CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The Student Industrial Work Experience programme is a programme designed for

students with the expectations of students having a real practical experience on the basis of

theories and principles acquired during learning processes at school.

The SIWES programme was designed to bridge the gap between theory and practical. It

was established with the aim of exposing the students to real world experiences as regards work.

Students are expected to acquire technical skills and experiences by means of the SIWES

programme.

Before the SIWES programme was signed into existence, there was a huge loophole as

regards graduates from universities because most of the graduates were not strong or well

equipped when added to work on a real life project. Employers were of the opinion of

introducing the students to real world-like experiences while in school before graduating. Now

SIWES was introduced to provide students with the opportunity of exposure to handle equipment

and machinery in industry to enable them acquire prerequisite practical knowledge and skills.

1.2 HISTORY OF SIWES

SIWES which in full means Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme was an

establishment of the ITF (Industrial Training Fund) in 1973. The scheme became fully in use by

11 institutions of higher learning with about 748 participants. Later on, the scheme began to

expand to different institutes in 32 countries across Nigeria with more than 5000 participants.

This SIWES programme is financed by the Federal government and managed by the ITF.

SIWES is generic because it cuts across more than 60 programmes in the universities, over 40

programmes in the polytechnics and about 10 programmes in the colleges of education. Students

who participate in this training programme include those studying Library and Information

Science, Engineering, Vocational, Technological and related courses in higher institutions of

learning. Other courses involved in SIWES include Agricultural science, Forestry, Industrial

Chemistry, Microbiology, Geology and Mineral Science, Physics and Mineral Science, Plant and

Environmental Biology, Computer Science, Tourism and Hospitality, Business Education,

Industrial Engineering, Enterprise Creation and Management. SIWES duration is 6 months, it is

done after the first year in polytechnics (NDI) and after second/third year in federal universities

depending on the institutions.

The effective management of SIWES has been as a result of the cooperation and well played

roles of the federal government, ITF and Supervising agencies.

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES.

Prior to the establishment of this scheme, there was a rising concern and trend among

industrialists that graduates from higher education institutions lacked appropriate practical

experience for employment. Students who entered Nigerian universities to study science and

technology were not previously trained in the practical aspects of their chosen fields and SIWES

are bridging the gap by

● Providing an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial

skills and experiences in their respective courses of study.

● Prepare students for the industrial work situation they are likely to experience after

graduation.

● Expose students to work methods and techniques of handling equipment and machinery

they may not be available in their institutions.

● Make the transition from school to school easier and enhance students' networks for

better job placement in the future.

● Provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real work situations,

thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.

● Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvement in their entire educational process; thereby
preparing the students for employment in industry and commerce.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF SIWES.

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in Nigeria is a crucial

program designed to provide practical experience to students in higher education institutions.

Here are some of its key significances:

● Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice : SIWES helps students apply theoretical

knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world industrial and professional settings, thus

bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application.

● Enhancing Employability : By gaining hands-on experience, students improve their

skills and competencies, making them more attractive to employers. The practical skills

acquired during SIWES can give graduates a competitive edge in the job market.

● Exposure to Work Environment : The program exposes students to the actual working

conditions, industrial processes, and organizational culture of their chosen fields. This

exposure helps them understand the expectations and demands of their future careers.

● Networking Opportunities : SIWES provides students with opportunities to build

professional networks. They interact with industry professionals, which can lead to

mentorship opportunities, job offers, and valuable career advice.

● Development of Professionalism : Students learn essential workplace skills such as

teamwork, communication, time management, and problem-solving. These skills are

critical for professional development and career success.

● Feedback and Improvement : Through the program, educational institutions receive

feedback from industries about the performance and preparedness of their students.

This feedback can be used to improve curricula and teaching methods to better align with

industry needs.
● National Development : SIWES contributes to the overall development of Nigeria by

producing a skilled and competent workforce. This aligns with national goals of

enhancing industrial productivity and economic growth.

● Compliance with Academic Requirements : For many technical and vocational courses,

participation in SIWES is a mandatory part of the curriculum. Successful completion of

the program is often a requirement for graduation.

Overall, SIWES is a vital component of Nigeria's higher education system, playing a significant

role in preparing students for successful careers and contributing to the nation's industrial and

economic development.

CHAPTER FOUR
IMPLEMENTATIONS OF LESSONS LEARNT
4.1 PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES

During the period of attachment, I was privileged to work at the Frontend Development

department. The frontend development department is/are responsible for translating UI/UX

designs into actual codes that the users can see and interact with. Also they are responsible for

frontend security, authentication and authorizations on every application created.

I was privileged to work on multiple projects ranging from the company’s Learning Management

System (LMS) website, the online streaming platform—CineVerse, a full website for a

construction company amongst others. Also I learnt some data structures and algorithms during

my attachment periods. Some of the tools I worked with while with Sun Dimension Limited as

an IT student includes:

1. HTML

2. CSS

3. JavaScript

4. Github

5. Wordpress

These tools were used by me on a daily basis to contribute massively to the company’s projects

in order to achieve a desired result and a common goal.

