2. Make the connections according to circuit diagram. While making connections ensure
terminal of voltmeter and ammeter are joined towards the +ve(positive) terminal of the battery
(see Arrangement diagram).
3. Note the least count and measure the zero error of ammeter and voltmeter.
4. Close key K and adjust the sliding contact of rheostat such that a small current passes througn
the resistance coil. Note V & I.
5. Further note the values of the of Vand I by shifting the sliding contact of Rheostat in small steps.
6. Take atleast 6 sets of readings of voltmeter and ammeter and record them in table.
7. Length of the wire =

OBSERVATIONS
1. Least count of ammeter Ampere (A)
2. Zero error in ammeter A

3. Least count in voltmeter Volt (V)

4. Zero error in voltmeter
5. Zero error correction in ammeter = A

CALCULATIONS
1. Find the ratio of V and Lfer each set of
observations.
2. Plot a graph between potential difference Vand current I taking Valong X-axis and I along Y-axis.
The graph willbe a straight line as shown in the adjacent figure.
3. Resistance per unit length of given wire ohm m'

PRECAUTIONS
A low resistance rheostat should be used.
2. Ammeter should be connected in series.
Voltmeter should be connected in parallel.
4. The connections should be neat, clean and tight.
5. Clean the ends of connecting wires with sand paper.
6. Thick copper wires should be used for the connections.
SOURCES OF ERROR
Thick connecting wire should be used, because the resistance of the connecting wires may not be
negigible.
The connection may be loose.
3. Rheostat may have high resistance.

VIVA VOCEI
1. What is a conductor?
Ans. An object which allows current toflow through it is called a conductor.
2. What isa battery?
Ans. A combination of cells in series is called a battery.
3. What is meant by electric resistance' of a conductor?
Ans, The ratio of potential difference to the current flowing through that conductor, is called 'electric
resistance' of the conductor.
