ART OF SIKKIM

Sikkim is renowned for its d azzling and


appealing b eauty. The charm of this
state is ev er enticing and no one can
abstain from its allure. In fact, Sikkim
is resp lend ent with not only its natural
beauty b ut with its art and craft too.
The cultural richness of Sikkim is
visib le in its q uality hand icrafts.
CARPET WEAVING

women of the Bhutia c ommunity

of Sik k im. Initially, these p ainting s wer e
the only med ium to p r eac h the hig hest
id eals of Bud d hism. 'Thang k as' ar e usually
mad e on c otton c anvas with a fr ame of

HANDICRAFTS
The native Sik k imese weaves var ious
str ik ing d esig ns and p atter ns. They
weave woolen b lank ets, b ag s, shawls
and jac k ets with the r eflec tion of
their master y over the ar t. The
'thank as' (tr ad itional tap estr y),
leather wor k s, d olls, multic olor ed
ap p liq ue wor k , b atik s, a fine
c ollec tion of d olls and a r ang e of
fashionab le g ar ments ar e the
ad d itional sp ec ialties of Sik k im. To
d evelop and p r omote suc h ind ustr ies,
the g over nment has estab lished an
institute of c ottag e ind ustr ies. The
loc al hand ic r afts ar e availab le her e on
sale.
CHOKTSE TABLE
Choktse is a kind of fold ab le tab le and has
become a special product of Sikkim. Choktse
Tables are renowned here as well as outside
India. These tables are made in different
designs and dimensions.
