The Effect of Different Types of Shampoo on Hair
Growth in Men Over a Set Period Time

Related Literature Review:

The effectiveness of shampoos in promoting hair growth has been widely

studied, with varying results depending on the ingredients and formulations
used. This literature review will explore relevant research on the ingredients
commonly found in hair growth shampoos, the mechanisms through which
they are believed to work, and their impact on hair growth, particularly in men.

Many shampoos also contain synthetic ingredients such as sodium lauryl

sulfate (SLS), which is often used to create lather and cleanse the scalp.
While these ingredients are effective in cleaning, some studies suggest that
frequent use of harsh chemicals can irritate the scalp and damage hair
follicles, potentially leading to hair thinning or breakage. Agarwal (2016)
warned that while SLS is generally considered safe, its long-term use might
weaken hair and hinder healthy growth. This highlights the importance of
using shampoos with gentler, more nourishing ingredients for optimal hair
health.

Despite many products on the market claiming to promote hair growth,

Haneke (2018) found that the evidence supporting the efficacy of many over-
the-counter hair growth shampoos is limited. Although some ingredients have
shown promise in controlled studies, consumer products often fail to deliver
significant results unless used in conjunction with other treatments like
minoxidil or prescription medications. This underscores the need for further
clinical research to validate the claims made by shampoo brands, particularly
regarding long-term hair growth benefits.

Background of the Study:

Hair growth and maintenance are critical concerns for many individuals,
especially men, as hair health often plays a significant role in self-esteem and
personal grooming. Male hair growth is influenced by various factors,
including genetics, age, scalp health, and the type of hair care products used.
Among these, shampoo is a widely used product that claims to promote hair
growth, prevent hair loss, or maintain scalp health.

Shampoos are formulated with diverse ingredients, including biotin, keratin,

caffeine, natural oils, and herbal extracts, which are believed to enhance hair
growth or prevent hair thinning. Additionally, shampoos targeted at specific
concerns, such as anti-dandruff or moisturizing shampoos, claim to create
optimal conditions for healthy hair growth by addressing underlying issues like
scalp irritation or dryness.
Statement of the Research Problem:

This study aims to investigate the effect of different types of shampoo on hair
growth in men over a specified period. By examining various shampoo types,
such as those with natural ingredients, hair growth-stimulating additives, or
basic cleansing properties, this research seeks to determine their
effectiveness in promoting hair growth and identify the most beneficial
formulations.

Hair loss and slow hair growth are common concerns among men, often
affecting self-esteem and confidence. Various shampoos are marketed with
claims to stimulate hair growth, reduce hair thinning, and improve scalp health.
However, the effectiveness of different types of shampoos in promoting hair
growth remains unclear, with little empirical research supporting the specific
impact of various ingredients or formulations. Many men use shampoos that
promise to enhance hair growth, but it is uncertain whether these products
deliver on their claims when used consistently over time.

Research Question:

1. Does the duration of shampoo use (1 month, 2 months) affect the rate of
hair growth in men?

2. Which shampoo brand (Brand A, Brand B, Brand C) shows the most

noticeable hair growth over a set period?

3. Are there any differences in the effectiveness of shampoos across different

hair types (e.g., oily, dry, or normal scalp)?

Objective of the study:

To describe the characteristics and active ingredients of different shampoo

brands, including those marketed for hair growth, and their potential benefits
for stimulating hair growth in men.
To identify the effect of different types of shampoos (e.g., caffeine-based,
biotin-enriched, natural ingredient-based) on the rate of hair growth in men
over a specified period.
To evaluate the impact of consistent shampoo use on hair growth, including
the differences in hair length and thickness after a set duration of use.

Two Key Points:

Comparison of Shampoo Effectiveness: The study will compare the

effectiveness of different types of shampoos (e.g., caffeine-based, biotin-
enriched, natural ingredient-based) in promoting hair growth in men over a set
period of time.

Impact of Ingredients on Hair Growth: The research will focus on how active
ingredients in shampoos, such as caffeine or biotin, affect the rate of hair
growth and whether shampoos marketed specifically for hair growth show
measurable improvements compared to regular shampoos.
