Methods and Types of Communication

1. What is Communication?
Communication is the process of exchanging or passing of information ideas or
thoughts from one person to the other in a meaningful way.

2. What is the Significance of Communication?


Good Communication helps in:
• Understanding people better.
• clarity of thoughts and expressions
• It also educates people.
• Brings people together.
• Bridges gap between individuals and groups.

3. What are the different methods of communication?


Communication can be done through various methods are listed below:
i. Face to Face communication.( Interpersonal communication.)
ii. Letters / Memos / Emails.
iii. Posters / Infographs/ Charts
iv. Meetings / Seminars
v. Print /Analogue/ Digital Media

4. What are the different of types of communications?


The different types of communications are:
• Verbal form that is communicating orally.
• Non-verbal form that is communicating using body language gestures
tone.
• Written form is communication using handwritten or printed information
• visual form communicating via pictures logos posters maps.

5. What are the various elements of communication?


The various elements of Communication are:
i. sender or messenger : sender is a person who wants to share their
ideas of feelings in the form of a message.
ii. Ideas/message: The ideas to be shared from the message.
iii. Encoding: It is the process of converting the ideas into message form
by using words, symbols, voice, tone or gestures.
iv. Communication medium/channel: This refers to the carrier or medium
which transfers the messages. In case of verbal messages, air doing a
job, in case of email, internet is doing job.

v. A receiver or recipient : Receiver is the person for whom the message


is intended and who received the message.
vi. Decoding: It is the processing to interpret the received message to get
to the idea shared by the sender.
vii. Feedback: It is a cue by the receiver which tells the sender that the
message has been understood or not. The purpose of communication
is complete only when the receiver has understood the message.

6. What is Verbal Communication?


Verbal Communication is a communication that can take place in the form of face to
face, Small groups, Meetings, Public address or digital address.

7. What are the advantages of verbal communication?

• Straight forward to express the feeling.


• The communication is mostly interactive and interpersonal.
• It is speedy form of communication.
• You get instant feedback as the speaker can see or get the feedback of
audience.
• Helps in maintaining relationships as verbal communication along with effective
non-verbal communication Makes professional and personal bonds.

8. What are the disadvantages of verbal communication?

• Not possible to communicate people in different setup.


• It requires proximity.
• It often feels incomplete to keep records.
• Not possible to represent things officially, legally, that requires recorded
information.
• It is not complete form of communication.
• There are emotional barriers.

9. What is non-verbal communication?

Non-verbal communication is the process of sending and receiving messages without using
spoken words or written words. Instead, it is the use of body language, facial expressions,
hand movements, gestures and general behaviour to send our message.
example Smile, a wink or a wave.

10. What are the advantages of Non-verbal Communication?

• Very easy to demonstrate.


• Very useful for conveying message when there is too much of noise.
• No language barriers.
• Very fast.

11. What are the disadvantages of Non-verbal Communication?


• Not Suitable for lengthy messages.
• An incomplete form of communication.
• Chances of misinterpretation.
• Regional and cultural differences.

12. What is Visual Communication?


Visual communication is a communication that takes place through posters, Charts,
signboards and Infographs etc.

13. What are the advantages Visual communication?

• It reinforces other forms of communications.


• It can explain things in ways which are not possible through words.
• In clears the barrier of qualification or language.

14. What are the disadvantages of Visual communication?

• Comparatively expensive.
• Requires specialised storing.
• Time consuming.
• Not a complete form of communication.

15. What is Written Communication?


The written is a communication that takes place in the form of letters, emails, articles,
memos, fax reports and other documents.

16. What are the advantages written communication?

• Permanent storage.
• Stands a legal holding.
• It facilitates reuse.
• Mass circulation possible
• Suitable for lengthy messages/ information.
• It conveys sincerity.
• Identical copies can be produced.

17. What are the disadvantages written communication?


• Costly.
• Time consuming.
• A barrier of qualifications/languages.
• Cost on storage.
