Zomato Food Delivery

Zomato is an online food delivery service that allows users to order food from restaurants,
track their orders, and get help from customer support. Zomato is available in over 1,000
cities in India and the UAE.

Related Environment Policies & Initiatives:-

● Don’t send cutlery initiative (2021): Zomato made "no cutlery required" the default
option on its app to reduce plastic waste. This initiative has resulted in a reduction of
restaurant orders sent with cutlery by 70%, preventing usage of single-use materials
and reducing an estimated ~700 Metric Tons of cutlery waste by 2023.

● Climate Conscious Deliveries Initiative: In support of the climate group’s global

electric mobility initiative (EV100), Zomato is determined to convert 100% of its
delivery fleet into electric vehicles by 2030. By March 2023, Zomato had an active EV
delivery fleet of approximately 13,500 vehicles, which represents a threefold increase
compared to March 2022.

Additionally, Inorder to spread awareness Zomato regularly organises EV fairs, where

various EV-bike manufacturers and rental companies showcase their models. These
events also provide delivery partners with opportunities to test-ride the electric
vehicles on display. Till date ~2,37,000 delivery partners have been made aware of
the benefits of EVs via digital and offline communication campaigns.

● 100% Plastic-Neutral Deliveries: In 2023, Zomato voluntarily recycled 20,000

metric tons of plastic waste collected from 28 states, more than double the amount of
plastic used by restaurants for packaging orders.

● Pooling Delivery Services Initiative - Zomato has recently started inculcating pool
services for orders which means that instead of having multiple delivery drivers each
delivering a single order to different locations, the orders can be grouped together
and delivered in a single trip. By combining orders into a single route, the delivery
drivers can cover more ground with fewer trips, reducing the overall distance
travelled and, consequently, the amount of carbon emission.

Hyperpure by Zomato
Hyperpure by Zomato provides fresh, high-quality ingredients directly from farmers to
restaurants and home cooks.

Elaboration on Zomato HyperPure's Environmental Initiatives:-

1. Farm-to-Fork Model - By sourcing ingredients directly from local farms, HyperPure

minimises the distance travelled, reducing carbon emissions associated with
transportation. Further, this model ensures that ingredients reach restaurants and
home cooks in a fresher state, reducing food waste due to spoilage.

2. Sustainable Packaging - HyperPure encourages restaurants to use packaging

materials that are biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable.
3. Plastic-Free Orders Packathon (2024) - In collaboration with Start-Up India,
Hyperpure organised a competition aimed at encouraging innovation in sustainable
packaging for food delivery orders in India. People from all across India came up with
sustainable packaging ideas and top 10 of them received investment from Zomato.
Further, those solutions got featured on Hyperpure's website for restaurants to make
purchases and adopt them.

4. Hydroponic Farming - Hydroponic farming is a method of growing plants in a

water-based nutrient solution instead of soil. This technique uses significantly less
water compared to traditional agriculture and less land, preserving natural habitats
and reducing soil erosion.

BlinkIt - Zomato

Environmental Initiatives and Policies Adopted by Blinkit :-

1. Shipping and Transportation - Blinkit has significantly increased its use of electric
vehicles (EVs) in its last-mile delivery fleet. This transition from traditional
fuel-powered vehicles helps reduce carbon emissions. By switching to EVs, Blinkit
has achieved a more than 9% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional
vehicles.

2. Sustainable Packaging - Over 75% of BlinkIt’s packaging is already done in

sustainable materials, such as compostable bags and cloth bags and additionally
they make sure that the fruits and vegetables are packed in recycled paper rather
than plastic.

3. Partnership with CHUK (Chuk is India’s leading compostable food service ware
brand) - BlinkIt has partnered with CHUK to offer a range of plant-based,
compostable disposable tableware, including plates, trays, and bowls.

4. BlinkIt International Rakhi Delivery Initiative - Blinkit is now offering international

Raksha Bandhan gift delivery services to customers in 6 countries, allowing them to
send gifts to their siblings in India. This initiative, though not mentioned by them, but
when analysed lead to a potential reduction in cross- country transportation which
significantly reduced the overall carbon footprint associated with travel.

5. Increased Dark Stores Initiative by 2026 (Micro-fulfilment centre in 2-3 km radius

from customer) - Blinkit is aiming to take its dark store tally to 2,000 by the end of
2026. Increasing the number of Dark Stores in tier 2 and below cities reduces the
distance that products need to travel from warehouses to customers. This can lead to
fewer miles driven and, consequently, lower carbon emissions.

Feeding India by Zomato

Feeding India is a social initiative by Zomato aimed at addressing hunger and food waste in
India. It operates as a food rescue and distribution platform, connecting surplus food from
restaurants, hotels, and individuals with people in need.

Here's how it works:

● Food Collection: Feeding India partners with various establishments to collect
excess food that would otherwise be discarded.
● Distribution: The collected food is then distributed to shelters, orphanages, and
communities facing food insecurity.
● Volunteer Network: A network of volunteers helps in the collection, transportation,
and distribution of food.
● Technology Platform: Feeding India utilises a technology platform to streamline the
process, connecting donors and recipients efficiently.

Through its efforts, Feeding India has been able to provide meals to countless people in
need, reducing food waste and making a significant impact on the community.

Zomato Intercity Legends Service

Zomato Intercity Legends was an initiative launched by Zomato to deliver food items across
cities. However, despite its convenience, the service faced significant challenges.
Environmental drawbacks included increased carbon emissions due to long-distance
transportation, packaging waste, and potential food spoilage during delivery. Additionally, the
service faced operational difficulties, such as logistical complexities, high costs, and
inconsistent delivery times. As a result, Zomato ultimately decided to discontinue the
Intercity Legends initiative, focusing instead on strengthening its core food delivery services
within cities.

Zomato Large Orders Initiative

Zomato has introduced a 100% electric vehicle (EV) fleet specifically for large orders,
ensuring zero tailpipe emissions. This initiative helps reduce the need for deploying multiple
delivery vehicles for a single order, contributing to a more efficient and environmentally
friendly delivery system.

Tailpipe emissions refer to the pollutants released into the atmosphere from the exhaust
pipe of a vehicle. These emissions can include carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse
gas contributing to climate change, as well as other harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides
(NOx) and particulate matter (PM).
