Example 1: A vertical stick 10 cm casts a shadow 8 cm long. At the same time, a tower casts
a shadow 30 m long. Find the height of the tower.
Solution:
A
Let us understand the given statements.
Length of the stick be DE = 10 cm
Length of the shadow of the stick EC = 8 cm Tower

Let the height of the tower AB = h cm. D
Length of the shadow of the tower BC = 30 m 10 cm

Example 2: A boy of height 120 cm is walking away from the base of a lamp post at a
speed of 1.8 m/s. If the lamp post is 4.2 m above the ground.
Find the length of his shadow after 4 seconds.
Solution:
A
Let AB be the lamp post.
Height of AB from the ground = 4.2 m.
Let CD be the position of the boy after walking

Given, height of the boy CD = 120 cm. 4.2 m

BD will be the distance covered in 4 seconds at the speed of 1.8 m/s.

Recall, Distance = Speed x time
Replace Speed = 1.8 m/s BD = 1.8 x 4
Time = 4 sec
BD = 7.2 m
We need to find the length of shadow DE after 4 seconds.
Let us assume DE = x m

Try these

1. A vertical stick 30 m long casts a shadow 15 m long on the ground.

At the same time, a tower casts a shadow 75 m long on the ground.
Find the height of the tower (in meters).

2. A boy of 95 cm is walking away from the base of a lamp post at a speed of 1.5 m/s.
If the lamp post is 3.8 m above the ground, find the length of the shadow after 5 seconds.
