Students smarter when it comes to media. In the past, our parents may have
known more things in everyday life, but today young people know much
more about the digital
media, via the Internet and so on.
Presenter: Mr. Baumann, you have been teaching at the Goethe-Gymnasium for over
twenty years. Have the Older generations right? Did the students really learn so
much more in the past than they do today?
P. Baumann: (laughs) That's what each generation says to the next. But seriously, students
don't learn how to do it today Niger than before, they learn differently. Nowadays, for
example, it is no longer so important that you learn something by heart, because if I
forget something, I can do it very quickly Search online. On the other hand,
creativity and teamwork are becoming increasingly important. The pupils should
24 think and learn independently and develop their own ideas. And to the
successful Learning also means that they can try out and test what they have
learned.
Sarina: In my media club, for example, we developed a learning app. That has an incredible
amount
25 Fun. We worked in groups and learned programming in a playful way, so to
speak. In addition, people help each other in the group. If someone doesn't
understand something, a classmate can explain it to him. So we students have
much more desire to learn and are more motivated. Maybe that's why we learn
better. And I also think it's important that we don't forget what we've learned in
this way so quickly.
Presenter: Mr. Baumann, Sarina's media club is a good example of modern teaching, in which
the students should not just listen and pay attention, but actually learn for life,
because even in your studies or at work, you have to work with others
26 and develop social skills. Nevertheless, group work in the classroom in Germany still a
rarity.
P. Baumann: True, but that doesn't mean that the lessons are worse or that the students are
worse because of it. learn less. In addition, I don't have to divide the students into
groups if I want to
27 Want to check vocabulary or write a dictation. However, a good teacher knows
also that each student has his or her own personal learning style: one prefers to learn
alone, one
others can work better in a group. The teacher's job is to support the students in this
. That's why you shouldn't always do the same lessons.
Presenter: Sarina, how do you learn better, in group work or with the teacher at the front of the
blackboard?
Sarina: So, it varies. Sometimes I can concentrate best when I have the teacher in front of
me and can ask them questions. When they answer me, I know that the
answer is certainly correct. When it comes to projects, I also like to discuss in a

group because I want to hear the opinion of the others
28 and get new ideas. But in group work there is often a lot of restlessness and it
can happen that you don't pay attention in class.
Presenter: Let's ask another question: In the past, young people had to look up the
encyclopedia if they wanted to find out more, but today practically every

Praxis
student owns a mobile phone. The young people use it to take pictures, apps

than their parents?
P. Baumann: Clearly, young people today have many more sources of information at their disposal
than theirs 29
parents, but often they do not know how to use this information in the classroom.
Sarina: So, if we don't know something, then we can turn on our mobile phone and click
on Google but I don't know if that's better, because often you don't know what's right
or wrong is. You can't believe everything you read on the Internet.
Presenter: Teaching is becoming more and more modern, the students are becoming more and
more intelligent, yet still wrote tests and gave school grades. So my last question to
you, Sarina: Do intelligent students automatically get better grades?
Sarina: I think good grades don't have much to do with the intelligence of the students. I think it's
important 30
that you have the desire to learn. I, for one, have better grades in the subjects that I
enjoy more .
Presenter: Thank you both for the interesting and entertaining conversation.

Test 2, Part 2
You will take a guided tour of the European Bread Museum and hear the information at the beginning of the
tour.

Dear students, dear teachers, good afternoon and welcome to this Friday morning at the European Bread
Museum in Ebergötzen. My name is Rita Busch, I am a museum guide and will take you on a tour of our
museum in the next hour. I hope you all have warm clothes on, because our leadership does not find
11 only in the museum rooms, but also outdoors. And in March it is at this time of day, it is now 9.30 a.m.,
still quite cool outside.
First of all, I would like to say a few words about the European Bread Museum: the museum is only forty
years old, so it is a 'young' museum. But it tells the incredibly long history of agriculture and bread.
Every year
12 about 20,000 visitors come here. At the exhibition, which can be visited from March to November, you
can see a total of 2000 devices, tools and old documents in the rooms of the museum. We will take a
closer look at some of them at the beginning of today's tour.
Afterwards we go outside, because on the square in front of the museum there are our large exhibits to
see, such as agricultural equipment, old horse-drawn carts and stone stoves, where the
13 bread. The highlight of our exhibition are the two windmills in the park, which belongs to the museum.
One mill is even over 200 years old. Nevertheless, you can still grind grain there today!
14 One more thing before we start the tour: You can touch all the machines and tools we see today. Don't
worry, nothing will break. In old pictures of painters, but also in photos, you can see how they work. You can
also use some of the tools yourself! And don't worry: If you don't understand something or want to know
something more precisely, just ask me. I will be happy to give you information.
As I said, our tour lasts about an hour. Of course, you can stay in the museum afterwards or go outside.
There is still a lot to explore, for example an 800-year-old tower or 500-year-old trees.
15 And if you enjoyed the visit, just come back with your parents, for example on a Monday or
Thursday! On these days there are our baking campaigns. There you have the opportunity to bake
your own bread. You can then take it home with you. So, now the tour can begin. Please follow me
all!

Test 2, Part 3
At the bus stop, you can hear a student, Lilian and Benno, talking.

Benno: Hi, Lilian. Finally, school is over. Hopefully the bus will come soon. I'm so hungry.
16 My father wants to bake pizza for lunch today, would you like to eat with us? Your
parents don 't come home from work until the afternoon.
Lilian: Thanks for the invitation, Benno, your father also makes really super fine pizzas, but
today I have to go home very quickly, because for once my parents are already
waiting for me. Today is a special day.
Benno: Real? Tell me! Is it your birthday? Are you having a party? May I come too?
17 Lilian: Nonsense, my birthday is only in October, you know that. No, I told you tells me that
my parents and I were at the shelter two weeks ago. I've wanted a dog for so
long...
Benno: Yes, stop, I can't hear it anymore! (laughs) But seriously, you've always wanted
have a small dog. That was already the case in elementary school...
Lilian: Yes, and my parents were always against it. They said then that I was too young to
be to take care of the animal and take responsibility for it. Yet they themselves
are great
18 Animal lover. My mother had two cats when she was little, and my father grew up
on a farm.
Benno: Well, I mean, they're right, because often the children get pets as gifts for their
birthdays or Christmas and after a few months the dog ends up being the Cat or
the small animal then in the animal shelter. But tell me, did you find a dog back
then?
Lilian: Yes, to love one very much. He is only four months old and his name is Rudi. I'd like to

shelter came to our house together with Rudi to see if we fit together at all and if
the apartment is big enough for the dog and so on. This is called a preliminary
visit.
Benno: I can imagine that there was no problem, you have a large garden and a lot of
space in the house.
Lilian: Yes, Rudi ran around in the garden and was not afraid at all. He was doing really well. 21
Benno: Great, and today you can finally take it home with you?
Lilian: Correct! In two hours the time has come! Come by later, then you can get to know him!

Test 2, Part 4
The presenter of the programme "Forum Schule" discusses with school psychologist Nicole Gruber and pupil
Silvio Koch on the topic "Do you learn better without grades?

