Hummarabi code
Hummarabi code
assess hammurabi's code as the whether it is just or unjust sets of laws and whether or not it
accomplishes its stated purpose.
Hummarabi’s code was enforced a lot like how laws are enforced today. The Hummarabi
code consists of 282 rules for different interactions with fines and punishments, which is very
similar to law enforcement today. Having written laws are very important as well as having fair
laws. I will be discussing the importance of written laws and assessing how just or unjust the
hammurabi code was.
The purpose for writing down laws can be perceived or thought up in multiple ways. It
helps people have a visual and a written reminder. It also makes it more real in a way like it's set
in stone and can’t be taken away or ignored. It also is good to write down the laws so it can be
brought up when the rules aren’t followed so people can’t lie their way out of a crime or try to
twist the wording to save themselves from receiving a fine or punishment.
The Hummarabi code was pretty just. It contained most of the laws that we still follow
today. Their laws were a guideline for their judges. Their laws were basically set up like this: If
someone does this then that will happen. They have laws for Equality, impartiality, damages,
retribution, divorce and basically everything we have which made it very modern. The different
laws all served their purpose and had pretty fair punishments for the things that a person does.
But at times it was very he said she said like in murder trials where if someone accuses
someone else of murder but can’t prove it they get put to death. They base it off of trust which
can’t always be trusted since we are human so it wasn’t a very fair way to handle someone's
life.
The Hummarabi code could also be unjust in different ways. They handled some of the
smaller laws very harshly. They resorted to violence for a lot of things instead of being a little
more lenient with punishments. For example they would cut your tongue for insulting others,
they would cut your hands off for giving a bad haircut, getting set on fire for looking at property
that wasn’t your own, and when a woman cheated she would get tired together with her side
piece and they would drown together. These are just little examples of how cruel they could be
for smaller instances. They believed in the eye for an eye punishment but it got taken very far.
The Hummarabi code can vary being just and unjust but it was very advanced for their time.
Having written laws is very good and being fair helps build a better society. The hammurabi
code was pretty good for the time it came from and its really advanced for their time.
