Valuable Features
Excerpts from real customer reviews on PeerSpot:

“The solution allows you to configure and customize how you want to collect
information from servers or other systems.”

ASM Naushad Alam

Network Manager at a financial services firm with 1,001-5,000 employees

“Templates are good. We download them from the official Zabbix site or the
community. If the information we need isn't available, we create custom
templates based on client requirements.”

BeeYospiam
Software Specialist at NTT Security

“Zabbix is good for discovery.”

“Our customers also like that they don't have to use multiple modules. Micro
Focus and major vendors typically require you to buy several modules and
plugins. Our customers do not like that. We offer them a single product for
all their monitoring needs.”

Volkan Yirik
Deputy General Manager at İdea Teknoloji

“It has improved our server performance monitoring overall. We know right
away when there are problems. It has built-in statistics, so we can go back
and see if there's spiking. We can check what's happening every day around
the same time and check the configuration to see if there's something that's
running and needs to be fixed.”

Tom Karches
Systems Specialist at a government with 5,001-10,000 employees

“The best feature is that Zabbix can report everything, and everything in
Zabbix is free.”

“We are able to monitor our virtual infrastructure, virtual machines,

windows servers, databases, and the network using a simple network
management protocol. We are able to pull almost all the metrics that we
want, receive notifications, and have them integrate with telegrams for
certain devices that are critical, such as UPSs.”

What users had to say about valuable features:

“I can pull up graphs using the parameters I want to check. You can see the current
day, week, or month. It's all built-in. We use it to bring up graphs of specific
parameters.”

designing tools permit to make monitoring stateful maps with topologies similar
to the reals IT network maps.”

“The most valuable function for me is the auto-discovery of interfaces in devices.

When you integrate devices into the tool, it automatically finds the interfaces,
which is very helpful for my job. Integration and configuration run smoothly in my
experience with Juniper and Aruba devices.”

“The template system in Zabbix is very beneficial as it saves time in configuration.

Initially, setting it up might seem challenging, but using pre-made templates
makes integration with switches easier. By leveraging templates, configuration
becomes more straightforward and efficient.”

“Personally, I like the Zabbix API. When many devices need configuration, we
automate it with the API and Python scripts. For example, we can automatically
add routers to Zabbix using the API and Python.

So, the API and automation are the best features. Learning the API and using tools
like Python for automation is important, rather than adding network devices
manually.”

Pain Points
The main pain points mentioned:

“The solution needs to add features for finding loopholes or problems and
their root causes.”

ASM Naushad Alam

Network Manager at a financial services firm with 1,001-5,000 employees

“The reporting features need improvement, especially detailed inventory

reporting. Since it's freeware, reporting may not be a major focus.”

companies use SUSE.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Zabbix

“Implementing Zabbix is difficult. I've deployed many solutions over the

years, and Zabbix is the hardest to implement. You have to do some
development to get it to work with IBM, Micro Focus, or HP products.”

Volkan Yirik
Deputy General Manager at İdea Teknoloji

“Sometimes, the documentation is a little bit written in Estonia – a country

in Europe. The language barrier and translation to English can sometimes
make it difficult to understand what they're trying to get at. It's just a
language thing.”

Tom Karches
Systems Specialist at a government with 5,001-10,000 employees

“The only issue we have had with Zabbix is when we decided to make an
update or upgrade.”

Simon KONAN
Network engineer at DIRECTION GÉNÉRALE DES IMPÔTS - DGI

“Zabbix does not draw automatic mapping of the network, this is something
they should add in the future. There is a lot of effort that is involved in
tailoring some of the settings which could be made easier.”

Room for improvement:

“The only issue we have had with Zabbix is when we decided to make an update or
upgrade. Initially, we were using version 5, and we upgraded to version 6.

The issue with the upgrade was when we decided to upgrade from version 6 to
version 7. When we did this upgrade, we had some issues with our database. It
wasn’t really easy to resolve this issue because the community support is not as
large or as big as Centreon.”

“My company wanted to do an exercise command to access IT from Cameroon.

They wanted to access an FSS to a second host with second equipment that was on
another coast but it is not possible on Zabbix to do it. They want to directly access
from the front-end of Zabbix to access a prompt in Zabbix to an access terminal. In
the front-end, there is no way to do that. That would be an important
improvement. ”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Zabbix

“To improve Zabbix, adding more features to support the monitoring of modern
workloads like containers would be beneficial. Many environments are shifting
away from traditional setups to remote and customized infrastructures. Enhancing
Zabbix to accommodate these changes would make it more appealing and user-
friendly. This would help organizations like mine in selecting the most suitable
monitoring solution.”

