Critical Appreciation of Remembrance

-by William Shakespeare

Introduction - 'When to the session of sweet silent thought' also known as Remembrance is
the 30th sonnet written by William Shakespeare. This sonnet was also published along with
other sonnets in 1609. Shakespeare's continuation of same style of writing is clearly evident
in this sonnet too.

Central Idea - Poem 'Remembrance' focuses on pondering over lost things in past and
reinvigorate those woes and moan over then. Poet enumerates four types of losses he has
faced in life which makes him sad even today when he thinks about them again. Such woes
force him to wail again. Poet becomes extremely sorrowful by his past losses like past's
unachieved things, loss of dear friends, lost love and vanished sights. Then poet gets over
from such state by remembering about his 'dear friend' and his 'all losses are recovered and
sorrows end'.

Themes
 Disappointment with past - It is common human nature that we are often
disappointed with one or other things in our past and we often start to feel sorry or
sad for those things. Poet is also in such state where he is drawn in extreme state of
sorrow thinking about his past losses. He was re-living his past woes again and
weeping, wailing or moaning over them as it was happening first time.
 Nostalgia - Nostalgia is being in reflective mood when person thinks about past
incident and memories. Poet also enters in such state. He becomes totally nostalgic
about his past losses.
 Friendship and Hope - Friendship is a strong theme of sonnets of Shakespeare. His
secret young dear friend is again an important subject matter in this sonnet. This
friend of his becomes his hope and saviour whose sweet thoughts bring out poet out
of gloominess and it seems like his all losses recovered.

Figure of Speech

 Alliteration - 'Sessions of sweet silent thought' has alliteration as there is repetition

of consonant sound /s/. Again in 'And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste'
there is repetition of consonant sound /w/
 Consonance - 'death's dateless' has consonance as after repetition of consonant
sound /d/ there is change of vowels in both words. There is consonance in 'When to
the sessions of sweet silent thought' also as there is clear consonant sound
repetition /t/.
 Enjambment - 'When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past'
 Assonance - 'woe to woe tell o'er' and 'fore-bemoaned moan' have repetition of
vowel sound /o/.

Diction - Shakespeare's diction has been simple and easy to understand. He has used
layman language. In this poem there is a special feature of 'financial terminology' to show
the past losses of the poet. He has used words like 'new pay', 'not paid' and 'losses restored'
which reflects Shakespeare's experiment with diction.

Structure and Rhyme Scheme - Poem has classical Shakespearean structure of three
quatrains and a couplet. It has rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
