Socket 1150 / Socket LGA1150 / Socket H3

RELATED LINKS
Socket 1150, also known as LGA1150 and H3, is a Land Grid Array socket with 1150 land contacts, compatible with forth
and fifth generation Core desktop processors, as well as with Xeon E3 v3 and v4 server processors. The LGA1150 was
introduced in June 2013 and it succeeded socket 1155, which was utilized by "Sandy Bridge" and "Ivy Bridge" generations Socket 1150 benchmarks
of CPUs. The LGA1150 supports Haswell- and Broadwell-based microprocessors, having 2 or 4 CPU cores, up to 8 MB of L3
cache, integrated graphics, dual-channel memory controller, DMI 2.0 and PCI-Express 3.0 interfaces. The socket works Socket 1151
with DDR3 RAM with data rates up to 1600 MHz. It does not support DDR4 memory. The LGA1150 is compatible with Intel Socket 1155
Socket 1156
B85, H81, H87, Q85, Q87, Z87, H97 and Z97 desktop chipsets, along with Intel C226 server chipset. Please note that only
Socket 1366
9-series chipsets, H97 and Z97, support Broadwell i5-5xxx and i7-5xxx unlocked CPUs.
All CPU sockets
In August 2015, Intel introduced a new desktop platform for Skylake microprocessors. That platform uses 100 series
chipsets and socket 1151, and it is not compatible with Haswell and Broadwell CPUs. Also, Skylake processors do not fit Link to this page
into socket 1150.

The socket H3 has 1150 land contacts arranged as a grid 40 x 40. The grid has 24 x 16 section de-populated in the center,
and 66 land contacts are depopulated mostly from the socket corners and edges. Visually, the contacts look like two L-
-53%
shaped sections, opposing each other. Like sockets 1155 and 1156, the LGA1150 uses Independent Loading Mechanism
(ILM) to keep the processor in place, and to apply equal force to all socket contacts. The design of the ILM for socket H3 is
similar to older LGA1155 and LGA1156 designs.

Supported processors
All processors, listed below, will physically fit into the socket 1150, although not all of them may be supported. For that
reason, before buying a new CPU please always make sure that the CPU is compatible with your motherboard.

There are no CPUs from other manufacturers compatible with the socket 1150.

Compatible sockets
There are no sockets, compatible with the LGA1150. Notably, LGA1155 processors will not fit into socket 1150, and vice
versa. However, fan/heatsinks, designed for sockets 1155 and 1156, can be used with the LGA1150.

Compatible package types

1150-land Flip-Chip Land Grid Array (FC-LGA) package. LGA1155 package has the same size as the LGA1150, but it won't
fit into the socket 1150.

Upgrading socket 1150 motherboards

For upgrade information on ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, ECS, EVGA, Foxconn, Gigabyte, Intel, Jetway, MSI, PC Chips and
ZOTAC motherboards please see CPU-Upgrade CPU support database. If you can't find your motherboard on the cpu-
upgrade website then use CPU-Z or similar program to determine your motherboard's chipset type, and then look for CPU
upgrade information for that chipset. CPU support data for Intel chipsets can be found on CPU-Upgrade.com in the Intel
chipsets section, or on Intel's website.

General CPU upgrade recommendations

Intel offers wide range of LGA1150 compatible microprocessors, priced from about $40 to $300 and even higher. Based on
price and features, the CPUs are broken down into five families. Low cost (sub $100) processors are available under
Celeron and Pentium brands. Mid-range Core i3 and i5 microprocessors are priced from $100 to $250. The top
performance CPUs are branded Core i7. Higher price buys you more features, and, consequentially, better performance:

Core i7 processors have the best overall and single-threaded performance from all desktop products, compatible with
the socket H3. These chips have 4 CPU cores, and they can run 4 extra threads (8 in total) with the help of
HyperThreading technology. Large shared L3 cache also helps to boost performance, even in lightly-threaded
applications. Core i7s are also a good upgrade choice if you need certain advanced features, like hardware accelerated
AES encryption/decryption or VT-d virtualization. The Core i7 GPUs are usually clocked higher than GPUs on less
expensive chips. The main drawback of Core i7s is the price, which starts at about $300 for new boxed models.
Core i5 microprocessors are a good alternative to Core i7s when the ultimate multi-threaded performance is not
needed. The i5 CPUs have slightly lower clock rates, smaller L3 cache, and they lack Hyper-Threading technology.
Somewhat reduced performance due to these limitations is compensated by lower price, which starts at $200 for boxed
processors.
Core i3 processors have even fewer features than their Core i5 counterparts. The number of cores on i3s is slashed in
half. They also have smaller last level cache and they lack Turbo Boost technology. On the other hand, Hyper-Threading
technology is enabled on these chips, and they can still execute 4 simultaneous threads when needed. The 3rd and 4th
threads will run with much reduced performance, which is why Core i3 processors have much slower multi-threading
performance than Core i5s and i7s. Prices of new Core i3 microprocessors range from $115 to $150.
Celeron and Pentium CPUs are priced below $100, and have even fewer features. They lack Hyper-Threading
technology. They do not support AES, AVX and AVX2 instructions, used to accelerate certain types of data processing,
encryption and decryption. Their clock rates tend to be lower than clock rates of Core-branded chips. Celeron and
Pentium processors perform just fine for simple home and business applications, like e-mail readers, documentation
writers, web browsers, image editors, etc. However, these budget microprocessors are not recommended if you intend
to run on periodic bases a heavily multi-threaded task or many CPU-intensive tasks. Depending on model, Celeron chips
are priced from $40 to $60, and prices of Pentiums range from $60 to $100.
