I. Researching

Chief Ways to do Research

1. Field Research

Field Research can be carried out in three ways:

(1) Observing

①Planning the visit

To ensure that your observational visits are fruitful, you should plan

carefully. First, you should try to get access to the place you want to visit. If it

is a public place, say a new municipal art gallery, a farmers market, or the

Pudong district in Shanghai, you probably will have easy access to it. If the

place is private, such as someone S home, a nightclub or a dress shop owned

by an individual, you have to arrange your Visit by calling ahead to gain

permission.
②Observing and note-taking

You can study the scene from a stationary middle position (front of the

art gallery) and then try to move around it. Even if you are somewhat familiar

with the place, you should pretend that you are looking at it for the first time

with a fresh eye.

Perspectives

Setting

While observing, pay particular attention to the setting or the physical

environment and try to catch sensory details related to sight (color, shape,

size), sound, smell, taste, and touch.

People

Their activities, movements, behavior, appearance, dress, and (overheard)

speech, and anything interesting, unusual, and surprising.

Reactions

Your own feeling and thoughts while observing the subject are an important

part of the process too. They will help you organize and asses the findings and

decide how to use them later.

Note-taking

You can take notes in words, phrases, or sentences. You can draw diagrams

or sketches (if they help you see and understand the place) and use quotation

marks around any striking speech.

③Writing up the notes

Immediately after your observational visit, find a quiet place to go over

and add to your notes, summarize and reflect upon the whole experience:

What are the main impressions? What is the most revealing of the findings?

Are there any patterns? What are the most vivid details? Sometimes, you may

find it necessary to do a follow-up visit to get additional information.
(2) Interviewing

Interviewing is a useful research method which can generate a lot of

interesting data for your paper. Interviewing also involves at least the

following two aspects: planning and writing up the notes.

① Planning the interview

First, you need to decide whom to interview.

Second. you should explain briefly but clearly why you need the interview,

how important this interview is to you, ask for his or her cooperation, and

arrange for a time which is convenient for both the subject and yourself.

Third, you should be prepared with a number of questions so that your

interview will produce valuable information and you will not sit there

chitchatting and wasting everybody's time.

Closed and open questions

There are two basic types of questions: closed and open. Closed

questions request specific information and direct answers. Open questions, on

the other hand, give the subject range and flexibility.

② Writing up the notes

(3) Using questionnaires

A questionnaire is a list of questions (on a subject) designed to collect

responses that can be analyzed for useful information. Using questionnaires as

a research method has several advantages over observing and interviewing: it

allows you to sample the attitudes or knowledge of much larger number of

people ( virtually as many people as you want to reach); it is economic,

efficient, and anonymous (anonymity can be crucial if you want to collect

responses considered sensitive or personal)

① Choosing a Focus

② Developing the questionnaires

③ Administering the questionnaires

④ Summing up the Results

2. Library Research

While there are many things to discuss in connection with library

research, we will focus on:

How to locate sources and materials available in a typical library

What kind of strategy to follow while conducting library research

How to keep track of your research

(1) Library Sources and Materials

① General References

② Indexes, Catalogues, and Abstracts

③ Bibliographies

④ Electronic and Online Sources

Step IV (2) Taking notes

3. Internet Research
Step V Summary

Sum up the main idea of the passage and the important points.