Presenter: Dear listeners, hello and welcome to our discussion round "Forum Schule",
today with the question "Do you learn better without grades?" We have invited
two guests: Silvio Koch, student of 10b at the Europagymnasium in Klagenfurt,
and Ms. Nicole Gruber, school psychologist.
Again and again, when there are report cards, the question arises as to whether it
really makes sense to give students grades. Silvio, you're doing your high school
diploma this year: Is there too much stress due to the grades?
Silvio: So, I think it depends on what kind of grades you have. If you use ones and twos
you don't have any stress, of course, but look forward to the report card, which is then
like a reward for the effort you have made all this time. But when the grades are
bad, the students often have double stress: on the one hand because of the bad
grades, and then also because they are afraid that there will be quarrels with
their parents at home...
Presenter: This is indeed a problem that many students face: How do I say it 23
Parents that I have a five in my report card? Then they are certainly angry or sad. Ms.
Gruber, what can parents do in such a situation?
N. Gruber: Parents are often much more worried about bad grades than the students
themselves. But it is usually not bad if a student slips from a two to a four. There
are phases of life when other things are simply more important, that's part of
the human process
Development. You should understand that there can't be only ones and twos... 24
Silvio: Yes, and I think that it doesn't help if you put even more pressure on the children, by
cutting their pocket money or taking away their smartphones, for example, this
the grade was not better. Instead, parents should motivate their children and give them 25
help to improve the grade.
Presenter: Basically, it has been known for a long time that school grades say nothing
about how intelligent or how talented a student is. Why do students'
performance have to be graded at all? Are there no alternatives to the report
card grades?
N. Gruber: Basically, I think grades are important, because they usually provide information about
whether 26
you have understood what you learn in one or the other subject well or not so
well. If you get an A or A in a subject, it usually means that you have understood
the material well. A three or four already gives a sign that you have to learn more
or perhaps differently in the subject.
Presenter: This is certainly a sign, but the problem is that pupils with poor 27
Grades often don't know what they're doing wrong when studying and what they can
11

do to get better grades. And not all parents are able to pay for tutoring for their
offspring. Silvio?
Silvio: Well, I had the problem in French, I just couldn't remember any vocabulary

12
Arena B1 Transcriptions
and therefore often got a bad grade in tests. My parents always believed
I wouldn't learn enough, but I realized that I just didn't know what to do to learn
vocabulary more easily. My French teacher gave me a few tips, for example to
practice with vocabulary cards, games and online tasks . That really helped me
and my tests got better too.
Presenter: But regardless of whether you have a good or a less good grade in your report
card: It will be that a number cannot say anything about how intelligent a pupil or a
pupil is or how well young people are prepared for life in society
29 are. But are there alternatives to the grades and if so, which ones?
N. Gruber: I can give you an example: At some schools, there have long been no simple
grade certificates, but so-called text certificates. There is a detailed description of
how the student develops during the school year, where there are still
weaknesses, but also where the personal strengths lie. For example, it says whether
someone is creative or in class. No note can provide information about this. Of
course, I don't want to say that grades aren't important – quite the opposite, but
they're not everything!
Silvio: And anyway, there are not only bad grades in the report cards. I mean, if you
gets a good grade, it is also a motivation to learn even more. But I find it also
important that the parents stay cool when the grade is not so good. There are
good
30 Tips and moral support much better than stress and criticism. So, that definitely helps
me. I can then learn much more concentrated. And finally, it's also possible with the
notes again uphill.
Presenter: That was a nice final word! Thank you very much, Silvio, thank you very
much, Ms. Gruber, for the interesting conversation.

You will take part in a tour of Zurich Airport for children and young people and listen to the information at
the beginning of the tour.

Hoi, dear people, and welcome to our guided tour of Zurich Airport. My name is Hans Keller and I will

First, some information about our little tour: Well, we are now in Arrival 2, just to the left of the entrance
hall. First we take the escalator to the first floor and go out onto the observation terrace. From there you
have a great view of the planes taking off and landing, which are only about a hundred
up to two hundred meters away. But the observation deck offers much more than just a good view: for example,

a mini-airport with a control tower, an aircraft cockpit and a ten-metre-long aircraft model. And for the
children there is an adventure playground!
Very important: In order for us to be able to visit the observation terrace and the other stations, you have to go

There you will be checked as well as your bags and backpacks. So if you have a wallet with change in
your pocket, a mobile phone or keys, put them on a tray next to your bags or backpacks. After the security
check, you will of course get your things back.
After our visit to the terrace, we go back to the building and visit the different stations, from check-in - this
is the place where you check in your luggage - to boarding, which is where travelers board the plane.
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to accompany them to the plane, but you can watch them board. To 14
Finally, we take the Skymetro, which is the subway of Zurich Airport, back to our meeting point, Arrival 2.
From there you can easily get to Zurich by all means of transport.

And a tip for all those who have their bike - their bicycle - with them: Zurich Airport can easily be

time you are in nature.
But now it starts. Come with me!

Christoph: Well, I didn't really know what to do in this weather on Sunday, but too
17 I didn't want to stay at home. Then I remembered that there is an interesting
exhibition in the Museum of Technology. So I just decided to go there. Such a visit
to the museum is ideal when the weather doesn't play along.
Mareike: What? You and the museum? I don't think so. You find history totally boring. In any
case, you don't always pay attention in class...
Christoph: But there we also have Mr. Stein, who simply doesn't give interesting lessons. There

Fischer, with whom history was really fun. And besides , you don't even know
which exhibition I looked at.
Mareike: You're right, though. Which one was it?
Christoph: That was the exhibition on the history and development of film. There you
could go to the example, who invented the film, what was before the cinema, how
the sound came to the film and so on.
Mareike: Hm, interesting. Could you also see old films there?
19 Christoph: Yes, you could, but they weren't movies or anything. The first films were only a few
minutes long and didn't tell a story or anything like that – that came later – but back
then, these little films were something very special.
Mareike: You made me curious! Tell me more!
Christoph: Well, of course there were also old film cameras and other technical devices that you
could use in a

film camera !
Mareike: You must have taken part in that, you love to get active, with cameras and cameras

21 Christoph: That's right, there was the student competition for the best nature photos.
Mareike: And you won the first prize...
Christoph: No, that was Adelina from 8c, I was second. Adelina won a camera and I a book
about photography.
Mareike: Anyway, the photos were really great. But now I understand why you don't like
history in the museum. more fun than at school. (laughs)

Test 3, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Jugend heute" discusses the topic of "Young people and branded products"
with the educator Thomas Schmidt and the student Simone Bauer.

