Question 1 (Mapped to ILO 2) [25 points]

A submarine is to be designed to provide a comfortable temperature for the crew of no less than
21°C. The submarine can be idealized by a cylinder 9 m in diameter and 61 m in length. The
combined heat transfer coefficient on the interior is about 14 W/(m2K), while on the outside the
heat transfer coefficient is estimated to vary from about 57 W/(m2K) (not moving) to 847 W/(m2K)
(top speed). Using the thermal conductivity values from the property table, determine the minimum
size in kilowatts of the heating unit required for the following wall constructions if the seawater
temperatures vary from 1.1 to 12.8°C during operation. The walls of the submarine are:
a. 2.XX cm pure aluminum; (5 points)
b. 1.XX cm AISI 316 Stainless Steel with a 2.5 cm thick layer fiberglass (40kg/m3 density)
insulation on the inside (10 points) and;
c. of sandwich construction with a 1.XX cm thickness of stainless steel, a 2.5 cm thick layer
of fiberglass insulation, and a 0.6 cm thickness of aluminum on the inside. (10 points)
Note: XX refers to your seat number. (.01 for seat number 1 and .45 for seat number 45)

Question 2 (Mapped to ILO 1) [25 points]

A nuclear fuel element of thickness 2L is covered with a steel cladding of thickness b. Heat
generated within the nuclear fuel at a rate q̇ is removed by a fluid at T∞, which adjoins one
surface and is characterized by a convection coefficient h. The other surface is well insulated,
and the fuel and steel have thermal conductivities of kƒ and ks, respectively.

a. Obtain an equation for the temperature distribution T(x) in the nuclear fuel.
Express your results in terms of q̇ , kƒ, L, b, ks, h, and T∞. (15 points)
b. Sketch the temperature distribution T(x) for the entire system. (10 points)
Question 3 (Mapped to ILO2) [25 points]
Steady state temperatures at selected nodal points of the symmetrical section of a flow channel
are known to be T2 = 95.47℃, T3 = 117.3℃, T5 = 79.79℃, T6 = 77.29℃, T8 = 87.28℃, and T10
=77.65℃. The wall experiences uniform volumetric heat generation of q̇ =106 W/m3 and has a
thermal conductivity of k=10 W/m-K. The inner and outer surfaces of the channel experience
convection with fluid temperatures of T∞, i = 50℃ and T∞, o = 25℃ and convection coefficients
of hi = 500 W/m2-K and ho = 2XX W/m2-K. XX refers to your seat number. (if seat number 1
then ho = 201)

a. Determine the temperatures at nodes 1,4,7, and 9. (10 points)

b. Calculate the heat rate per unit length (W/m) from the outer surface A to the adjacent
fluid. (5 points)
c. Calculate the heat rate per unit length from the inner fluid to surface B. (5 points)
d. Verify that your results are consistent with an overall energy balance on the channel
section. (5 points)