Daniel Ejike Read full review

VMware & Cloud Solutions Architect at Géant

“The reporting features need improvement, especially detailed inventory

reporting. Since it's freeware, reporting may not be a major focus.

When an audit happens, we rely on the API to support the auditor. If we had
stronger reporting built-in, it would provide more information for the audit
process. I think that would be a good addition to Zabbix.

Zabbix could use improvements in its database handling. I'm not sure if it has
performance limitations in large-scale environments. We've faced performance
issues when using it in a big financial institution in Thailand. The performance
issues were a big problem.”

“Sometimes, the documentation is a little bit awkwardly written. The language

barrier and translation to English can sometimes make it difficult to understand
what they're trying to get at. It's just a language thing.

We can usually figure it out, but that's the biggest thing I can think of. Other than
that, it's been extremely reliable. ”

“In the next release, I'm hoping for features targeted towards larger users with
more customizable options. Despite this, I think pre-canned reports that can be
used straight out of the box would be beneficial rather than having to configure
each report individually. Additionally, a deeper dive into software configurations
on the machines would be useful, although I understand there may be challenges
in implementing this due to scripting requirements. More documentation would
also be appreciated.”

When they replace their solutions with Zabbix, the return on investment is
immediate because they don't pay support or licensing fees. They're saving more
than $1 million in some cases. Some customers are paying upwards of $2.5 million
for software support alone. These commercial solutions usually have
several modules that are difficult to maintain and upgrade. ”

“I have experience with SolarWinds and ManageEngine.

SolarWinds is good, but it requires learning and understanding. With Zabbix, if we

get the OID [Object Identifier] from the vendor, we can create templates and
monitor any device quickly.

With SolarWinds or ManageEngine, we sometimes need to wait for the developers

to create monitoring solutions.

We have less waiting time with Zabbix. I find Zabbix faster than commercial
solutions when a new device needs monitoring.

So, the learning curve is a bit easier with Zabbix. My team learned Zabbix
independently using online resources. We find resources on the internet. No one
attends official training. I think it's good practice, learning this way.”

“We also have been using WhatsUp Gold for ten years. Zappix is a Linux solution
and WhatsUp Gold is a Windows solution.

We have a basic license for WhatsUp Gold and have purchased upgrades. In our
country, there is no local expert tied with the OEM. The support team that
is provided is not acceptable to us.

The solutions, SolarWinds and WhatsUp Gold, are good for monitoring servers but
lack the functionality to find problems or root causes for any system, application,
or service.

ThousandEyes and AppDynamics find actual problems with networks,

applications, or services. We are looking more at these products because our goal is
to find all loopholes.

For example, the solution or WhatsUp Gold might identify a packet loss. But
ThousandEyes or AppDynamics will drill to the highest problem such as the HTML
or a Cisco network problem. This approach is much more interesting. ”

“The previous product was really outdated and, literally, it was broken. It should
have been updated years earlier.

It was running but struggling. For example, it would get behind on its checks, and
once it got too far behind, it would just throw them all away and start over. It was
constantly missing things. It was clearly overloaded and not designed for our scale,
so we were happy to move away from it. The difference after switching to Zabbix
has been night and day.

I used to get paged at least once a day, sometimes multiple times. Now, with
Zabbix, there might be weeks without any pages. We've never had a problem
where we missed an alert.

It's great that the checks are much more intelligent. For example, rather than just
saying, tell me when the load goes over five, you can say, "Tell me if the load is
over five for more than ten minutes." So, if it doesn't go over five for ten minutes,
you'll never get notified. It only waits for a combination of conditions to be true
before it alerts you. That really cuts down a lot on the false positives.

We used a heavily customized Nagios. I wouldn't compare this old version to

whatever is current so this is not a criticism of Nagios.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Zabbix

“It has improved our overall server performance monitoring. We know right away
when there are problems. It has built-in statistics, so we can identify if there's
spiking. We can see what's happening every day around the same time and check
the configuration to see if there's something that's malfunctioning and needs to
be fixed. As we get better at diagnosis, we can go back and look at the history of the
systems to pinpoint problems.”

“We add many hosts and network devices to Zabbix and integrate it with Grafana.
Grafana connects to the Zabbix database and sends out the notifications. This is
how the alerting and notification system in Zabbix improves the response time to
incidents.