Presenter: Dear listeners, hello and welcome to our programme "Jugend heute". The topic of
this evening: "Young people and branded products". To this end, I welcome Mr.
Thomas Schmidt to the studio, he is a teacher and father of a 16-year-old son and
a 13-year-old daughter. My second guest is Simone Bauer, she is 15 years old and
a high school student.
Mr. Schmidt, trendy jeans, the latest smartphone - branded products are often
particularly important for young people, at school but also in their free time.
Three quarters of young people, for example, say that they find branded clothes
"in". Sneakers or a mobile phone are only cool if they come from a certain brand. This
often goes so far that classmates are excluded from the community if they don't
wear the right clothes. Why do young people find branded clothing so great?
23 T. Schmidt: Well, adolescents are at an age where they depend on the opinion of their peers
are. If a 'cool' classmate wears a certain brand, then the other students want to

to be accepted. They don't want to be seen as outsiders.
Presenter: For this reason, more and more parents are forced to pay their children expensive 24
To buy branded goods, even though they basically can't afford it. They don 't want
their children to be bullied just because their clothes don't have a brand logo on
them.
T. Schmidt: Yes, that's bad. I myself am the father of two teenagers, so it comes to me and mine
It is sometimes difficult for women to explain to the children that branded
clothing is only about the outside
emphasized in a human being. If most classmates wear a certain brand, 25
which is currently in vogue, the children usually listen less to the arguments of the
parents and simply want to adapt to the group. That's basically quite normal at that
age, but the family is not allowed to incur debts so that the offspring are smartly
dressed.
Presenter: Simone, how is it with you: Do you attach importance to owning branded products?
Simone: Not necessarily. When it comes to shoes, I would rather buy a branded product,
because I have made the experience that such shoes do not break as quickly as
an unknown product, but they must not cost more than 100 euros. I pay for all my
Things from my pocket money, because I don't want to burden my parents. In general, it is
26
It is important to me that the design and quality of the products I buy are good.
These can be branded clothes, but also no-name garments that I like. It doesn't bother
me at all if they don't belong to a well-known brand. In any case, I find myself
quite okay the way I look, and my classmates accept me as I am.
T. Schmidt: The personality of the young people is indeed decisive when it comes to whether
they to feel accepted or not by their peers. Many young people say that their
Self-confidence increases when they wear branded clothes that their classmates or students
27
members of the clique see her with different eyes. They are admired and that makes
them happy.
Simone: Yes, they have the feeling that they are automatically among the winners if they wear
or hold a product from a well-known company in their hands. But it is much more
important 28
that you have your own taste and express it in your clothes, for example. You don't
always need branded clothing for this. For example, I like to go to second-hand
shops that sell clothes from the 50s, from the time of rock 'n' roll. I then combine
them with modern things and create my own look.
Presenter: Let's ask another question: We parents often complain about how superficial the young
people are
and that they are only concerned with the brands and the exterior. But that's what we
do. 29
grew too: the expensive car, the exclusive handbag, the super-expensive laptop or
even the apartment in a chic area. Are we simply setting a bad example for
young people?
T. Schmidt: Children first learn behavior from their parents. That's why we adults should first
critically examine our own attitudes, which doesn't necessarily have to be the
Being clothes: Maybe you feel like a loser because you don't have such a great job as
the neighbor. Children see that too...
Presenter: Finally, a question for both: Are school uniforms perhaps the solution?
T. Schmidt: I think that the problem will then simply be transferred from school to leisure time. On the
30
In the playground you wear the school uniform and in your free time then the
branded clothing. So the problem remains.
Simone: Well, I wouldn't mind wearing a school uniform, I also think that many young people
would have fewer problems with their classmates. But most importantly, I find I
understand that your own style is not a question of brands.
Presenter: Simone, Mr. Schmidt, thank you very much for the interesting conversation.

Test 4, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Pro and Contra" discusses with teacher Erika Westermann and student
Leon Fischer on the topic of "School only from the age of 9 - does that make sense?".

Presenter: Hello and welcome to today's discussion on the topic of "School only from 9
– does that make sense?". To this end, I welcome Ms. Erika Westermann, a teacher
at the Freies Gymnasium in Bern, to the studio. My second guest is Leon Fischer, he
is the head boy of this grammar school. In Switzerland, classes start at half past
seven in most schools in the morning.
This seems to be much too early for most students, especially young people. They
therefore demand that school does not start until nine o'clock. Leon, I would like to
ask a bit provocatively: Why don't the students just go to bed earlier?
Leon: Many people believe that young people are tired in the morning because they
party through the night or sit at the computer until late at night. But the real
reason is different: young people do not have the same biorhythm as adults or
children, most of them cannot fall asleep before twelve o'clock in the evening, so
they are tired and unfocused at school in the morning. In addition, many of us
have a long way to school. I, for example, have to get up at a quarter to six,
because I live in the village and have to take the bus to school for about an hour.
Westermann: Of course, you're not in a good mood then. If I have a lesson in the morning in
the first lesson most pupils are listless and tired, especially in winter, because it is a
matter of
23 time is still dark. Out of twenty pupils, there are perhaps three or four who
are already well rested and concentrated. But this is usually not because they go to
bed earlier: These students are early risers by nature and are already fully
concentrated and in a good mood early in the morning.
Presenter: And that certainly has an effect on school performance. Because a pupil who is in the
class will most likely do better on the tests, right? At least
24 research has shown that the majority of students who are fit in the morning are also fit in
the
Abitur are half a grade better than their classmates, who find it difficult to get out of
bed in the morning.
Westermann: That's why we try at school, for example, not to do the class tests in the first
school lesson, but only in the third, i.e. between 10 and 10.30 a.m. This is
25 a time in which all students can work with about equal concentration. Another suggestion
is to
that all students start the school day with an hour of fitness or swimming. This is
already being practiced at some schools and the teachers there have noticed that the
students are more attentive afterwards.
Presenter: That sounds very positive, because sport wakes you up and is certainly more
interesting for many students than history, but I wonder if half of the second lesson
is not lost,
for example, when the students change after sports. Leon, at your school it was
26 topic of 'start of school at 9' was debated, and finally the majority of the students were in
favor of
that the lessons start at the usual time, i.e. at 7.50 a.m. What were the reasons?
Leon: For most people, the school day simply lasts too long. With clubs and other
activities the normal school day lasts until three o'clock in the afternoon. So if
we come to school an hour later, the lessons don't end until four. And some
students – like me
27 – is then not home until around five or half past five. That was simply too late for the
majority. How
should you still make it to football or hockey? The clubs have fixed T
28 raining times, you can no longer take part in training because you are too late.
Presenter: I think the clubs would adapt to the new situation and postpone training by an
hour. But that doesn't seem to be the only problem.
Westermann: Indeed, if you consider that the students also have tasks to do for the next day
of class: practicing vocabulary, reading a book, doing math exercises. I think that

it will be scarce with time, because, as I said, you also want to give up your hobbies
or meet friends.
Presenter: Leon, you're older and go to school alone. But you have a younger brother,
29 who still goes to primary school. For most parents, it is a problem when school

case?

