MY LITERACY DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE 2

At the age of sixteen one of my friends Q. Boyce invited our group of friends to his church. G.

Dubissette a very charismatic and prominent member of the community pastored the church at that

time. Our group of friends attended several sessions at the church and, we all found religion and

became baptized members. I eventual became a youth leader as did most of my friends and it was

a strict requirement of the church for all members to read the entire bible each year or twice a year,

if you are a leader (youth leaders included). My experience in reading the entire Bible is one of

the most important moments in my literacy development because it helped me to focus my energy

on learning something new, I learned how to research and develop lessons to teach others and it

also encouraged me to make reading a daily part of my life.

First, reading the entire bible helped me to focus my energy on learning something new. Sixteen

is one of those ages in a precarious phase of a persons’ life when we are fool hardy. Around this

time in our life we think we know enough to not really have to listen to the advice of anyone whose

view point does not confirm with ours. Looking back, I realize that being a newly minted born-

again Christian at that age meant two things. Primarily, I was young, and secondly, I was dumb.

But it was a good thing that the church has a requirement, that I needed to read the entire Bible

twice within a year. The first time I read the Bible from cover to cover it was during a forty-day

period that is dub a Daniel fast. For forty days and nights I abstained from yeast, sugar, salt and

meat, etc. I could only eat enough to survive and never between the hours 6:00am to 6:00pm. I

could consume water to abate my thirst but not to dull the hunger pains. My waking hours which

had to be a minimum of 16 hours per day and were consumed by reading the Bible, praying, and

performing work and the tasks needed to survive including hygiene. As difficult as it may sound,

and it was, this period thought me how to disconnect from an over indulgent and distracting world.

This allowed me to focus on achieving the tasks of getting to know God by reading His word

(Bible) and achieving better communication with Him through prayer that is grounded in an

understanding of His word.

Next, I learn how to research and develop lessons to teach others when reading the Bible. As a

youth leader I thought Sunday school and was also involve in youth fellowship. Both activities

needed me to have a sound knowledge and understanding of the Bible. So, I devoted several hours

of my week to research and developing lessons taken from the Bible to discuss with my students,

fellow church members and anyone else who cared to listen. This research involved tying together

scriptures from various part of the Bible into coherent stories that promotes Christians believes

and values in a way that is easily understandable and relatable to others.

Finally reading the Bible encouraged me to make reading a daily part of my life. Before becoming

baptized and needing to read the Bible every day to meet the twice a year quota of the church I

attended. Reading was virtually absent from my life. I only read if something was of absolute

interest to me and even then, I bored easily. But when I dedicated myself to reading the Bible every

day, I found that my knowledge and by understanding began to develop at an accelerated pace. I

discovered that I could read and get engaged in assorted topics and not get bore as easily as before.

Because my purpose for reading was now not only interest but it was pursuit of knowledge. So, it

is now my practice to read every day simple because I like the to gain knowledge.

In conclusion, my experience in reading the entire Bible is one of the most important moments in

my literacy development because it helped me to focus my energy on learning something new, I

learned how to research and develop lessons to teach others and it also encouraged me to make

reading a daily part of my life.
