SIMPLE MOTION PROBLEM SET

Name: _______________________________ Period: __________ Date: _____________

Students will combine mental powers to answer the questions on this sheet. Each solution will
be presented to your peers and, based on your explanation, they should be able to write down
the solution to each problem! Please use a separate sheet of paper to write down the entire
solution should you run out of room on this capture sheet.

EXAMPLE: A tennis ball with a speed of 26.8 m/s is moving perpendicular to a wall.
After striking the wall, the ball rebounds in the opposite direction with a speed of
15.3564 m/s. If the ball is in contact with the wall for 0.0159 s, what is the average
acceleration of the ball while it is in contact with the wall?
Take “toward the wall” to be the positive direction.

GIVEN FIND FORMULA

1. A car traveling with a velocity of 21 m/s in the x direction is accelerated uniformly in the
x direction at 1.3 m/s2 for 6.6 s. What is its final velocity?

2. A car, initially at rest, travels 20 m in 4 s along a straight line with constant acceleration.
The acceleration of the car is:

3. Joe Go is able to run at constant acceleration for several seconds. If he starts from rest
and after 4 sec is traveling at 8.0 m/s, what was his acceleration?

For Q#4 - 6, use the following:

Gravity gives a constant acceleration of 9.8 m/s2 towards the center of the Earth. For quick (i.e.
Multiple Choice) problems, we tend to use 10 m/s2, but be sure to use 9.8 m/s2 when doing
specific calculations / predictions unless otherwise told.

4. An object (like a freshman) is thrown downward at a speed of 5m/s. It travels 3 seconds

at an acceleration of 10 m/s2 downward. What is its change in position

6. What is the displacement of an object that may or may not graduate in four years that is
thrown upward at 5 m/s, travels for 3 seconds, and has an acceleration of 10 m/s2
downward?
