𝒙 𝒚 𝒙 𝒚
d. 1.2x – 1.1y = 7.9 and 1.8x + 0.7y = 0.1
e. c + d + 6 = 2c – 5d – 3 = 3c – 4d + 2
f. 3(x + y) = 7(y – x) and 5(3x – y) = x + 3

g. 2x – y = 5 and 4x2 – 9y2 = - 17

h. 2x + y = 5 and x2 + y2 = 25
i. x – 3y = 1 and x2 – 2xy – y2 = 7.
TASK 2 – WORD PROBLEMS
𝟏
1. Find the number n such that when 𝟑 of it is added to 8, the result is the same as when ½ of it is
subtracted from 18.
2. Two rectangles have the same area of 24cm2. The second rectangle is 4cm shorter and 1cm wider than
the first. What is the length and breadth of the first rectangle?
3. A plate costs ₦x and a bowl costs ₦y. if the price of each is raised by ₦20, the ratio of their prices
becomes 5 : 2, respectively. If the price of each is reduced by ₦5, the ratio becomes 5 : 1. Express the
ratio x : y in its lowest terms.
4. A woman is 35 years old and her son is 12 years old. How many years ago was the product of their ages
174?
5. If I subtract 1 from the numerator of a fraction, the fraction becomes ½ . if I add 1 to both the
𝟐
numerator and denominator of the fraction, it becomes 𝟑. What is the fraction?
6. The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 13. When the digits are interchanges, the number
increases by 27, what is the two-digit number?
