End-Term Examination Autumn 2023-24
Duration: 3h Marks: 100
[1] The uniform links AB and BC each weigh 10 N and the cylinder weighs 100 N. Draw the free-body
diagram of the lift and determine the horizontal force P required to hold the mechanism at 𝜃 = 45°
using the principle of virtual work. The spring has an unstretched length of 100 mm.
[15]
[2] A freight elevator, including its load, has a mass of 1000 kg. It is prevented from rotating due to
the track and wheels mounted along its sides. Draw the free-body diagram of the lift. If the motor
M develops a constant tension 𝑇 = 4 kN in its attached cable, determine the velocity of the elevator
when it has moved upward 6 m starting from rest. How much time it will take for the elevator to
reach a height of 6 m? Neglect the mass of the pulleys and cables. Assume 𝑔 = 9.81 m/s2.

[3] A slender uniform rod AB has a mass of 10 kg and a length of 2 m. Using a collar of negligible mass,
its end A is confined to move along the smooth circular bar of radius √2 m. End B rests on the floor,
for which the coefficient of kinetic friction is 𝜇 = 0.4. If the bar is released from rest when θ = 30°,
determine the angular acceleration of the bar at this instant.
[15]
[4] A rod AB of mass 0.5 kg and length 200 mm rests along the smooth inner surface of a hemispherical
bowl. The rod is released from rest from the position shown and it swings so that end B goes
downward, and end A goes to the left. Determine its angular velocity at the instant when the rod
becomes horizontal.

[5] Determine the forces in the following members of the truss: CG, CJ, GJ, and CD. State whether
these members are in tension (T) or compression (C).

[6] Write the shear force and bending moment equations for the beam shown below and draw the shear
force diagram and bending moment diagrams. Specify the values at all changes of loading positions
and at the points of zero shear force.
[15]
[7] When a 2-kg bob is given a horizontal speed of 1.5 m/s, it begins to rotate around the horizontal
circular path A. If the force F on the cord is increased, the bob rises and then rotates around the
horizontal circular path B at an angle of 60° with a vertical axis (i.e., along the line of action of Force
F), as shown in the figure below. Draw the free-body diagram of the bob and the whole system.
Determine the speed of the bob around path B and find the work done by force F.
[15]
[8] A small point-like object of mass ‘m’ rests on top of a sphere of radius R. The object is released from
the top of the sphere at a negligible speed, and it slowly starts to slide. Let g be the acceleration due
to gravity. (a) Draw the free-body diagram of the mass ‘m’. (b) Determine the angle θ with respect
to the vertical at which the object will lose contact with the surface of the sphere. (c) What is the
speed ‘v’ of the object at the instant it loses contact with the surface of the sphere.
