Welcome
Message
We are delighted to welcome all delegates, speakers, and special guests to the fourth ASEAN
Australia Young Leaders Forum (AAYLF). This Forum serves as a unique platform to
strengthen ASEAN-Australia relations by fostering meaningful connections among young
leaders and deepening their understanding of our shared regional interests.

This year holds special significance as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN-
Australia dialogue partnership. Over the past five decades, our region has undergone
tremendous changes, bringing both new opportunities and challenges. Now, more than ever,
fostering people-to-people connections and cultivating innovative leadership is essential for
navigating this evolving landscape.

The ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership (AASYP) is proud to deliver this Forum in
collaboration with our partners and sponsors. As a youth-led initiative, AASYP is committed to
building knowledge, inspiring engagement, and creating connections among ASEAN and
Australian youth. Together, we envision a future shaped by influential leaders equipped with
the skills, knowledge, and networks to address the most pressing regional challenges.

To the AASYP team - thank you for your dedication, creativity, and tireless effort in bringing this
Forum to life. It is truly inspiring to see the hard work, ideas, and collaboration that made this
event possible. We hope this experience will be as rewarding for you as it will be for our
delegates.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners for their invaluable support, with special
thanks to the Australia-ASEAN Council, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade for their unwavering commitment to AASYP and the Forum. We are grateful to the
Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City, Study Melbourne Hub Ho Chi Minh City,
and RMIT University Vietnam for championing youth leadership in the region. A heartfelt
thank you to ABROADER, Dear Our Community, and VNG Corporation for their generous
contributions of expertise, support, and resources. Special appreciation also goes to
Haileybury College and the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Ho Chi Minh
City for providing opportunities for delegates to attend the Forum. Finally, thank you to the
speakers and their organisations for dedicating your time and expertise to this event—we are
eager to learn from you.

The ASEAN Australia Young Leaders Forum is nothing without our incredible delegates. As a
mix of young people from all across our region, diverse in age, profession, background, and
much more, we know you will bring a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to this event.
Through this year's theme of InnovASEAN: Shaping Tomorrow’s Tech Leaders, we hope you
will come together to design a stronger, more interconnected future for ASEAN and Australia
and form lasting friendships over these three days as a first step towards getting there.

Dear Delegates,

Congratulations on being selected as the delegates of ASEAN-Australia Young Leaders Forum 2024. What a
wonderful and timely opportunity for you to come together in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

2024 marks a significant year for ASEAN and Australia, as we celebrate 50 years since Australia became ASEAN’s first
Dialogue Partner. It was back in 1974 that Australia’s then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam said that “ASEAN is
unquestionably the most important, the most relevant of arrangements in our region.” This remains as true now as it
was fifty years ago, and I’m pleased we’ve continued to expand on the breadth and depth of our ASEAN-Australia
Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in our 50th anniversary year. But while we have reflected on all we have done
together across half a century of partnership, the ASEAN-Australia partnership is forward facing.

It’s worth noting that the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership was established by a group of young
Australian New Colombo Plan scholars, who seized on the opportunity to build Australia’s connections with the
region. It’s a clear example of how the next generation is driving the future of our relationship.

This year's theme of the ASEAN-Australia Young Leaders Forum 2024, InnovASEAN: Shaping Tomorrow’s Tech
Leaders, underscores the importance of engaging youth on future challenges and opportunities – including in the
digital and technology agendas. Australia has been pleased to work closely with ASEAN in these fields, including
through our Aus4ASEAN Digital Transformation and Future Skills Initiative, and our support for the conclusion of the
ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement.

ASEAN is at the centre of our dynamic region, and you – as the next generation – are the custodians of the future of
the ASEAN-Australia relationship. I am sure the discussions and connections you make will at this Young Leaders
Forum will foster a better understanding between Southeast Asia and Australia. In this way, you are contributing to
our shared efforts to promote a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region. I encourage you to stay in touch with one
another, fostering the most important aspect of the ASEAN-Australia relationship: the people-to-people links.

The Australian Government is pleased to support the ASEAN-Australia Young Leaders Forum, including through the
newly established ASEAN-Australia Centre and Australian Consul-General in Ho Chi Minh City.

I would like to reiterate my thanks to the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership for their outstanding work in
organising this forum. We recognise the important role initiatives - such as the ASEAN-Australia Young Leaders
Forum – play in strengthening connections between young leaders across the region. Regional and multilateral
forums safeguard our capacity to engage constructively and overcome the challenges together. Because, after all,
we are stronger when we work together.

I wish you all the best for the future, a future where you will play an important role in advancing ASEAN-Australian
relations: a partnership for the future.

Yours sincerely,
Tiffany McDonald