Templates are good. We download them from the official Zabbix site or the
community. If the information we need isn't available, we create custom
templates based on client requirements.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Zabbix

“Zabbix has greatly improved operations and maintenance by helping

management and technical teams be more proactive. They can easily spot
problems or undesired states on the infrastructure or customer services

With the Zabbix out-of-box multitenancy support, customers can have restricted
access to their service utilizations and other operational data in real time or on
demand. The feedback from customers shows they are very happy and they
appreciate how easy it is to learn using it.

Time to work on issues is greatly reduced, as Zabbix provides powerful alerts and
details into what is happening in our network. Issues that could take weeks to
resolve can now easily be spotted in a few minutes as all essential metrics for all
devices are monitored in real time.

Zabbix fits well with the multi-vendor environment and it has a lot of out-of-box
templates that can be customized to fit our needs.

We can easily provide infrastructure status reports with Zabbix. We can produce
reports even for old devices that were not properly and consistently monitored
since they were installed.”

What users had to say about valuable features:

“Synthetic testing is by far the most valuable feature in our organization. It’s
highly requested since the setup process is both quick and straightforward,
allowing us to simulate user interactions across our applications with minimal
effort.

The ease of configuring tests and interpreting the results makes it accessible even
to non-technical team members. This feature provides valuable insights into user
experience, helps identify performance bottlenecks, and ensures that our critical
workflows are functioning as expected, enhancing reliability and uptime.”

“Dashboards are the most valuable. We need the observability. We have given the
dashboards to a dedicated team to monitor them off working hours and they are
reporting whatever they see going red. This helps us since people without any
knowledge can understand when there is a problem and when to react and when to
inform others by simply looking if the monitor (showing the dashboards) turns up
red.

Traces being connected to each other and seeing that each service is connected
through one API call is very helpful for us to understand how the system works.”

has become an essential part of my daily workflow.

The user interface is incredibly intuitive. When I first started using it, I was amazed
at how easy it was to navigate. The design is clean and straightforward, allowing
me to focus on the data rather than getting lost in complicated menus. Whether

metrics, and I could correlate the two.

Across CCM and the rest of Datadog, I like how sharable everything is. It's so easy
to share dashboards and links with my teammates so we can quickly get up to
speed on debugging/solving an issue.

I also have really enjoyed K8s view of pods and pod health. It's very visual, and as a
non-K8s platform owner at my company, I can still observe the overall health of
the system. Then I can drill in and have learned things about K8s by exploring that
part of the product and talking with the team.”

“Agent remote configuration should be provided/improved and streamlined,

allowing for config changes/upgrades to be performed via the portal instead of at
the host.

Cost tracking via the admin portal is a bit lacking, even though it has gotten
better. I'm looking for usage trends (that drive cost) across time and better
visibility or notifications about on-demand charges.

Network device and performance monitoring could be improved, as we've faced

some limitations in this area.

The Datadog usage-based cost model, while giving us better transparency, is

difficult to follow at times and is constantly evolving. ”

difficult to fully understand and utilize to its maximum potential.

The data provided is comprehensive, yet it can sometimes be overwhelming,

Simplifying the interface, offering clearer guidance, or providing more intuitive

gone red and which pod exactly is to blame in a scenario where the pod is
restarting, for example.

Prices are a very difficult thing in Datadog. We have to be very mindful of any
changes we make in Datadog, and we are a bit afraid of using new features since, if
we change something, we might get charged a lot. For example, if we add a
network feature to our nodes, we might get charged a lot simply by changing one
flag, even though we are only going to use one small feature for those network
nodes. However, due to the fact that we have more than 50 nodes, all of the nodes
will be charged for the feature of "Network hosts".

This leads us to not fully utilize the capabilities of Datadog, and it's a
shame. Maybe we can have a grace period to test features like a trial and then have
datadog stop that for us to avoid paying more by mistake.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Datadog

“We've had some issues where we had Datadog automatically turned on in AWS
regions that we weren't using, which incurred a small but steady cost that
amounted to tens of thousands of dollars spent over a few weeks. I wish there was
a global setting that lets an admin restrict which regions DD is turned on in as a
default setup step.

Sometimes, the APM service dashboard link isn't sharable. I click something in the
service catalog, and on that service's APM default view, I try to share a link to that
with a teammate, and they reach a blank or error screen.

I wish there was more organization and detail in the suggestions when I use the
query editor. I'm never quite sure when the autofill dropdown shows up if I'm
seeing some custom tag or some default property, so I have to know exactly what
I'm looking for in order to build a chart. It's hard to navigate and explore using the
query autofill suggestions without knowing exactly what tag to look for.

