SPECIALIZED 413B
PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

Module 6: Shear Design of Prestressed Concrete Members

I. Course Objectives:

• The students are expected to familiarize the formula’s, principles, concepts and code
provisions used in shear strength in prestressed concrete members.
• To educate the students about the procedure of the design of transverse reinforcement in
accordance to the NSCP 2015 for prestressed member.

II. Course Outline:

1.1 Shear Strength in Prestressed Concrete Beam

1.1.1 Introduction
1.1.2 Code Requirements
1.1.3 Steps in the Design of Transverse Reinforcement

1.2 Sample Problems

III. Learning Content

1.1 SHEAR STRENGTH IN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM

1.1.1 Introduction

The objective of today’s reinforced concrete designer is to produce ductile members that provide
warning of impending failure. To achieve this goal, the code provides design shear values that have
larger safety factors against shear failures than do those provided for bending failures.

The failures of reinforced concrete beams in shear are quite different from their failures in
bending. Shear failures occur suddenly with little or no advance warning. Therefore, beams are
designed to fail in bending under loads that are appreciably smaller than those that would cause shear
failures. As a result, those members will fail ductile. They may crack and sag a great deal if overloaded,
but they will not fall apart, as they might if shear failures were possible.

1.1.2 Code Requirements

409.4.3.1
For beams built integrally with supports, 𝑽𝒖 at the support shall be permitted to be calculated at the face
of support.

409.4.3.2
Sections between the face of support and a critical section located 𝒅𝒑 from the face of support for
prestressed beams shall be permitted to be designed for 𝑽𝒖 at that critical section.

note: 𝒅𝒑 > 𝟎. 𝟖𝟎𝒉

422.5.1.1
Nominal one-way shear strength at a section, 𝑽𝒏, shall be calculated by:

𝑽𝒏 = 𝑽𝒄 + 𝑽𝒔

Where:
𝑽𝒄 = Nominal Shear Strength of Concrete
𝑽𝒔 = Nominal Shear Strength of the Shear Reinforcement

The amount of shear 𝑽𝒄 that can be carried by the concrete at ultimate is at least equal to the amount
of shear that would cause diagonal cracking. The amount of shear provided by the reinforcement 𝑽𝒔 is
calculated using truss analogy with 𝟒𝟓𝐨 inclination of the diagonal members.
