1.The article criticized the use of growth as the main strategy for the eradication of poverty. Why is that
so?
We know that growth is the increase in the nations production of goods and services that contributes to
the development of the economy. In this article they criticized the use of growth as the main strategy of
eradication of poverty because they believe that sustained economic growth will lead to increased
wealth creation, which will ultimately benefit everyone in society, including the poor. If it benefits the
people then it will contribute for the development of people. However, critics argue that this approach
often prioritizes GDP growth over other consideration based on the article.
2. Based on the article, why do we need to de-develop rich countries? Do you agree?
Economist Peter Edward argues that instead of pushing poorer countries to “catch up” with rich ones,
we should be thinking of ways to get rich countries to “catch down” to more appropriate levels of
development. We should look at societies where people live long and happy lives at relatively low levels
of income and consumption not as basket cases that need to be developed towards western models,
but as exemplars of efficient living.
I somehow agree with the importance of re-development of rich countries but it is necessary to consider
and give attention to the poor countries because they are the one who needs help for their
development. While rich countries have the resources to further their own development, it's often
challenging for poor countries to achieve progress without external support. Unfortunately, we often
see a widening gap where rich countries become richer while poor countries struggle to advance,
mirroring the say that we often think about, that 'the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. If growth is
indeed the key to eradicating poverty, then why is there a suggestion that rich countries need
redevelopment? It is crucial to help poor countries so they can keep pace with development and
innovation, and contribute to the growth of the global economy. It’s better to see if the poor countries
are developing too so that we can create a good growth together and we for them to live a better life.
3. What is the connection of the article to human flourishing and the progress of science and
technology?
It discussed about the growth of human relating to the development of the country and the people
where technological and scientific innovation are part of their development. Because of science and
technological innovation, people become more innovative where it contributes more to the growth of
economy. We can conclude that technology helps for more production of goods and services in the
country and aligned with broader goals of sustainability in the life of people that contributes to human
flourishing by sustaining the needs of the countries for their development.
