Project Money
Project Money
Objective: Help kids understand what money is and why it’s used.
Activity: Show various types of money (coins, bills, and digital currency if relevant) and
explain how it’s used to buy goods and services.
• Discussion Questions:
• What is money used for?
• How do you earn money?
• Why do people save money?
2. Different Coins and Bills.
Activity: Use play money or real coins/bills and have kids sort them by denomination.
3. Timeline of money
Students will organize themselves in teams to make the presentation about the history of
money, starting from barter, going through the important stages until reaching the use of
current money. They will use the information obtained in class, in their books and personal
research at home. Using vocabulary and visual support. You will be shown a table of rubrics.
4. Needs vs. Wants. Every 4 weeks
Objective: Help kids understand the difference between needs (essentials) and wants
(nice-to-haves).
Each 4 weeks, students will have the opportunity to make the decision to buy products (of
school utensils or other trifles) and thus, understand buying out of necessity or by wanting to
buy.
5. Earning Money All the time
Objective: Explain how people earn money and the importance of working.
Activity: Create a “job chart” where kids earn pretend money for completing tasks (e.g.,
cleaning, helping classmates).
The kids can earn money doing tasks: working in class, participating, cleaning up, helping
others,…
6. Making Choices with Money All the time
Activity: Set up a list of different rewards or activities with items at various prices, and let kids
choose what they want to “buy” with a set amount of play money. These activities can be
during all project.
Final activity: Auction
To finish the project, an auction of various items will be held, where they can bid to
obtain the item they wish to acquire or work together and join the money to be
able to reach the amount or donate the money to those who need it.
