EARTH’S ROTATION AND REVOLUTION

EFFECT OF EARTH’S TILT
SEASONS IN THE PHILIPPINES

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
How does Earth rotate as it revolves around the Sun?
What is the effect of Earth’s tilt on the amount of energy received on Earth’s
surface?
Why are there only two seasons in the Philippines?

DAY AND NIGHT

* How does Earth rotate as it revolves around the Sun?

ROTATION OF EARTH

EARTH’S ROTATION AND REVOLUTION

Rotation-the movement of the Earth on its axis
Axis or axis of rotation- an imaginary line that passes through the North and South
poles of the planet.
The Earth moves sideways, being tilted at about 23.50 towards the sun’s direction.
It takes about 23 hours and 56 minutes
(or approximately 24 hours)
Corresponds to the length of one day.

REVOLUTION OF EARTH

Revolution-the circular movement of the planet around the sun

Orbit- imaginary circular line/path followed by the Earth as it travels around the
sun
It takes about 365 ¼ days or 1 year to complete 1 revolution

* What causes the four seasons?
> Since the Earth is tilted at an angle from the axis, the Earth receives different
amount of heat from the sun. This allows unequal heating of the Earth’s surface.
Some areas may be cooler or hotter than others.
> At some point as the Earth revolves around the sun, the Earth is nearer to the
sun thus, receiving more heat than the rest of the year.
> Places found between 23.50 N latitude and 66.50 N latitude, and 23.50 S latitude
and 66.50 S latitude experience the four seasons – spring, summer, autumn, and
winter.1

Seasons and Peak Days

* SOLSTICE – more sunlight on one hemisphere than the other

-
->-Summer solstice is the day when the Northern Hemisphere receives the
most of sunlight. The Southern Hemisphere experiences winter solstice
at this time. The Earth’s axis is tilted away from the sun.

> Daytime becomes shorter than nighttime.

3

->Winter solstice is the day when the Northern hemisphere receives the
least sunlight. The Southern Hemisphere receives most of the sunlight
thus, beginning the summer solstice

EQUINOX – day and night are of equal length in the northern and southern hemisphere

--Spring or vernal equinox marks the day when the North Pole starts to point away
from
the sun.
--Fall or autumnal equinox is of opposite position to the spring equinox.

Factors affecting the change of the seasons:2

Tilting of Earth’s axis
Maintaining the same direction and inclining of Earth’s axis throughout Earth’s
journey around the sun
Changing orientation of Earth’s axis with respect to the sun as the planet travels
around the sun

SEASONS IN THE PHILIPPINES

In countries like the Philippines, they experience only two seasons unlike
the others with four. The Philippines is situated just above the equator and
generally, it is warm and humid because places near the equator always receive
sunlight year round.
Wet Season (tag-init)– June to October – caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat)
Dry Season (tag-ulan) – November to May – caused by the northeast monsoon (amihan)
