Case Study:

Title: "The Impact of Social Media on Teenagers' Language Skills"

Background: In recent years, social media platforms have become integral to the lives
of teenagers worldwide. This study aims to investigate how extensive use of social
media affects the language skills of adolescents aged 13-18. The study will focus on
both written and spoken language abilities, including grammar, vocabulary, spelling,
and coherence.

Research Questions:

1. How does frequent use of social media influence teenagers' writing skills?
2. Are there noticeable differences in vocabulary usage between heavy social
media users and non-users?
3. Does prolonged exposure to informal online communication affect teenagers'
ability to communicate formally?

Methodology:

 Participants: 100 teenagers aged 13-18 from diverse socioeconomic

backgrounds.
 Procedure: Participants will be divided into two groups based on their
frequency of social media use (high users vs. low users). They will be assessed
through writing samples (essays on given topics) and speaking tasks (describing
a picture or discussing a given topic).
 Data Collection: Writing samples will be analyzed for grammar, spelling errors,
vocabulary richness, and coherence. Speaking tasks will be evaluated for
fluency, coherence, and vocabulary.
 Analysis: Statistical analysis (such as t-tests or ANOVA) will be used to
compare the language skills of high social media users versus low users.

Expected Outcomes: It is anticipated that heavy social media users may demonstrate a
higher incidence of informal language usage and abbreviations in their writing.
Conversely, their spoken language might exhibit more casual speech patterns compared
to non-users. Differences in vocabulary range and complexity are also expected between
the two groups.

Implications: Understanding how social media impacts language skills can inform
educators and parents about potential interventions to enhance formal communication
abilities among teenagers. This study may also shed light on the broader implications of
digital media use on language development.
