P37 More Angular Momentum Period _____ Name ______________________________

1. Two objects, X and Y, experience external net torques that vary over a period of 5 seconds. Object
X has a moment of inertia I0, and Object Y has a moment of inertia 2I0. The average value of the
magnitude of the external net torque exerted on Object X from time t = 0 to t = 5s is X. Similarly,
the average value for Object Y is Y. The magnitudes of the angular momenta L of Objects X and Y z
versus t are shown in the graph. Which of the following expressions correctly relates X to Y ?

(A) Y = 4X (C) 2Y = X t za

(B) Y = 2X (D) 4Y = X

2. Jean stands at the exact center of a large spinning frictionless uniform disk of mass M and radius R with moment of inertia
I = ½MR2. As she walks from the center to the edge of the disk, the angular speed of the disk is quartered. Which of the
following statements is true?

(A) Jean’s mass is less than the mass of the disk.

(B) Jean’s mass is equal to the mass of the disk.

O
(C) Jean’s mass is between the mass of the disk and twice the mass of the disk.
(D) Jean’s mass is more than twice the mass of the disk.

3. A uniform rod of mass, M1 and length, L is fixed on one end, and the other is free to rotate
with respect to point C on a frictionless horizontal table. The angular velocity of the rod is ω
and initially stays unchanged. The rod strikes a stationary sphere of mass, M 2 with the free
end. After the collision, the rod stops and the sphere moves to the right with a velocity, v.
The moment of inertia of the rod with respect to point C is I = ML2. Present all answers in
terms of: M1, M2, L, and ω.

(A) Determine the velocity of the sphere, v after the collision by using the conservation of angular momentum. Present
all answers in terms of: M1, M2, L, and ω.

Lets

i
(B) Determine the linear momentum of the center of mass of the rod just before the collision.

I
(C) Determine the linear momentum of the sphere after the collision.

I L
(D) Is the linear momentum of the system of two objects conserved during the collision? Explain.

No bc hinge provides external force

(E) Is the angular momentum of the system of two objects conserved? Explain.

Yes bc hinge is axis, so has no angular momentum

4. A uniform bar, of mass M, with seven evenly spaced holes is held by sliding the bar over a
w w I v
horizontal peg through one of the seven holes. The peg passes through hole C, and a cylinder
hangs from a hook placed through hole B as shown above. The mass of the bar is equal to
the mass of the cylinder, and the location of the center of mass of the bar is at the center of
hole D. In this configuration, the bar-cylinder system remains motionless but is free to rotate
around the peg in hole C. Frictional forces acting on the bar are negligible.

(A) Two additional cylinders, identical to the one shown, can each be hung on the bar by hooks from any of the open holes so
that the bar will still be in rotational equilibrium when all three cylinders are hanging from it. From which two holes
should the two cylinders be hung? Briefly explain your reasoning.

A and E bc the axis is shifted so mapping out, cylinders at A, B, and E balance it out

The cylinder is moved to hang from hole A as shown in Case 1 above. The bar is released, and its
resulting angular acceleration is recorded. Then the cylinder is moved to hang from hole E, as
shown in Case 2 above. Again, the bar is released, and its resulting angular acceleration is
recorded.

(B) Is the magnitude of the initial angular acceleration of the bar-cylinder system in Case 1 larger
than, smaller than, or equal to the magnitude of the initial angular acceleration of the bar-
cylinder system in Case 2? In a clear, coherent, paragraph-length response, explain your
reasoning.

Case 2 has angular momentum of both bar and weight while Case 1 has weight countering bar, so Case 2 is larger

In a new scenario, a different uniform bar is held by a horizontal peg as shown above. The bar is initially motionless
but is free to rotate around the peg with negligible friction. A ball of clay is dropped onto the bar in the
position shown. The clay collides with and sticks to the bar.

(C) During this collision, is the linear momentum of the clay-bar system constant? Justify your
answer.

No because fore of support acting on it

(D) During this collision, is the angular momentum of the bar about an axis through the center of the bar constant? Justify
your answer.

Momentum of bar not constant because clay makes bar turn
