And what do you do?
Software Developer
I'm a software developer, working in development teams of between five and ten people. Projects
are broken down into two-week blocks, and everyone on the team takes a task suited to them,
which they either choose themselves or have assigned to them by their manager. We're always
changing our approach to design, as you can never be sure what problems will come up. There are
often bugs in the system that show up after I think I've finished, which I learn about through
feedback from colleagues or customers. This happens to everyone on my team, so twice a week we
sit down together and discuss how to solve our bug problems. It's a good industry to work in if
you're ambitious, like me. If I keep doing well, it might even be managing my own team next year.
Ethical Hacker
I help businesses to locate weaknesses in their computer systems which could potentially be hacked
by cybercriminals. If there are weak areas, I find them and fix them. I'm never sure what I'm going to
find and need to be completely ready for anything. If I try to think like the hacker I'm working
against, I work more effectively. I tend to stay away from Instagram and TikTok and everything – I
know what someone could do if they got into my personal data. But I love my job and wouldn't work
in another industry if you paid me double my salary.
Agronomist
Our clients are farmers having problems growing their crops. I'll go along, do tests on and under the
ground in their fields, check their crops for unwanted insects and diseases, and advise the grower
how to solve any issues. I get such satisfaction from knowing I've been able to help them. When I
first started after graduating, I'd get frustrated about how little I knew about being an agronomist in
the real world. Once I became familiar with the business, though, all that hard work at university
paid off. I spend more time than you'd imagine in the office, inputting data from soil tests, but it's far
from being a boring office job. Even when you plan your weeks down to the last second, something
always comes up to change everything.
