Treatment Rated Capacity

65 – 5200 m3/h

Product description

Treatment sequence:
• Ballast water uptake: Filtration & Electrocatalysis (EUT)
• Ballast water discharge: Neutralization

System design limitations / Water quality parameters

Temperature & Salinity

Salinity of the ballast water is not a limiting condition for the BWMS, if the BWMS is fitted with a
brine/sea water injection unit (optional) for ballast conditions with a salinity <0.85 PSU. Without
brine/sea water injection unit, the BWMS has a limitation and can only treat water with a salinity above
0.85 PSU. The electrocatalysis unit (EUT unit) shall be operated within the treatment rated capacity of
the BWMS while a lower flow rate shall be applied if the water has a salinity below 1 PSU.

Temperature of the ballast water is not a limiting condition for the BWMS.

System design limitations / Operational parameters

Holding time
The BWMS has demonstrated performance to the discharge standard in land-based testing with a
minimum holding time between intake and discharge of 2 hours across all salinities.

Holding time is not a practical limitation for the Headway OceanGuard® BWMS, but the treated ballast
water shall be kept in ballast tanks for at least 2 hours before being neutralized and discharged.

Dosing
The BWMS has demonstrated performance to the discharge standard with the target TRO of 2.0 mg/L
during the ballast water uptake.

TRO concentration at discharge shall be ≤0.1 mg/L.

Treatment Rated Capacity (TRC) of the BWMS

The Treatment Rated Capacities (TRC) of the designated OceanGuard® BWMS models are listed below.
The list also specifies the major components of the OceanGuard® BWMS that shall be installed for a
specific OceanGuard® BWMS model. A OceanGuard® BWMS model may be used with a larger filter unit
(of both HMT-F and S-ZF-V/H filters) than specified below.

The BWMS has no flow control function and the flow shall be regulated by the ballast pump when
treating fresh water with salinity <1 PSU.

equivalent bio-efficacy performance.

Control and monitoring equipment

Software version
The OceanGuard® BWMS is type approved with the system control software version 2.1.008.xx (where
xx shall be 06 or higher). Any changes to the software are to be recorded as long as the BWMS is in use
onboard. The records of all changes are to be forwarded to DNV GL for evaluation. Major changes in the
software, which can alter the performance of the system, require approval. Testing of the application
functions of the revised software may be required.

Safety measures
The BWMS is type approved with the following instruments related to safety:
• Flow meter (installed after EUT unit)

Form code: TA 251 Revision: 2016-12 www.dnvgl.com Page 4 of 15

(1) This test failed because the density of 10–50 µm exceeded the discharge standard, and interrupted the test sequence.
(2) These two tests are defined invalid due to TRO sensor malfunction.
(3) Target TRO for these two unsuccessful test cycles were below the final claims of the BWMS – thus invalid.

Table 4 Average densities of live organisms in inlet and treated discharge water during land-based testing of the
Headway OceanGuard® BWMS with S-ZF2-H filter. Live organisms ≥10 and <50 µm were quantified by microscopy
counting after staining with CMFDA/FDA. All counts of pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, Enterococci and Vibrio cholerae) in
treated water were below the ballast water discharge standard.

(1) B-6 is defined unsuccessful due to improper functioning of the filter during ballasting, not reaching target TRC of 300 m 3/h,
in addition installation of a new filter cleaning pump after B-6 which was not considered identical to the pump used during
test B-6.
(2) F-8 was run with a target TRO of 3.0 mg/L, which was higher than the other fresh water tests (therefore defined invalid).

(1) TRO values are average measurements during ballasting; the data was recorded from the display on the BWMS control
panel.
(2) Flowrates before filter are average measurements during ballast operation; the data was recorded by SHOU-BWDL
device.
(3) Flowrates after filter are calculated as processed volume by operation time.
