The Discussion of Communicative Language Teaching Approach in Language Classrooms

When it comes to the teaching and learning process a variety of strategies had been

developed, trying to adjust to the students’ needs when it comes to learning a foreign

language, giving as a result the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach.

Many teachers had been trying to implement CLT but they do not know how to do it

correctly, they take CLT just as a tool or a variety of activities. As the main intention for the

creation of the approach to a language CLT was created with the intention of be a bridge to

learn and teach how to communicate in another language, it went beyond of the insufficient

way of teaching of just know how the language works and learn the grammar and structures

of a language.

Beyond the teaching of the linguistic as the center of a language learning, the reading

proposes the integration of culture as a bridge to communication in the classroom, to put

students as the center of the class rather than the teacher being the only who can interact, with

students interacting with each other and teachers only guiding process will be most beneficial

for them.

Some of the activities that the reading proposes are role play, presentation and

interaction situations, this all guides to communicative situations, most of them using the

context and interests of students that will call their attention and motivate them to interact.

Every process should adapt to and change according the students’ goals, focusing in one skill

and changing to another if it is necessary to guide their process

However, there are some disadvantages. The risk of mistakes, also the CLT approach

could not be useful or difficult for students from cultures where traditional grammar-based

methods are prevalent. The pressure for getting better test results can also be a difficulty.
The CLT approach should be taking more into account when it comes for language

teaching and learning, it allows the student to practice the foreign language in a didactic way,

getting out of the oldest methods of only using grammar and knowing the structure of a

language. By using CLT, students will be putting in practice their knowledge and connecting

it with their daily lives.

Despite there are some disadvantages there is much more to win and improve when it

is necessary, rather than only stay in the comfort zone by just staying with the old methods,

the responsibility of a good implementation of CLT falls into the hands of teachers, we need

to keep evolving and searching for the best way possible of guiding and shaping the learning

process of a foreign language.
