When various members of a class of organic compounds, like alkanes, alkenes and alkyne +
which can be represented by a general formula and have same functional group are arranged 2
in order of increasing molecular weights, they are found to differ from each other by a fixed
group of atoms. They are said to form a homologous series. All members of a particular
homologous series can be represented by the same general formula. For example, alkanes can
