BUILDING A CAREER PATH

CAREER: a career is an individual’s journey through learning, work and other aspects of life. (Oxford
dictionary)

CAREER PATH: a career path is the steady progress an individual makes in his or her line of work
(Cambridge dictionary). “Your career path can be thought of as a map that leads to your final goal or
destination.”

SUCCESS: is the accomplishment of an aim or objective.

CHOOSING A CAREER

The choice of a career is one of life’s biggest decisions. It is a life-long move that will shape your future.
It will become an integral part of your identity.

Exploring career options is an important step on the road to adulthood. There is no better time to begin
thinking about careers than the early teen years. As teens enter into the university, they will be faced
with choices in which courses they take.

The courses they take in school can affect the careers which they eventually embark on. While there is
no reason for teenagers to lock themselves into one specific career path, having an idea of where they
want to be in the next 5 to 10 years will get you started in the right direction.

Here are few tips to help you figure out what type of career would be a good match for your interest
skills and personality:

 Asking the right questions


 Education and interests
 Research your options
 Being realistic
 Ask for advice
 Exploration
IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER

 What am I good at? (When you are good at something you tell people but when you are great at
something people tell you)
 Does money guarantee happiness?
 One thing that surely guarantees happiness is SUCCESS
 Success starts in the mind if you can’t picture it you can’t put it into realism.

MYERS-BRIGGS Directions:

 For each of the following 20 prompts choose a or b


 Record your answers on the score sheet directly below question
 The score sheet runs horizontally along the row before going down
 Choose the answer that you think most accurately describes you
 Even if you agree with both answers, check one you agree with more
 Answer as you really are, not you want to be
 Make choices for the majority of your life situations
 Having strong interests should not be used to cloud the results
 Think of situations in which you are free to be yourself
 There are no right or wrong answers
 Answer honestly

THE MYERS-BRIGGS PREFERENCE QUESTIONNAIRE (Personality test)

 This is a 20 question questionnaire designed to help see who you are.


 Self-evaluating is not foolproof.
 Even when test-takers answer honestly, there are reasons why the score is different from their
true type.
 Taking this questionnaire is one step to determine your personality type.

GLOSSARY

Expend – to spend or use up a resource such as money, time or energy


Literally – used to emphasize the truth and accuracy of a statement or description

Empathetic – showing an ability to understand and share the feelings of another

Flexible – able to change or be changed easily according to the situation

Reserved – slow to reveal emotion or opinions

Experiential – involving or based on experience and observation

Innovative – introducing or using new ideas or methods

Theoretical – concerned with or involving the theory of a subject or area of study rather than its
practical application

Candid – Truthful and straight forward

Frank – open, honest and direct in speech or writing, especially when dealing with unpalatable matters

Tactful – skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations

Spontaneous – happening or done in a natural, often sudden way, without any plannings or without
being forced

Solitary – alone; without companions, unattended

Conventional – Following the usual or widely accepted way of doing things

Novel – New or unusual in an interesting way

Conciliate – To end a disagreement or someone’s anger by acting in a friendly way, or slightly changing
your opinions

Reticent – Not revealing one’s thoughts or feelings readily

Reflective – relating to or characterized by deep thought; thoughtful

Deliberate – done consciously and intentionally

Philosophical – having or showing calm attitude towards disappointments or difficulties

Latitude – how much freedom you have in making choices
