IDENTIFICATION OF HOUSEHOLD INSECT

Certain members of the class Insecta are considered as pests of human


beings. Such insects cause nuisance, bite painfully and transmit some of the
diseases.Household insects refer to insects that are commonly found in and
around homes, buildings, and other structures, often adapting to the indoor
environment and potentially becoming pests. These insects may infest food,
damage property, or bite/sting people and pets. Common household insects
include

Mosquitoes
Aedes mosquito
Aedas aegypti (Culicinae: Culicidae: Diptera)

Aedes mosquitoes, also known as floodwater mosquitoes, have a stout body,


narrow wings with a distinctive black and white lyre-shaped marking, a short
proboscis, and a restless, erratic flight pattern, typically breeding in small,
temporary water collections and biting aggressively during the day.

Transmits dengue and yellow fever (Viral diseases)

Larvae are aquatic and are called as wrigglers

Pupae are also aquatic and mobile, and are called tumblers

Culex mosquito
Culex fatigans (Culicinae: Culicidae: Diptera)

Culex mosquitoes have a slender body, narrow wings, short proboscis, and a
horizontal resting position, with females having a prominent blood-fed
abdomen and males having a distinctive plumage of hairs on their antennae.

Transmits filarial nematode (Wuchereria bancrofti) which causes filariasis

Anopheles mosquito.
Anopheles sp (Anophelina: Culicidae: Diptera)

Anopheles mosquitoes, the primary vectors of malaria, have distinctive


characteristics, including a slender body, narrow wings, long proboscis, and a
unique stance with their abdomen raised at an angle, typically resting with
their body in a horizontal or inclined position.

Transmits protozoa (Plasmodium sp) which causes malaria

HOUSEFLY
Musca domestica (Muscidae: Diptera)

Maggot, free living and adult transmits diseases like typhoid , cholera,
diarrhoea,Dysentery , poliomylitis and intestinal worms

EYEFLY
Siphunculina funicola (Chloropidae: Diptera)

Adults settle on the face near the corners of the eyes, feed on lachrymation

And cause annoyance and irritation and transmits conjunctivity

SANDFLY
Phlebotomus spp.( Psychodidae: Diptera)

Small flies with the body and wings thickly covered with hairs, found in Moist
places

Females are blood suckers and transmit Kala- azar, a disease caused by
Protozoa

They also transmit Paapataci fever, a viral disease

Cockroaches
It has a distinctive appearance, characterized by their flat, oval-shaped
body, six legs, two antennae, and a hard exoskeleton.

It transmit diseases and allergies through their fecal droppings, saliva, body
parts, and contaminated food and water.

Ant
Ants are small to medium-sized insects with a narrow waist, large head,
compound eyes, distinctive mandibles, six legs, and are typically social
creatures living in colonies, with varying body shapes, sizes, and colors
across different species.
