Chapter 13 - A River’s Tale

1. What is the colour of the river where it begins?

Ans: The river appears colorless/light blue from where it begins,

2. At some places, there are many fish in the river, at others there are only a
few and at some places there are dead fish. What could be the reason for this?
Discuss.

Ans: There would be many fish in the river if the water is clean or not polluted. If
the river is polluted, there will be dead fish or a decreased population of fish. As a
result, we may state that it depends on the river's water quality.

3. What can be seen in the river before it reaches the village?

Ans: Because the water is pure, many fish may be seen before it reaches the village.

4. At which places did the colour of the water in the river change? Why did this
happen? Discuss.

Ans: Near villages, towns, and cities, the colour of the river's water is altered. It
happened because river water is polluted by home and industrial trash, among other
things.

5. Which of the places shown in the picture would you like to live in? Why?

Ans: I'd like to dwell in the area where the river begins. Because the water there is
pure.

6. Would you like to change any of the things that you see in the picture? Why
and how?

Ans: With the support of my friends and the government, I'd like to clean up the
region around the river. The river is polluted by garbage products near it.

7. Have you seen people throwing different things into rivers or water bodies?

Ans: Yes, I've seen individuals dump various items into rivers and other bodies of
water.

8. What could be done to keep rivers clean? Discuss.

Ans: To keep the rivers clean or to maintain the cleanliness of the rivers we can take
the following steps.

1. We should not toss rubbish into rivers, such as plastic bags, glass bottles, and so
on.

2. Industrial trash should not be dumped in rivers or other bodies of water.

3. Household waste, sewage water, and agricultural waste should not be dumped into
rivers or other bodies of water.

9. If you wanted to drink some water, from which part of the river would you
like to drink? Why?

Ans: I'd want to drink water from the river's source because it's clean and pure.

10. In the last part of the picture the river flows into the sea. Have you ever seen
the sea? Where? In a movie, or somewhere else?

Ans: Yes, I've been to the beach. I saw the sea and a beach when I visited Mumbai.
I've also seen the sea in movies.

11. Have you ever been near a river or sea? When?

Ans: Yes I have been near the sea when I travelled to my Aunt's house in Mumbai.
My aunt's apartment was a sea facing apartment.

12. Is the water from the sea drinkable? Why?

Ans: No, seawater is not drinkable due to the high concentration of salts in it.

13. Do you think that there would be changes taking place in a river, pond, or
stream at different times of the year? What kind of changes would these be?
Discuss.

Ans: Yes, at different seasons of the year, variations in a river, pond, or stream might
occur. In the summer, water levels in rivers, ponds, and streams are very low; in the
rainy season, water levels are high; and in the winter, water in rivers, ponds, and
streams freezes in certain places.

14. Will there be the same amount of water in the ponds or rivers during the
rainy season and in the summer?

Ans: No, the volume of water in the ponds/rivers during the rainy season and the
summer will not be the same. During the rainy season, the water level in ponds and
rivers will be higher than during the summer.

15. Is there a pond, river or lake near your town or city? Find out –

a. Are there any changes in the water during summers, the rainy season and in
winters?

b. What are the different kinds of water animals found there?

c. What kind of trees and plants grow around it?

d. What are the kinds of birds that come there?

e. Have you ever seen or read about floods? Where?

g. Have you seen dirty water in a river or pond? Where?

h. How would you know if the water is dirty? If the water looks clean, can you
be sure that it is alright to drink that water? Discuss.

Ans: Yes, the river Mahanadi runs through my town.

a. Yes, the water changes during the summer, the rainy season, and the winter.

b. The river is home to a variety of fish species.

c. It is surrounded by teak and bamboo trees.

d. Birds such as the white-brown bulbul, crow, small ringed plover, Indian robin,
and others can be seen near the Narmada river.

e. I have witnessed floods in Jabalpur.

f. During a flood, dry land is frequently flooded in water, and water overflows into
rivers, ponds, and other bodies of water. Houses and roads are also inundated by the
floodwaters.

g. Yes, I've seen filthy water in a pond near my grandmother's Raipur home.

h. Water that is hazy, muddy, or has a foul odour indicates that it is unclean. Even if
water appears to be clean, it may contain bacteria that are invisible to the naked eye.
So, just because water appears clean doesn't mean it's safe to drink.
