Part Test-2
Time Allowed: 2 Hours Maximum Marks: 50

General Instructions:
1. There are 23 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D, and Section E.
3. All the sections are compulsory.
4. Section A contains ten questions, eight MCQ and two Assertion Reasoning based of 1 mark each, Section B
contains four questions of two marks each, Section C contains six questions of three marks each, Section D
contains one case study-based question of four marks each and Section E contains two long answer questions
of five marks each.
5. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in Section B, one
question in Section C, one question in each CBQ in Section D and all two questions in Section E. You have to
attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
6. Use of calculators is not allowed.

of refractive index 1.4, to have a power of –5D?

Show that the least possible distance between an object and its real image in a convex lens is 4f, where f is the
focal length of the lens.
SECTION C
15.
(i) What are the coherent sources?
(ii) Use Huygens principle to explain the refraction of light from one transparent medium to other.
Also derive Snell’s law.
OR
(i) ‘Two independent monochromatic sources of light cannot produce a sustained interference
pattern’. Give reason.
(ii) What is the effect on the interference fringes in Young’s double slit experiment when
(a) the width of the source slit is increased;
(b) the monochromatic source is replaced by a source of white light?
16. An AC voltage Vi = 140 sin(100 πt) V is applied to the primary coil having 200 turns, of an ideal transformer
and it supplies a power of 5 kW. If the secondary coil has 1000 turns, find:
(i) the output voltage,
(ii) the instantaneous voltage across the secondary coil, and
(iii) the current in the secondary coil. (Take √2 = 1.4)

17. Draw a labelled diagram of AC generator. Derive the expression for the instantaneous value of the emf
induced in the coil.
18. Write three points of differences between paramagnetic, diamagnetic and ferromagnetic materials, giving one
example for each.
19. A symmetric bi-convex lens of radius of curvature R and made of glass of refractive index 1.5 is placed on a
layer of liquid placed on top of a plane mirror as shown in the figure. An optical needle with its tip on the
principal axis of the lens in moved along the axis until its real, inverted image coincides with the needle itself.
The distance of the needle from the lens is measured to be x. On removing the liquid layer and repeating the
experiment, the distance is found to be y. Obtain the expression for the refractive index of the liquid in terms
of x and y.

(i) Predict the polarity of the capacitor in the situation described below:

(ii) What is the direction of induced currents in metal rings 1 and 2 when current I in the wire is
increasing steadily?

(iii) A bar magnet is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow between two coils PQ and CD.
Predict the direction of the induced current in each coil.

21. Interference Fringes
In Young’s double slit experiment, the width of the central bright fringe is equal to the distance between the
first dark fringes on the two sides of the central bright fringe. In given figure below a screen is placed normal
to the line joining the two point coherent source S1 and S2. The interference pattern consists of concentric
circles.

22. (i) Obtain an expression for the torque acting on a current carrying loop in a uniform magnetic field B. Draw
the necessary diagram.
(ii) An ammeter of resistance 0.8 W can measure current up to 1.0 A. What must be the value of shunt
resistance to enable the ammeter to measure current up to 5.0 A?
OR
(i) Two long, straight, parallel conductors carry steady currents in opposite directions. Explain the nature of
the force of interaction between them. Obtain an expression for the magnitude of the force between the
two conductors. Hence define one ampere.
(ii) Two long straight parallel wires separated by 20 cm, carry 5 A and 10 A current respectively, in the same
direction. Find the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at a point midway between them.
23. (i) Draw a ray diagram showing the formation of image of a point object by a thin double convex lens having
radii of curvature R1 and R2 and hence derive lens maker’s formula.
(ii) Three lenses of focal lengths +10 cm, −10 cm and +30 cm are arranged coaxially as in the figure given
below. Find the position of the final image formed by the combination.

OR
(i) Draw a ray diagram to show the working of a compound microscope. Obtain the expression for the total
magnification for the final image to be formed at the near point.
(ii) In a compound microscope, an object is placed at a distance of 1.5 cm from the objective of focal length
1.25 cm. If the eyepiece has a focal length of 5 cm and the final image is formed at the near point, find the
magnifying power of the microscope.