Leon: Well, luckily we don't have the problem, because my mother is self-employed and has her

But I think she prefers to spend the afternoon with my brother, and that could be
she would be less so if he came home an hour later. Well, there is also no time for 30

A little through the history of the world-famous Porsche cars. I am happy to be able to do so again
11 to be able to welcome so many schoolgirls shows that technology is not only of interest to the boys. But I
am surprised that so many of you take part in our morning tour, which is usually not the case during
the school holidays, then most young people prefer to sleep a little longer.
A fascinating and varied tour through 100 years of automotive history awaits you, during which
12 you can marvel at more than 80 vehicles and many other objects, such as the famous Porsche engines.
We visit the Porsche 911, the best-selling sports car in the world, as well as the Porsche racing cars, but
also automobiles that are not immediately associated with the name Porsche. For example, you can
also see tractors for agriculture in the exhibition. Today, they are almost only seen in museums,
because Porsche has not produced them for many years.
But just as spectacular and fascinating as the cars – as you noticed when you arrived – is the museum
itself. The unusual thing is, of course, its modern external form. But there are also many internal
13 Peculiarities. On the ground floor, for example, you can watch the car mechanics at work in the museum
workshop through a glass wall . The museum has a total of four floors, all of which are easily accessible for
people with disabilities .
By the way: If you miss a certain Porsche model on our tour today, then it was easy to understand.
14 reason. The Porsche Museum is a "living" automobile museum, which means that it travels several
times a year and presents its cars at special exhibitions all over the world. You can find out online
where they take place every time. As a result, we exchange some models here in the exhibition from time to
time. So I ask for your understanding if you don't find your favorite car during today's visit.
Finally, an important note: Of course, you can look at the cars from all sides today and take as many photos as
possible.
15 as you like. You can even get into some cars! You can also download the Porsche app to your
smartphone for free. If you then point to a car model, you immediately get all the interesting information
about this model. Well, curious yet? Then let's go.

At the bus stop, you can hear two students, Katja and Maximilian, talking.

Katja: Hey Maximilian, what are you doing here? That's not your bus line at all. Are you
going to the city?
16 Maximilian: No, I'm going to a friend of mine, Jörg, Jörg Schmidt from 10b. He injured his knee
yesterday while playing football and couldn't come to school today. I bring him his
homework.
Katja: Nice of you!
17 Maximilian: Of course, I could send it to him, we didn't have anything special today - German
and maths, Jörg can do that on his own - but I think it must be pretty boring to lying
alone in bed all day. That's why I thought I'd just visit him. Denis from our class
is also coming.
Katja: Aha, where is he?
Maximilian: Denis always comes to school by bike, so he doesn't have to wait for the bus
18 Like me. He left right after school, so he's probably with Jörg earlier than me. This
bus is always late at noon...
Katja: Stupid, I know. But tell me, how did the accident happen?
19 Maximilian: Oh, that was a stupid thing. Yesterday morning it rained so hard, and when we had
training in the morning, the sun was shining again, but the grass was still wet and
slippery. And suddenly Jörg fell down. At first, we all thought it was fun, when
he said that he couldn't get up anymore, but then we saw that it really wasn't
possible and that he was in pain.
Katja: And then you called the ambulance?
Maximilian: Yes, luckily he came very quickly and Jörg was taken to the hospital. There he was
examined, but luckily the injury was not so bad and he was able to work for two
hours. later home.

The presenter of the radio programme "School of the Future" discusses with pupil Sophie Meier and teacher
Moritz Berger on the topic of "Should mobile phones finally be allowed in the classroom?".

Presenter: Hello, dear listeners, and welcome to our programme "School of the Future", today
with the topic "Should mobile phones finally be allowed in class?" Our guests
today are Mr. Moritz Berger, he teaches chemistry and biology at the Lily-Braun-
Gymnasium in Berlin, and Sophie Meier, she is in the tenth grade of this school.
Smartphones in the classroom - there is hardly any other topic that is so passionately
discussed among teachers, students and parents. In France, mobile phones have
been banned in schools since September 2018, in Germany this has so far only been
the case in Bavaria. In all other federal states, schools decide whether to allow
smartphones in class. Sophie, how is it at your school?
Sophie: That depends entirely on the teacher. Most of them are very strict about this and want
us to
Do not take mobile phones and smartphones out of your pocket. Smartphones can also
23
be very practical in class, for example in French or English lessons: You could look
up vocabulary very quickly and not have to interrupt the teacher every time he
explains something. And in maths, you could use an app to simply enter and
calculate complicated exercises via smartphone. This is faster than with a
calculator.
Presenter: You just mentioned the vocabulary. There are normal dictionaries where you can
can look up the unknown words. In the past, there was no Internet or cell phones.
Sophie: Sure, but the problem is: We already have so much to carry, so I don't think it's
right to burden our school bags with dictionaries for foreign languages or even for
German.
Presenter: I understand, but maybe the problem lies elsewhere, namely that students also click on
other apps during class: You want to look up a word in the digital dictionary, but then
you see a new message on WhatsApp or a social network that you want to answer
immediately and you don't pay attention in class. 24
How could you check that the students are not distracted in class, Mr. Berger?
M. Berger: I don't think that needs to be controlled at all. Nice, in the first time it could
happen that the students are distracted by other messages, but I think that they
quickly get used to the new situation and are much more conscious of using
their mobile phones.
when it lies on the table like a schoolbook in class and is used. The 25
Pupils should also learn to use mobile phones sensibly, like a tool, especially since the
devices will also play a major role in the later life of most people.
Sophie: The cell phones don't have to ring. You can turn them off or turn them down
when they are not in use, with the screen down. Then no one can look,
whether he has just received a text message. And in general, each student has to 26
decide that it is only advantageous to pay attention in class. Otherwise, at the end
of the lesson, you won't have understood the material and have to read
everything again at home.
Presenter: That sounds very positive. But unfortunately, not all students are so responsible
when it comes to the use of smartphones in schools. Again and again, it happens

27 Many say that cyberbullying can only really be stopped if mobile phones are
banned in schools.
M. Berger: In my opinion, a ban on mobile phones does not solve this problem, because
school is not the only place where children and young people meet and where
bullying can occur. After school, for example, it is the sports field. Students
must
28 above all, learn the correct use of smartphones. The schools, but also the
parents at home, are responsible for this. It is important to talk to the children
and young people about possible dangers and to establish rules for the correct
use of the smartphone.
29 Presenter: And school is the best place for that. Unfortunately, however, very few schools in
Germany have modern technical equipment. The computers are usually several
years old, just like the tablets. Also, on average, there are only about thirty
digital devices for five hundred students. That is far too little!
Sophie: Exactly! In contrast, almost 90 percent of students own a smartphone. And in the vast
majority of cases, the devices are equipped with Internet and a flat rate. So it's in
smartphones a huge opportunity for those schools that have little money for
digital devices. Smartphones
30 are a part of our lives, so I just think that a modern school has to keep up with the
times.

listeners, What is your opinion on this topic? Call us or write to us at...

You will take part in a guided tour for young people through the Vienna Prater and hear the information
about the start of the tour.