4.1.1 A DEEPER DIVE INTO DAILY USED TOOLS.

A brief explanation of what each tool does and work done with the tool can be found in this

section of my report.

1. HTML:

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the universal markup language for the Web.

HTML lets you format text, add graphics, create links, input forms, frames and tables and

then save it all in a text file that any browser can read and display.

2. CSS:

Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language used for specifying the presentation and

styling of a document written in a markup language such as HTML or XML. CSS is a

cornerstone technology of the World Wide Web, alongside HTML and JavaScript.

3. JavaScript:

JavaScript is a client side programming language used to empower and add

functionalities to web applications. Without JavaScript, the website we see and use today

won’t be functional in any way.

4. WordPress:

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that allows you to host and build

websites. On a more technical level, WordPress is a content management system (CMS)

written in PHP that uses a MySQL database.

WordPress contains plugin architecture and a template system, so you can customize any

website to fit your business, blog, portfolio, or online store. WordPress was our main

building tool at Sun Dimension Limited because it is flexible and dynamic.

5. Github:

GitHub is a platform for hosting and sharing code, primarily using the Git version control

system. It allows developers to collaborate on projects, track changes to their codebase,

and manage different versions of their software. GitHub provides features such as issue

tracking, pull requests, and project management tools, making it popular among

developers for both open-source and private projects.

4.2 PROJECTS I WORKED ON DURING MY INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

4.2.1 CINEVERSE
CineVerse Entertainment Platform was a project inspired by Netflix and AppleTV applications.

CineVerse is a web based streaming platform with similar abilities to Netflix and AppleTV. With

CineVerse, you can watch movies and TV shows on any device connected to the internet, like

your phone, laptop, or smart TV. CineVerse was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Tools used in CineVerse:

CineVerse which is a video streaming website was built with the following tools:

1. HyperText Markup Language: Every website out there has a core programming language

used in building and setting things up. I used HTML to build the entire structure of the

website.

2. Cascading Style Sheets: Essentially, CSS acts as the stylistic blueprint for a website. It

dictates visual elements like font styles, color schemes, margins, and overall layout. This

separation of concerns allows for cleaner code and easier website maintenance. Content

can be updated or modified without affecting the visual design governed by the CSS

stylesheet. This was what I used to style every page, each page having its unique

stylesheet file.

3. JavaScript: I incorporated minimal JavaScript by adding three script files to catch errors

and load my pages properly. The last script was to create an accordion section on the

landing page to make user interaction lively.

4. GitHub: I used github to deploy and launch the full site and all the pages and additional

assets.

Problems solved by CineVerse:

CineVerse was built in order to address several critical issues in the current market. My design

solves the problem of high subscription costs by offering a more affordable pricing model,

making premium streaming services accessible to a broader audience. Additionally, the user

interface is simplified for improved navigation and user experience, catering to all age groups,

including the elderly and less tech-savvy individuals. Moreover, my design emphasizes data

efficiency, reducing bandwidth consumption, and ensuring smooth streaming even in areas with

limited internet connectivity. This approach not only enhances user satisfaction but also broadens

the user base, making high-quality streaming services more inclusive and widely available.
4.2.2 SUN ACADEMY TUTOR LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application or platform designed to

manage, deliver, and track educational courses, training programs, or learning and development

programs. Sun Academy Tutor was built on WordPress and incorporated its Tutor LMS. A

WordPress-based LMS utilizes the WordPress platform along with specialized plugins to provide

LMS functionalities. So I built the several pages using the appropriate plug-ins and then

uploaded the provided course content and created quizzes for each respective lesson and course.

2. How to use the elementor plugin on WordPress.

3. How to incorporate HTML, CSS and JavaScript into a WordPress hosted site.
CHAPTER FIVE

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 CONCLUSION

My Industrial Training at Sun Dimension was a fun, bumpy ride. No doubt, I gained a lot of

experiences which by default won’t be possible by theories alone. My training has shown me the

practicality of all the courses I have taken so far as an undergraduate in the department of

computer science. I have also improved in communication wise, teamwork and also in public

addressing. I was able to set amazing reachable goals for myself and thanks to this SIWES

programme. SIWES as a course has truly exposed me to the challenges faced in a growing I.T

world that is dependent on computers.

5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS.

I urge the Federal Government to take the SIWES program more seriously especially for I.T

students and Applied Sciences because the world is drifting towards I.T. The Government should

ensure a proper supervision of SIWES students so that the purpose of the program will be

archived. The Federal Government should also make adequate provision in the annual budget for

proper funding of SIWES in view of the potential of the program to contribute to enhancing the

quality of the pool I.T skills available to the country. A comprehensive and detailed directory of

who accepts students for SIWES is urgently required to facilitate placement for SIWES students

in industry. The ITF also should ensure that the payment of the student allowance is paid on time

in order to keep the SIWES students zealous and motivated.

I recommend that the Nigerian educational system should be reviewed as what is taught in the

classroom totally contradicts with what is needed in the actual work place.