It's been a bit hard to understand how data gets sampled or how many data points
a particular dashboard value is using. We've had questions over the RUM metrics
that we see and we had to ask for help with how values are calculated, bin sizes, etc
to get confidence in our data.”

companies have picked up the slack. Now, you have other tools which provide a
higher ROI. I cannot give a specific ROI percentage since I don't use it for personal
use with deployment. We deploy it on behalf of customers. Obviously, depending
on the deal, depending on the size, and the ROI will vary. If people are looking for
a global monitoring solution in the same tool as Datadog network monitoring, they
are always hindered as Datadog does not provide an adequate solution for it. That
kind of decreases the ROI since you still need to get another tool to do the network

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Datadog

“I have less experience with Zabbix than I have with Datadog, but I don't see
Zabbix as a great tool for cloud specific monitoring because I cannot connect so
easily to public clouds to gain all the information that I can in Datadog, which I can
easily set up.

I have used Zabbix for 20 days for my personal tests and I really don't like it.

There is something that I liked with Zabbix, though. Zabbix is better for
monitoring virtual machines. That's a feature that I liked. But everything else is
awful. I can't have dashboards. I do not have integrations with some ITSM
systems, like Jira or OTRS. It's awful because I need to have those integrations.

I would rate Zabbix a nine from one to ten for on premises environments. For cloud
platforms, I rate this tool as a five, because of the complexity required to integrate
it in other platforms.”

Product Impact

“Before Datadog, we faced the common challenge of fragmented data. Our logs,
metrics, and traces were spread across different tools and platforms, making it
difficult to get a complete picture of our system’s health.

With Datadog, we now have a centralized monitoring solution that aggregates

everything in one place. This has streamlined our workflow immensely. Whether
it’s logs from our servers, metrics from our applications, or traces from user
transactions, we can access all this information easily. This unified view has made
it simpler for our teams to identify and troubleshoot issues quickly.”

“Logs are great. Having all services with different teams sending the logs to
Datadog and having all logs in the same place is very helpful for us to understand
what is going on in our app; filtering of the logs a huge help and adding special
custom filters is easy, filters are fast. Documentation is better than average, with
little room for improvement.

Dashboards are simple, and monitors are very easy to configure and get notified if
something is wrong.

With the aggregated logs, we can now see logs from other systems and identify
problems in other areas in which we had no visibility before.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Datadog

“We have been using Datadog since I started working at the company ten years ago
and it has been used for many reasons over the years. Datadog across our services
has helped debug slow performance on specific parts of our application, which, in
turn, allows us to provide a snappier and more performant application for our
customers.

The monitoring and alerting system has allowed our team to be aware of the issues
that have come up in our production system and react faster with more tools to
debug and view to keep the system online for our customers.”

“This provides a single place to find monitoring data. Prior to DD, we had some
metrics living in New Relic, some in Grafana, and some in Circonus, and it was very
confusing to navigate across them. Understanding different query languages is
challenging. Here, there's a single UI to get used to, and everything is so sharable.

DD has led to teams making more decisions based on data that they observe about
their service metrics and RUM metrics. I've seen decisions get made based on what
has been observed in DD, and less based on anecdotal data.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Datadog

“Datadog has greatly improved our organization by centralizing all monitoring

into one platform, allowing us to consolidate data from a wide range of sources.

From infrastructure metrics and application logs to end-user experience and

device monitoring, everything is now collected and displayed in one place. This has
simplified our monitoring processes, improved visibility, and allowed for faster
issue detection and resolution.

By streamlining these operations, Datadog has enhanced both efficiency and

collaboration across teams.”

“We now have full-stack observability, which allows us to better understand

application behavior, quickly alert users about issues, and proactively manage
application performance.

We've seen value by implementing observability coordinated across multiple

applications, allowing us to track things like customer shopping and orders across
multiple applications and services.

For critical application launches, we've built dashboards that can track user
activity and confirm users are able to successfully utilize new features, tracking
user activities in real-time in a war-room situation.

Datadog is our go-to tool for analyzing, understanding, and investigating

application performance and behavior.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Customer Review

What is our primary use case?

“I implement Zabbix for large companies with over 5,000 employees.”

What needs improvement?

“In the near future, we are going to see integration with its cloud platform.