Hello, dear people, and welcome to our guided tour of the Vienna Prater. I'm Marita and I'm going to
accompany you through the largest amusement park in Europe for the next two hours. Together we will
visit the highlights of the Prater that are particularly popular with young people. These include a roller
coaster, a ghost train and a super-fast carousel, but also a 60-meter-high tower, the so-called
"Space-Shot" in the center of the Prater. But at the beginning, of course, we make the trip on the world-famous
Viennese 11
Big wheel!
It is not for nothing that the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel is one of the most popular sights in Vienna. It is 65 meters
high and 12
has been in the Prater for over 120 years! From there you have a beautiful view over Vienna and the
entire amusement park, which is one of the most modern in the world. Here you will find over 250
attractions, so you can spend the whole day in the Prater without getting bored.
By the way: During our tour, you can experience the attractions I introduce to you for free and do
not have to pay admission. And if you have the "City Card" of the city of Vienna, you can also visit and
use the other sights and attractions of the Prater for half price after our tour. The
Discounts also apply to many other attractions in Vienna. You can also use public transport 13
free to use. The "City Card" costs 17 euros and you can download it to your smartphone via an app.
What I would like to say: The amusement park that we are visiting today – we Austrians also say
"Wurstelpra- 14

jogging paths, bike paths, a swimming pool and much more. For all those who like to run, I have
I also have a tip: In the Prater, running groups take place regularly in the afternoon. You can do something for
your fitness and find yourself in the middle of nature!
And if you want to see more of Vienna without spending a lot of money, then I recommend the Inner City 15
city tours, so-called "Walking Tours", which take place daily. On these tours, ordinary residents of Vienna
present their city, which makes each tour a little different. You don't pay anything in advance for these
walking tours.
If the participants enjoyed the tour, everyone decides for themselves how much they would like to tip . So,
let's get started. I will be happy to answer all your questions along the way.

just leaving. The people gave us good tips on what to do in the area.
Tamina: Practical! And what were the rooms like?
Mark: All had three or four beds. Our room was a 4 bed room...
Tamina: … And there you were with your friends from class...
20 Mark: That was not possible, Mrs. Bader, our class teacher, gave us the room list, which said
which students share a room. She didn't want us to always have the same people.
Tamina: Hm, and what did you do during the day?
Mark: Most of the time we made trips in the area and hiked a lot. And on
21 One day it was so warm that we went to the lake for a swim. Three people even dared
to go into the water, but after two minutes they came out again because the lake was
still much too cold. (laughs) When are you going on a class trip?
22 Tamina: Our class trip takes place in the first week of June, so there are exactly twenty days
left by then...
Mark: Where are you going?

Tamina: When I come back, I'll tell you how it was. Until later today!

Test 6, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Teens Talk" discusses the topic of "friendship among young people" with the
pupils Yamina Krause and the pupil Niklas Zimmermann.

Presenter: Hello and welcome to "Teens Talk", the show for young people. Today we want to talk
about a topic that basically affects all people, namely friendship and especially
"Friendship among young people". My guests in the studio are the student Yamina
Krause and the student Niklas Zimmermann. Both are in the ninth grade of the
Sankt Martin Gymnasium in Villach.
Yamina and Niklas, how do you imagine a real friendship?
Yamina: So, for me, true friendship is when you can rely on your friends one hundred
percent, when you are there for each other when one of them needs help.
Because most of the time it is the case that the young people have fun with the
others and have a good time . But if you are sad or in a difficult situation, there are
not many who offer their help. I think it says a lot about a person how much help
he or she offers.
Niklas: Sometimes these are people who don't necessarily belong to your close circle of
friends or with whom you grew up. Suddenly, someone is at your side from whom
you can't do this. conditionally expected or assumed. That's how I met my best
friend.
Presenter: So sometimes you only realize how good friendships really are in extreme situations.
23 Boys usually help each other by becoming active and actively supporting their
boyfriend, while girls prefer to talk to their best friend and show
understanding. This is what young people stated in a survey.
Yamina: I think that's because we girls are good listeners and a lot more patience than

boys. I always have an open ear for my friends. You know

. It's very important that you can rely on the other person.
Niklas: I think that it is absolutely necessary to tell the truth to each other, even if it is

loses. If I ever disagree with my boyfriend, then I should tell him openly and openly 25
honestly. And on the other hand, I have to be able to accept when my friends don't
agree with me.
Presenter: With adults, it is often the case that you do not express your opinion openly
because you believe that the boyfriend or girlfriend would misunderstand what
is being said. This is referred to as white
Lie. What is it like among young people? 26
Yamina: Sometimes I'm not completely honest, but only because I don't want to hurt the
other person. My Girlfriend and I, for example, we have very different tastes in
fashion,
and when we go shopping together, I often don't like the things she thinks are great . It
happened that I told her I liked the blouse, even though I didn't like the color. I just
wanted to be polite.
Niklas: Well, I don't think that's right. If you can't tell a friend the truth, then it harms the
friendship, perhaps not at this particular moment, but certainly in the long term.
Presenter: Let's talk about another topic: There are very different young people 27
Friendship types: those who like to be in the clique, or those who just need a good
friend or a best friend. What kind of guys are you?
Niklas: I think I'm a pretty sociable guy. I like to be on the road and hate boredom, so I
feel most comfortable in the clique, I just need the hustle and bustle around me.
But sometimes I also like to listen to music with my best friend at home
or go on a bike ride. I think it depends entirely on the mood in which 28
I am right now.
Yamina: I'm also often out and about with the clique, but for me it's a completely
different kind of friendship. Not as close as with your best friend. With the
friends
from the clique we often go bowling or to the cinema and have fun together. But 29
with your best friend you can also have serious conversations, talk about problems
and so on. I don't think that works in the clique.
Presenter: Finally, one more question: Do you believe that there are lifelong friendships?
Yamina: My mother and her best friend have known each other since childhood. They have
always been very close friends, although the girlfriend later moved to another
city. I have
no more contact with my classmates from elementary school. I don't know, I think 30
it's more of a coincidence that friendships last a lifetime.
Niklas: We are still very young. Ask us again in twenty years. I'm curious! (laughs)
Presenter: Yamina, Niklas, thank you for the interesting conversation.

You will take part in a guided tour of the Allianz Arena in Munich and hear the information at the beginning of

Hello, dear girls, dear boys, my name is Fabian Müller and I am looking forward to welcoming you and your
coach to the most modern football stadium in Europe, the Allianz Arena. For us Munichers, however, the
Allianz Arena is not only a stadium, but also the "home" of the Bayern Munich football club. You play

soccer players, the rooms of the soccer journalists and finally we go through the players' tunnel into the
stadium. Normally you can watch the football players training on a Friday like today, but unfortunately we
won 't have the opportunity to do so today, because the team is on its way to northern Germany,
where they will play Bremen tomorrow.
13 Afterwards, I'll take you to the FC Bayern club museum, because the Allianz Arena is, as I said, the "home"
of the football club. You will not only learn many interesting things about the history and development of FC
Bavaria , but you can also visit all the cups and trophies, but also many other objects. In the club
museum there is also a small cinema where you can watch small films about famous players and past
championships. And if you are thirsty and hungry after so many new impressions, you can visit the

Test 7, Part 3
On the bus, you can hear two teenagers, Juliane and Devin, talking. Devin:

Hi, Juliane.
Juliane: Hello, Devin. How are you?
Devin: Quite good. If we didn't write this stupid English test, I would feel even better.
Juliane: But it's not difficult at all...
Devin: You say. But I'm not a language talent like you. I have to learn an awful lot so that 16
I get a three.
Juliane: That's not bad...
Devin: But you always get A's and B's...
Juliane: But I only get that since I was in England last summer.
Devin: That's right, that's where your aunt lives, isn't it?
Juliane: No, my aunt lives in France, near Paris. I was at a holiday camp in 17
Southampton is in the very south of England. I took a language course there.
Devin: How long were you there?
Juliane: In total, I was in England for three weeks. The first two weeks I was, as I said, in the
holiday camp. After that, my parents picked me up and we went a week after 18
London. They thought it would be a good opportunity to finally get to know the country.
Otherwise, they always travel to the south of Europe.
Devin: Hm, and how was the camp?
Juliane: Well, at the beginning I was a bit unsure, because apart from me there was no one
from Austria: the people came from the Czech Republic, from Belgium, from Greece, I
don't even remember where they all came from. One boy even came from India and
one girl from Kenya. But that was mine
Lucky, because there you had to speak English, otherwise it was impossible to
communicate! 19
But that's how I improved my English.
Devin: I can understand it well. And what did you do - apart from English of course? (laughs)
Juliane: Hey, there was something different going on every day: On the first day, after our
arrival, we had a 20
Barbecue evening. Then we played a getting-to-know-you game: Everyone
introduced themselves and the others asked funny questions that should be
answered. So the evening passed quickly...
Devin: And what else?
Juliane: So, after breakfast we had English, from nine to 12, after that we had two hours 21
free, everyone did what they wanted. And in the afternoon we usually went on
excursions to the city or the surrounding area. And on the penultimate day we went
to London and looked at the sights, you know: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the
London Ferris wheel and so on...
Devin: Clear...
Juliane: London is so huge, one day is really not enough to visit all the sights...
Devin: Well, I would like to go to the wax museum of Madame Tussaud...
Juliane: You, I was there too! But only later, when I was in London with my parents. There were 22
We have a whole week to visit a lot of interesting places.
Devin: Cool! Maybe I'll ask my parents if they'll send me on such a language trip.

Test 7, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Jugendtreff um drei" discusses with the teacher Gregor Harting and the
student Sina Liebig on the topic "Should homework be abolished?".

Presenter: Hello and welcome to a new episode of "Jugendtreff um drei", today with the
topic "Should homework be abolished?". Many find it unnecessary, some
find it helpful: We are talking about homework. Currently, students, teachers and
education experts are once again hotly discussing what benefits they actually
have. I have two guests in the studio: Mr. Gregor Harting, German teacher at the
Gutenberg School in Berlin, and Sina Liebig, head of this school.

Mr. Harting, homework is not only unpopular with the majority of students, it is also
the reason why there are always arguments between parents and their
parents at home.

children. Isn't it possible without homework?
23 G. Harting: I have to say very clearly: No, because with homework you repeat the subject
matter that you may not have understood yet, and on the other hand, you
consolidate your knowledge. Let's take foreign languages: the pupils have to
practice their vocabulary and prepare dialogues, otherwise they will not be able to
improve their knowledge of the language. Or the subject of German, which I teach:
Of course, the students have to also write essays. You can't do that in the school
lesson, there is simply not enough time for that.
24 Sina: But we also lose a lot of time that is actually spent on leisure activities or resting
should be used. I mean, we students already spend several hours at school with
learning, projects or activities, almost every student would prefer games after school
play, do sports or simply do nothing. However, this is rarely possible because you
have to work on various homework assignments beforehand.
25 Presenter: And this lack of free time often leads to students doing the tasks without any
desire to do them, without seriously thinking about whether the solution to the
math or grammar problem is correct, for example. Or that they don't do their
homework at all, but copy it from their neighbor on the school bus or in the
playground the next day. But they don't really learn that way.
G. Harting: Of course, you don't learn anything by learning the solutions from other classmates.
26 writes. It's not just about repeating the material for the next day: the students
learn to complete a task without the teacher or parents standing by and helping.
They also learn to manage their time or decide which tasks they want to do first
and which ones they want to do after. Such qualities are at least as important
later in training and career as the school material learned.
Sina: It is true, of course, that students learn for later life and not for school, but many
students who do not keep up so well in class have no one at home who knows
the material and helps them. Then they often have mistakes in their homework,
but they don't dare to ask the teacher in the next lesson. That doesn't make
sense!
Presenter: And if the parents are able to support their children with their homework, then
27 many of them say they spend half the afternoon doing it. And it is not uncommon
for mothers or fathers to write the essay for their son or daughter or solve the math
problem because they want their child to get a good grade. So it is by no means
the case that all students do their tasks all by themselves.
G. Harting: Unfortunately, this happens, but the parents don't really help their child with it.
Because on the one hand, On the other hand, students bring perfect homework to
school, and on the other hand, they write a bad grade on the next test.
Sina: And even if the students do their homework on their own, there are injustices.
28 I mean, one has a room to himself and is undisturbed, the other has to share the room
with younger siblings who are constantly making noise, and still others don 't have
their own room at all, but do the chores in the kitchen or living room.
G. Harting: For these reasons, there is always discussion about how to do homework differently
29 without abolishing it completely. One suggestion would be to do some exercises in
class. This would also give the students the opportunity to work together, ask
questions and understand the material better than if they had to do the exercises
alone at home, where there is not always help.
Presenter: It is clear that a middle ground must be found. Some schools have already
recognized this and no longer give their students homework. Instead, there are
special school lessons in which exercises from all subjects can be completed.
There, the students can work freely and also get help if necessary.
30 Sina: There are now schools where the teachers coordinate so that the pupils can learn in
all subjects. have a total of no more than four hours of homework per week.
That's only about 45 minutes per day. Before, it was about an hour. This could
also be introduced at our school.
Presenter: Homework should therefore be used sensibly and not be hours of daily effort.
Sina Liebig, Mr. Harting, thank you very much for this interesting conversation.

Paul: We moved, my family and I, and I wanted to invite a few people and celebrate...
17 Selina: Hey, great! When did you move? Is that a long time ago?
Paul: Well, my parents have been looking for a new apartment for quite a long time, I
think for over six months. Either the apartments were too expensive or there
were no good transport connections and the way to school would be too long
for my brother and me.
Selina: Understand...

beginning, my parents thought the rent was a bit too high, but in the end they
agreed on the price with the landlord. Yes, and last week we moved in.

the best thing is that I finally have my own room! Until now, I had to share a room

swimming pool. Do you remember the ice cream parlor where we ate ice cream
after swimming in the summer?
Selina: Sure, the one on the corner, with the big colorful parasols...

Test 8, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Jugend heute" discusses with the work expert Gisela Winterer and the
student Tobias Schmidt on the topic "Should you turn your hobby into a profession?".

