Present simple tense

TIME EXPRESSIONS
*In the morning /in the afternoon / in the evening
* In spring / in summer / in autumn /in winter
*At night / at midday / at midnight / at noon / at lunchtime
*On Monday / on Wednesday / on Saturdays / on Sundays
*On Monday afternoon / Sunday mornings / Friday nights
*On weekdays / on weekends
*Every day/ month /year / other day.
*Once a week/ a month/ a year
Twice a week/ a month/ a year
Three / four times a week/ a month/ a year
* At 4 o'clock / 7:30
NOTE: Time expressions are always placed at the beginning
or at the end of a sentence.
• EXAMPLES:

• I drink milk every day.

• I do sports every other day.

• My mom doesn’t cook on weekends.

• They always go to NY in winter


We use the Present tense:
1.-To talk about habits and routines.

I go to the gym every other day.


My father usually drives to work.
My sister always makes her bed.
They take the train to the office every day.
My friends and I hang out every weekend.
2.- For facts.

The Moon goes around the earth.


The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
Wood floats on water.

The president of the USA lives in the

White House.
3.- For things that are always/
generally true.

It rains a lot in September.

The Queen of England lives in Buckingham


Palace.

They speak English at work


FREQUENCY ADVERBS
Remember if you want to express how often you do an
activity, we use adverbs of frequency.
EXAMPLES
I always take the bus to school.

I usually go to the movies .

I sometimes take my little brothers to school

I never cook on weekends.

NOTE: We place frequency adverbs after the verb TO BE

Ruth is rarely angry with her brothers.

I’m always happy.

My dad is never late for work.

AFFIRMATIVE FORM
1.- In general, in the third person we add -S
drive he drives
play she plays
run he runs

2.- For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we
add -ES.

mix he mixes catch she catches
finish it finishes
3.- For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we
remove the Y and add -IES.
cry he cries
fly he flies

BUT
vowel + -Y just add -S
buy He buys
say She says
obey It obeys
4.- For the verb TO HAVE, the singular form is
HAS

In order to ask questions about habits, routines or general stuff in
the present, we use the auxiliaries DO & DOES + the main verb