We would like to use it for RBI, for service and credibility reports for our manager
and management staff, and we also hope to use it to deliver customer scripts, etc.
Currently, because we monitor over 5,000 hosts and servers, we need to use open
source. ”

For how long have I used the solution?

“I have used Zabbix for the last five years.”

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

“Zabbix is both stable and scalable. As I mentioned earlier, we scale more than
5,000 hosts.”

How are customer service and support?

“Currently, our own team provides support, but in the future, we may use Zabbix
support.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Customer Review

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

“We also use Nagios, but we are going to stop using this solution as it has specific
limitations that we require. ”

How was the initial setup?

“For us, the initial setup was complex. We plan on integrating Zabbix with
Prometheus and Grafana for a smooth relationship between dashboards. ”

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

“We purchased Zabbix for a good price, including support. It's cheaper than
Datadog and ScienceLogic.”

What other advice do I have?

“On a scale from one to ten, I would give Zabbix a rating of nine, strictly because
we would like to see better integration with mobile TeleCloud.”

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Customer Review

What is our primary use case?

“The current use case for Datadog in our environment is observability. We use
Datadog as the primary log ingestion and analysis point, along with consolidation
of application/infrastructure metrics across cloud environments and realtime
alerting to issues that arise in production.

Datadog integrates within all aspects of our infrastructure and applications to

provide valuable insights into Containers, Serverless functions, Deep Logging
Analysis, Virtualized Hardware and Cost Optimizations.”

How has it helped my organization?

“Datadog improved our observability layer by creating a consistent, centralized

service for all of our varied cloud-based applications. All of our production and
non-production environment applications and infrastructure send metrics
directly to Datadog for analysis and determination of any issues that would need to
be looked at by the Infrastructure, Platform and Development teams for quick
remediation. Using Datadog as this centralized Observability platform has enabled
us to become leaner without sacrificing project timelines when issues arise and
require triage for efficient resolution.”

What is most valuable?

“All of Datadog's features have become valuable tools in our cloud environments.

Our primary alerts, based on metrics and synthetic transactions, are the most used
and relied upon for decreased MTTA/MTTR across all of our platforms. This is
followed by deep log analysis that enables us to quickly and easily get to a
preliminary root cause that someone on the infrastructure, platform or
development teams can take and focus their attention on the precise target
that Datadog revealed as the issue to be remediated.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Customer Review

What needs improvement?

“The two areas I could see needing improvement or a feature to add value are
building a more robust SIM that would include container scanning to rival other
such products on the market so we do not need to extend functionality to another
third-party provider. The other expands the alerting functions by creating a new
feature to add direct SMS notifications, on-call rotation scheduling, etc., that
could replace the need to have this as an external third party solution
integration. ”

For how long have I used the solution?

“I've been a Datadog user for almost ten years.”

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

“Datadog is very stable, and we've only come across a few items that needed to be
addressed quickly when there were issues.”

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

“Scalability is very favorable, aside from cost/budget, which limits the scalability
of this platform.”

How are customer service and support?

“Both customer service and support need a little work, as we have had a number of
requests/issues that were not addressed as we needed them to be.”

Zabbix vs. Datadog ▪ Customer Review

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

“Being an Observability SME, I have used many native and third party solutions,
including Dynatrace, New Relic, CloudWatch and Zabbix. As previously mentioned,
Datadog provides a superior platform for centralizing and consolidating our
Observability layer. Switching to Datadog was a no-brainer when most other
solutions either didn't provide the maturity of functions, or have them available,
at all.”

How was the initial setup?

“The initial setup was very straightforward, and the integrations were easily
configured.”

What about the implementation team?

“We implemented Datadog in-house.”

What was our ROI?

“For the most part, Datadog's ROI is quite impressive when you consider all of the
features and functions that are centralized on the platform. It doesn't require us to
purchase additional third-party solutions to fill in the gaps.”

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

“The setup was dead simple once the cloud integrations and agent components
were identified and executed. Licensing falls into our normal third-party

processes, so it was a familiar feeling when we started with Datadog. Cost is the
only outlier when it comes to a perfect solution. Datadog is expensive, and each
add-on drives that cost further into the realm of requiring justifications to finance
expanding the core suite of features we would like to enable.”

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

“Yes, we evaluated several competing platforms that included Dynatrace, New

Relic and Zabbix.”

What other advice do I have?

“They should provide more inclusive pricing, or an "all you can eat" tier that would
include all relevant features, as opposed to individual cost increases to let Datadog
to become more valuable and replace even more third-party solutions that have a
lower cost of entry.”

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