Presenter: Hello, dear listeners, welcome to our show "Jugend heute". The topic this
afternoon: "Should you turn your hobby into a profession?" I would like to
welcome in the studio Mrs. Gisela Winterer, she is a career counsellor at the Federal
Employment Agency. My the second guest is Tobias Schmidt, he is a student in the
tenth grade of the comprehensive school.
The question of which profession they would like to pursue in the future is asked every
year by thousands of young people who are about to graduate from school,
because vocational training or studies often have a great influence on later life.
Tobias, you'll be graduating from secondary school in a few months and you've
already answered this question.
Tobias: Yes, I've always wanted to do something with animals, my dream job is animal keeper.
What's coming 23
probably also because I grew up in the countryside. My parents have a farm, so of
course there are a lot of animals and I always enjoyed taking care of them. I also
spend a lot of time with animals in my free time, for example I'm currently doing my
internship in an animal shelter.
Presenter: So you are one of those young people and adults who want to do the things
they like to do most in their free time. That's
actually a great idea, because if you learn or study what you are passionate about, you bring
24
usually also the better performance at work. Ms. Winterer, do young people like T obias
often come to career counseling with such plans?
Winterer: Some young people come to me who are passionate about doing something
they are passionate about. would also like to work later in their professional lives.
Someone who, for example, has a genius at the PC can look for training in the field
of information technology. Anyone who is very is creative and perhaps has
painting, drawing or digital design as a hobby, for whom
take up a profession in the field of media or design. However, I always advise a first 25
Student internship in a company or company, because sometimes it turns out that the
desired profession does not suit you so much because you have wrong ideas about the
work.
Tobias: That's why I work in the animal shelter, because I want animal care from all sides 26
get to know. This also includes cleaning cages, rinsing the feed containers, feeding
the animals and giving them something to drink. This is often physically very
demanding and certainly less pleasant than petting cats or walking dogs. But that's
the only way I can be sure that the profession is really the right one for me.
Presenter: You will certainly gain a valuable experience, Tobias. Let's ask another
question: What opportunities and what dangers are associated with someone
choosing their profession according to their hobby?
Winterer: So, we at the Federal Employment Agency find again and again that
commitment and motivation are of course particularly high when someone
enjoys doing an activity and enjoys it
about it. I see a danger in the fact that the enthusiasm for the hobby and the profession 27
disappears when you deal with the same thing both during working hours and during
your free time . Then some young people simply lose interest, especially if the
hobby is still relatively new.
Presenter: This also includes modern activities such as YouTubers or influencers, which are
Marketing strategists who often work through Instagram. Many people who like to
deal with technology and cameras and like to tell people something, want to
turn the initial hobby into a full-time job and, if possible, earn a lot of money
with it.
Tobias: They also say that as a YouTuber you mainly need talent, that the good 28

who is looking for the dream job. Because it often happens that the wish does
not come true for some reason. Maybe it's the grades, maybe you don't pass an exam.
Then, for example, instead of studying, you can first do an apprenticeship and
then continue your education.
Presenter: Let's move on to the application: Should young people mention their hobbies in their CV?
Winterer: In principle, yes, because the future employer can learn a lot from it. For example,
if someone has been playing football in a club for several years, then you can
conclude that this person can work in a team. Of course, this does not mean that
you get the job because of your hobby, the decisive factor is always the
knowledge and the education.
30 Tobias: Well, I think I also got my internship because I was in the application that I like
animals and spend so much time with them in my free time.
Presenter: Tobias, Ms. Winterer, thank you very much for this interesting conversation.

Sebastian: Sure, why not? I like to go to flea markets, I like the atmosphere there...
Alexa: Great! You, the break is over. Until later today!
Sebastian: Until later!

Test 9, Part 4
The presenter of the radio show "Jugendmagazin" discusses with teacher Michael Weiß and pupil Anna Wagner
on the topic "Should behaviour become a subject at school?".

Presenter: Good afternoon, dear listeners, and welcome to a new episode of the
"Jugendmagazin". Today's topic: "Should behaviour become a subject at school?". To
discuss this question, I have invited two guests: Mr. Michael Weiß, teacher at the
Bäumlihof Gymnasium in Basel, and Anna Wagner, tenth grade student of this
high school.
Mr. Weiß, it is repeatedly criticized that young people today are rude and
undisciplined. According to a survey, three out of four Swiss people believe that
young people no longer know what good behavior is and have no respect for
older people.
White: Yes, the fact that young people do not respect the older generation and do not behave
politely was already criticized by the famous Greek philosopher Socrates more than
two thousand years ago. Adolescents in particular behave differently from adults,
because during puberty they do not want to follow the rules that their parents and
teachers have set up. But from Adolescents in turn become adults, who then
complain about the next generation...
Presenter: It is clear that the young people want to make their own experiences and adapt to
certain
23 But you hear more and more often that even children in the third grade don't
greet the teacher, that they don't say "please" and "thank you", don't apologize,
don't throw the garbage in the trash in class or that they don't treat their
classmates nicely.
Anna: I think good or bad behavior doesn't come by itself. In my opinion
24 adults should ask themselves what the reason is when their daughters and sons do not
behave properly. After all, they educate the children and have an influence on their
development. In the vast majority of cases, it is the case that the children have
their own parents as role models.
White: Basically, parents should be responsible for ensuring that children learn how to behave
well, not only at home but also in society. But unfortunately the
25 Rules for behavior are no longer practiced in most families.
Presenter: This is also due to the fact that families spend far too little time together these days.
Most of the time, both parents work all day, and they often spend their free time
talking about each other. just to rest instead of doing something with their
children.
White: In the past, for example, family gatherings took place much more often where old
and young came together, such as a wedding or the birthday of grandparents.
Since shook hands and the children learned to talk to relatives, that they didn't
know so well.
Presenter: Nowadays, young people often don't know how to greet strangers, who addresses
whom first, that they introduce themselves by name or how to talk a bit. The polite

Anna: At my school, we do preparatory courses for student internships, where we
rehearse conversations with the boss or the head of department. It happens again
and again that a student forgets to greet him or her during a job interview or that

then tell us what we have done wrong and we then try to avoid such mistakes in the
future. This makes us feel more confident in dealing with adults.
Presenter: So is it a good idea to introduce the subject "Behavior" in school?
White: If you want to implement this idea successfully, the best time is to learn how to 28
politeness and good manners. In neighboring Germany, some primary school
teachers carried out a project called "Politeness" and lasted six weeks.
Every week there was a different motto at the school, such as "Offer help" or "Greet
politely". At the end of the project, the students noticed that they were much nicer
to each other, and they didn't argue with their siblings as often at home either.
Anna: Well, I think it's easier to implement such ideas in primary school than in
grammar school. I'm now in the tenth grade, and we have too many subjects and
too few Time. But I think that tolerance and politeness are prerequisites for living
together and
working together at school. So I don't think that we have a 29
additional school subject "behavior".
Presenter: Or you should do without less important school subjects and instead focus on the subject
Introduce "behavior". At least that was the result of the survey.
White: No, the most important thing is and remains the parents. They are not only role models, but
should also 30
explain why rules of etiquette are important. For example, because it shows the
grandparents that the grandchildren like and respect them if they leave their old
jeans in the closet for their 80th birthday.
Presenter: Mr. Weiß, Anna Wagner, thank you both for the interesting conversation.

You will take a guided tour of the Puppet Theatre Museum in Augsburg and hear the information at the
beginning of the tour.

