CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A solar inverter is an important component of a solar energy system. It converts the fluctuating DC
output of the Photovoltaic module(s) into a clean sinusoidal 50Hz or 60Hz AC current, which is
subsequently applied to the commercial electrical grid or a local, off-grid electrical network. A solar cell
(also known as a photovoltaic cell) is the smallest solid-state device that directly converts energy from
the sun into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. A photovoltaic module is a collection of cells
connected in parallel or series to increase voltage and current. A panel is a structure-mounted assembly
of modules.

An array is a collection of panels assembled at a location. Communication connectivity is typically

incorporated so that users may monitor the inverter and report on power and operational conditions, as
well as offer firmware updates and regulate the inverter grid connection. A real-time microprocessor is
at the heart of the inverter. The controller runs the complex algorithms required to convert the DC
voltage generated by the solar panel to alternating current (AC). This controller is programmed to
conduct all power management control loops, including DC/DC and DC/AC. The controller also
maximizes PV power output using complex algorithms known as Maximum Power Point Tracking. The
maximum output power of a PV system is determined by the operating conditions and changes from
moment to moment due to cloud cover, soil age, shading, temperature and time of the day. As a result,
adjusting this maximum power point is a continuous process. The controller in systems with battery
energy storage can control charging and switch to battery power when the sun sets, or cloud cover
decreases the PV output power. (Aditee P. Bapat et al 2013).

1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

If there is one aspect that has kept Nigeria's status as a developing country constant, it is its electricity
sector. Many households and businesses are still not able to rely on the public grid for a continuous
electricity supply. Despite massive financial resources invested in the sector, Nigeria cannot provide
adequate electricity to its inhabitants at the current stage of social and economic development. Rather,
Nigerians have continued to rely on electricity generators for power supply; fuel marketers are taking a
significant portion of household and business inc and noise pollution from regular humming generators
has become an integral part of life for lots of Nigerians, with unimaginable health consequences. As a
result of these issues, there is a need to design and build a solar panel inverter to supplement the public
grid power supply. An inverter that makes no noise and has no negative impact on human health.omes

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This project aims to design and construct a 1KVA Solar based electric power system.

The objectives of this project are;

*To design and simulate a 1KVA, 12V solar power-based inverter circuit using Proteus software.

*To construct the designed inverter circuit on a printed circuit board and assemble it in a casing.

*To implement the power system by connecting and testing the procured solar panel, the charge
controller, the battery, and the inverter.

1.3 SCOPE OF STUDY

This solar-powered power supply provides a clean, reliable alternative power supply that can be used as
a regular power source by individuals at homes or offices, and industries in rural areas. This project
involves the design and construction of a Solar based electric power system that involves a Solar panel,
charge controller, battery, and 1KVA pure sine wave inverter. Also, as people generate their electricity,
they also benefit from reduced electricity bills.
