What is 3D Modeling?
• Definition of 3D Modeling: 3D modeling is the process of
creating a three-dimensional representation of an object or
scene using specialized software, allowing for visualization from
multiple angles and perspectives.
Applications
• character design for games,
product design for
engineering, architectural
models, and animations.
This helps students visualize
the end goal.
• 3D modeling is not just artistic but also highly technical. You
need to consider geometry, topology, and efficiency to create
good models.
Why 3D Design?
• Creativity & Expression
• Career Opportunities
• Problem Solving
Tool
• Blender: is a powerful, free, and open-source tool.
• Blender offers a wide range of tools for modeling, sculpting, texturing,
animation, rendering, and even video editing. It's a one-stop solution
for many creative tasks in 3D design and beyond.
• Despite being free, Blender provides professional-grade features,
such as PBR (Physically-Based Rendering), realistic lighting, and
high-quality output. Many industry professionals use it in their
pipelines.
• Blender allows users to extend its functionality through Python
scripting and add-ons, making it highly customizable to fit specific
project needs or workflows.
• Blender works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, providing flexibility to
users across different systems.
Basic 3D Concepts
• Vertices, Edges, and Faces:
• Vertices: Points in 3D space that define the corners of an
object.
• Edges: Lines connecting vertices.
• Faces: The surfaces created by edges.
Basic 3D
Concepts Cont..
• Meshes:
• Explain how most 3D models are
made up of meshes, which are
collections of vertices, edges, and
faces.
Basic 3D
Concepts Cont..
• Topology:
• Talk about the arrangement of
polygons on a model’s
surface. Good topology makes
the model more efficient and
easier to animate.
Basic 3D Concepts Cont..
• Coordinate Systems (X, Y, Z):
• Explain that every object in 3D space exists on an X, Y, and Z
axis (width, height, and depth).

Precision: Moving objects in 3D space
can be difficult without precise control.
Common
Navigation: 3D space can be tricky to
Challenges navigate. Encouraged to practice
rotating, panning, and zooming until it
in 3D feels natural.
Modeling Overcomplicating Shapes: Start with
simple and gradually add detail. It’s
tempting to jump to complex models, but
mastering the basics is crucial.