Hello guys, I am happy to welcome you here in the museum of the Augsburger Puppenkiste. My name is Tim,
I'm the museum guide and I'll accompany you through the most successful puppet theatre museum for
the next hour
11 Europe. Since its opening in 2001, the museum has had over a million visitors. Thousands of families
come to Augsburg from all over Germany every month to see the exhibition. But some of the visitors
also come from Austria and Switzerland.
We are very happy about that, especially because people of all ages visit our museum. This shows that puppet
theatre is not
12 is only suitable for small children, but that theatre plays with marionettes have fascinated all people, and
have done so for two thousand years. The interesting thing about it is not only the marionettes, but
also the stories themselves that are told. And there are suitable plays for all ages: simple fairy tales for
children or a play for adults. There are even operas with marionettes.
13 By the way, workshops are regularly held here in the museum, where participants learn how to work
with a puppet . It's not as easy as it might look and you have to rehearse long and intensively until you
become a good puppeteer. Our workshops last two weeks and during this time you learn very specific
play movements that are still very simple but important: for example, standing, walking, running, jumping,
sitting or standing up. Of course, it takes years to master all these movements perfectly.
In today's tour, we will focus on the area with the most popular marionettes from the long history of the
Augsburger Puppenkiste. But this is not our only exhibition: For three months now, the
14 On the first floor of the house, there is a special exhibition where you can discover marionettes in the
shape of dinosaurs and other animals that you know from fairy tales, such as big and small dragons.
This exhibition is not part of our tour, but you can of course visit it afterwards.
One last thing: For all fans of the puppet theatre, there is also a shop in the entrance area, where everyone can
15 visitors can buy their very special souvenir and take it home with them: from radio plays and videos to
posters and T-shirts to the famous marionettes. Of course, you can also order all souvenirs online. In our
online shop there are also regular special offers, where you can get many fan articles at reduced prices .
So, enough with the info, please follow me...!

had their own stands ...
Tim: Tell be!
Carina: Well, I'm in the environmental working group, where we deal with recycling, for
example, but also with ideas on how best not to produce any waste at all...
Tim: It's called upcycling...
Carina: Exactly, you are well informed. (laughs) Well, and that's when we had the idea to make gift
bags and 17
small bags from old newspapers, catalogues and magazines. Our motto was
"From old to new". The visitors liked them so much that we sold them all after just a
few hours.
Tim: Great idea, and what else?
Carina: So, the students from 8b had a booth with books, audio books, videos and 18
Console gaming. All students donated, because all of them have a book at home that
they have already read or a game that they no longer play. There were so many
things there that the students needed four large tables, all the others had one or two
tables for their booth.
Tim: I can imagine. And what was there to eat?
Carina: It's better to ask what wasn't there. (laughs) The students from the nutrition club had great
salads and 19
Bread rolls prepared. And next to each product was written which vitamins and how much
energy are in it. Totally interesting! I had never seen that before. And of course totally
delicious!
Tim: Have you tried any of them?
Carina: Sure, I bought a salad. Afterwards I walked to the stand with the cakes...
Tim: … and you bought a piece of chocolate cake, I know. You always do it this way...
Carina: Yes (laughs). But this time I was too late and the chocolate cake was unfortunately already
20
sold out. That's why I bought a piece of apple pie.
Tim: What else was there at the bazaar?
Carina: The seventh grades had organized a flea market. There you could buy toys that you could21
for others. For each part you handed in, you could choose a different one .
Tim: Also a great idea, you also do that with clothes... 22
Carina: Exactly, mostly with those that you usually don't wear very often, for example
with Winter clothing, ski articles and so on...
Tim: … or even with youth clothes, because we are growing so fast, that would be a
good idea for your next school bazaar, wouldn't it?
Carina: You are right! Good idea, because the next bazaar is before Christmas! So, what do
we do now? Shall we walk a little?
Tim: Sure, let's go!

Test 10, Part 4

The presenter of the radio show "Jugend 21" discusses the topic of "Life in the Countryside" with the pupils
Sibylle Neuer and the pupil Peter Lang.

Presenter: Hello, dear listeners, this is "Jugend 21" again. Today's show is about the topic of
"life in the country" and we also want to talk about it personally Listening to
experiences. Our guests in our studio are therefore Sibylle Neuer, student, and Peter
Lang, student. Sibylle, Peter, welcome!
Life in the city is apparently 'in' – "There's something going on, there's no
boredom," you hear again and again. Since 2008, more people worldwide have been
living in cities than in rural areas, and the same is true in Germany. Sibylle, Peter, you
two don't live in the city. Can you briefly introduce yourselves and tell us where you
live?
Sibyl: I'm Sibylle Neuer, I'm seventeen and go to high school. Well, actually I don't live
directly in the countryside, but in a small town, in Mosbach, which is near
Heidelberg.
Peter: My name is Peter Lang, I'm sixteen and live in Elztal, which is a village near Mosbach.
Presenter: Sibylle, Peter, how do you feel about your living situation?
Sibyl: (laughs) Well, it's not quite so bad to live in Mosbach, because with 25,000 inhabitants 23

it's not a big city, but I'm never bored. Personally, I like small towns like Mosbach,
which are more of an in-between, i.e. not country and not city.
Peter: So, I think it's pretty cool to live in the countryside. Most people believe that the air

58
Arena B1 Transcriptions
smells like cowshed in the countryside and that we have to wait for hours for the bus
if we want to go to the city, but that's not the case everywhere.
Presenter: At the moment you both still go to school and live with your family, but
24 soon you will finish school and start an apprenticeship or study. A big city offers
much more possibilities. Have you already thought about where you want to
spend the next few years?
Sibyl: Well, to be honest, I don't know yet where it could be nicer. Before I start my
studies, I would like to go abroad, maybe to Ireland. I would like to live and work
in the countryside there, because I love nature. And after that, I definitely want
to enjoy student life - in a real big city, preferably Berlin.
Peter: Well, I want to go back to the village after my studies, because there you can also do a
25 Start a business. In the world of the Internet, it is no longer so important to be able to
or reside abroad to do business.
Presenter: Peter, what do you see as the advantages of living in the countryside?
Peter: No question, it's nice and quiet here. If you live in a city inconveniently, you
constantly hear Cars, traffic, noise. Where we live, you may hear the church bells -
and they only
26 very quietly. Besides, I find life in the city too anonymous. Here I know most of the
other young people from the village, because I am in the tennis club and on
Mondays and Wednesdays I do gymnastics in the club.
Sibyl: So, living in the countryside has advantages, but there is not much here that
young people can do. I mean the possibilities of going out in the evening or shopping
for clothes.
27 There are some shops in the city centre for shopping, but the selection is not so
large. And if I want to buy new jeans or tops, I often have to take the bus and
train to a larger city, for example Heidelberg.
Presenter: So life in the countryside is not always perfect for young people...
Peter: Unfortunately, that's true, but I don't want to complain, I want to do something about this
situation myself
28 change. That's why I've been active in the youth council of the city of Mosbach
since last year. Young people are committed to the interests of young people
aged 14 to 20. We have already organized a poetry workshop, for example, and next
we want to create a city festival for young people and organize a hip-hop night.
Presenter: One argument that many people make when it comes to the question of "city or
country?" is that it is based on gives the country much more space than in the
city.
Peter: That's definitely true. In the countryside, almost everyone lives in a single-family
house, so the children can jump on the trampoline in the garden or you can sit on
the terrace without disturbing the neighbours. You can't do something like that in
an apartment building.
Sibyl: I also can't imagine spending my whole life in an apartment building in the
middle of in the big city. A balcony on the fifth floor would simply be too small for
me. In addition
29 I don't want to travel for hours on public transport when I'm walking in the woods .
Presenter: You are not alone in this opinion. If you ask people what rural life is like
30 why people live better in the countryside than in the city, they state that
the people there are connected, that the children have more space to play and
that everyone can relax.
Sibylle, Peter, thank you for the interesting conversation.
