v Pronunciation hint: When you say the voiceless popping sounds /p/, /t/, /k/, and /ʧ/ at the
beginning of a word, there should be a small puff of air. The voiced sounds /b/, /d/, /ɡ/, and
/ʤ/ don’t have a puff of air.
v Hold a piece of thin paper in front of your mouth as you say these sounds.
When you say /p/, /t/, /k/, /ʧ/ the paper moves a little.
When you say /b/, /d/, /ɡ/, /ʤ/ the paper doesn’t move.
v Practice reading this story. Circle the popping sounds that you hear.
Last Tuesday, the Thomas family decided to have a party for their daughter Jenny’s tenth birthday.
They packed a picnic lunch with sandwiches, chips, and cake and drove to a beautiful beach.
Since Jenny likes baseball, they brought along a plastic bat and ball. They played baseball for quite
a while, and when they felt tired, they stopped to eat.
After their delicious lunch, Jenny opened her presents—a giant toy giraffe, a coloring book, and a
chess set. The whole family enjoyed Jenny’s birthday party at the beach.
