THE IMPOSSIBLE

The Impossible (2012), directed by J.A. Bayona, is a profoundly moving film that immerses
audiences in the catastrophic events of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, recognized as one of
the most catastrophic natural disasters in contemporary history. Inspired by the true story of
María Belón and her family, the film presents a poignant narrative of survival, grief, and the
remarkable resilience of the human spirit. Featuring performances by Naomi Watts and Ewan
McGregor, the film effectively conveys the turmoil and emotional gravity of the disaster through
a combination of striking visuals, sincere performances, and a steadfast emphasis on the
characters' experiences. For me, The Impossible transcended mere cinematic entertainment it
was a deeply emotional journey. Observing the Bennett family's struggle against insurmountable
challenges prompted profound reflections on life's unpredictability and the significance of
resilience. Additionally, this film highlighted the importance of compassion and humanity,
particularly in times of crisis. In this reflection, I will explore my thoughts and insights regarding
the film, focusing on its depiction of nature's might, the strength of family bonds, and the
necessity of kindness in the face of adversity. Closely associated with it, it was also highly
inspiring to see how the Bennett family is connected in the film. Despite the tsunami, they had
loved each other and an intent of searching each other gave them the strength to continue
living. Maria, the mother together with the eldest son Lucas was pulled away by the flood and
the father Henry, and the other two children who are Thomas and Simon were not swept away.
Some of them were very touching, especially Maria’s. Regardless the extent of her injuries she
prioritized her son safety over hers. I do not think they will have a better survival chance but they
give their best to stay alive to protect Lucas. Her relationship and love for her son demonstrated
the tremendous resolve a parent has when caring for a child. Afterwards Lucas was incredibly
courageous and mature for someone so young. Instead of being afraid, he offered his help not
only to his mother but other survivors they met along the way. Henry, too, had a grueling
experience looking for his family. But hope to bring back Maria and Lucas he had never gave it
up even when it was almost too late proved what kind of person I would be for the people that
matter to me. Seeing the family to be reunited after such a long time really made me touch with
feelings of emotion that actually made me cry. This must be a great lesson to learn and how
love can help us no matter how hard the situation we are in. The next topic in The Impossible is
the idea of strength. It was hell on for the characters who went through probably every form of
torture possible physical and emotional and they still did not quit. We admired the strength that
Maria had for her to be strong with such a condition as she was. During those moments when
she wanted to die because of excruciating pain she attempted to live for her son. And, last but
not the least, a gross amount of mental toughness was displayed by Lucas, the main figure of
the movie. Being a teenager he could have gotten so overwhelmed by it that he was easily
frightened, but instead he became strength for his mum and others. I was also touched when
Lucas went back to the hospital to bring a man his lost family. This man’s kindness under the
extreme circumstances just stated was touched by a simple act of kindness from a stranger.
What is or is not a person capable of surviving, is not only a physical issue but also an
emotional one. It is also such a good example of someone getting up and continuing to look for
his family when all hope seems lost. Finally, the audience saw that no matter how everything
turns to be unrealistic, we can always get through all the hardships always trying to hold on to
hope and love. In as much as the movie portrays the Bennett’s family, it includes some scenes
of the tsunami fatalities. Many people died while, millions of others were affected in one way or
the other. Some of the scenes to do with destructions, overwhelmed hospitals, and families
were a persuasion of the extend of pain that the disaster had caused. This made me to think of
various disaster response initiatives in the world for needy affected persons. No matter how we
contribute through charitable contributions, giving our time, or speaking out it is incumbent on
everyone to do their part to and restore these communities. The movie also enabled me
understand why other humanitarian organization such as Red Cross step in to help during such
times. In conclusion a film which made me shocked. I would consider it as a story of a tsunami
and of love as well as the best in people. This motion picture brought me back to the fact that
life is very unsure and that we need to evaluate the few things that matter in life. It also taught
me if there is one thing that human beings have in abundance that one can never run out of it
and that is hope. I also got an important lesson in decency and benevolence while watching the
movie. It really does take a village to remind us to care for one another in a time of tragedy, it’s
the little things that count the most. After seeing this movie I felt it helped me learn something
about myself and the world and how I should be more thankful, strong, and forgiving. The
Impossible is not just a movie that is an example of what every person has inside and that we all
need help in such a situation.
