Reflective Activity 1

Discus the mission of your university from the point of view of content, relevance, clarity,
precision, etc

1. Reflective on the mission: the mission of my university typically encompasses several key
elements, including education and training, research and development, professionalism but it is
not highly relevant to Ethiopia’s current socio-political context like national security needs,
development goals and international cooperation. The university has good clarity and precision
due to the essential for guiding both institutional strategies and contributes to its effectiveness
respectively.

2. Reflective on the vision: the vision typically includes elements such leadership in defense
education and professional development but not highly relevant in several ways like national
security context, societal contribution and global trends. Also has a good clarity and precision to
be easily understood by all stakeholders, including students, faculty and to ensures the vision is
actionable and measurable respectively.

3. How effectively are the teachers in your HEI working towards the realizing mission and vision
of the institution?

When I evaluating the effectiveness of teachers in my HEI in realizing the mission and vision of
the institution are they effectively alignment with institutional goals, actively engage students
and learning outcomes, professional development and mission alignment.

4. What are core values of your institution?

The core values typically include:

Integrity: Upholding ethical standards and transparency in all academic and military activities.

Discipline: Emphasizing the importance of order, respect, and responsibility in both personal
conduct and academic pursuits.

Collaboration: Promoting teamwork and cooperation among students, faculty, and military
personnel.
Innovation: Encouraging creativity and adaptability in addressing challenges related to national
defense and security.

1. How relevant and important are the various leader ship positions for the effective functions of
higher education institute?

Leadership positions in higher education institutions are crucial for their effective functioning.it
has several ways in which these roles are relevant and important. Overall, effective leadership is
integral to the success of higher education institutions, influencing their ability to fulfill their
missions and adapt to changing educational landscapes

2. To what extent does the top leader ship understand and support the efforts of lower academic
units to achieve the ultimate goals of the institution?

The extent to which top leadership understands and supports the efforts of lower academic units
is critical for achieving an institution's ultimate goals. But top leaderships couldn’t actively
understand and supports the efforts of lower academic units, it cannot create a more cohesive and
effective organizational structure, ultimately cannot enhancing the institution's ability to achieve
its mission and goals.

1. How reasonable are the rights and duties of the academic staff as indicated in the senate
legislation of your university?

The rights and duties of academic staff as outlined in the senate legislation of higher education
institutions are generally designed to balance academic freedom, professional responsibility, and
institutional governance. However, the actual implementation and interpretation can significantly
affect how reasonable these provisions feel in practice

2. To what extent are higher education teachers (in your university) performing according to
their duties and responsibilities as indicated in the senate legislation?
The extent to which higher education teachers perform according to their duties and
responsibilities, as outlined in senate legislation, can vary widely based on several factors like
workload expectations, research and teaching balance and external factors but overall, most of
the teachers strive to perform according to their duties, various internal and external factors can
impact their ability to do so effectively.

1. What do reflection, reflective practice and reflective teaching mean to you?

To me, reflection, reflective practice, and reflective teaching are interconnected concepts that
involve looking back on experiences, critically analyzing them, and using those insights to
improve future actions, whether in personal development, professional growth, or in the context.

Reflection: is the act of thinking about past experiences, considering how they went, what
Reflective practice: refers to the ongoing process of using reflection in a systematic, thoughtful,
and often structured way as part of one’s professional practice. Worked well, what didn’t, and
why of education

Reflective teaching: is the application of reflective practice specifically within the teaching
profession. It involves teachers critically examining their teaching methods, classroom
interactions, and their students’ learning outcomes.

2. Based on your teaching experiences, give examples of reflection on, in and for action.

Reflection on Action: This type of reflection occurs after a teaching event, when you step back
and think critically about what has already happened.

Example: After a lesson, I reflect on how my students responded to the activities I planned.

Reflection in Action: Reflection in action happens during the teaching process, while you're
actively teaching or engaging with students.

Example: During a class discussion, I notice that a few students seem disengaged, and their
body language suggests they are confused.
Reflection for Action: This type of reflection involves thinking ahead and considering how your
past experiences will shape your future actions.

Example: After the lesson where I struggled with pacing, I reflect on how I can prevent that
from happening again in the future

Reflective Activity 5

1. Which reflective technique is more preferable and appropriate for teaching/learning and for
lifelong learning? How?

Techniques which is the most preferable and appropriate.

For Teaching/Learning:

Action Research and Portfolios are likely the most appropriate for teaching and learning in a
formal, long-term context. Action research offers a systematic approach to improving practice,
while portfolios provide a structured way to track progress over time. Both techniques encourage
ongoing, evidence-based improvement and reflection.

For Lifelong Learning:

Diaries and Portfolios are likely the most beneficial for lifelong learners. Diaries support
personal, day-to-day reflection and emotional awareness, making them great for ongoing
personal growth. Portfolios, on the other hand, offer a more structured way to track and
showcase progress, which is useful for professional and career development over a longer period.

How it’s useful:

Action research is especially valuable for teachers who want to engage in systematic inquiry to
solve specific classroom issues or improve student outcomes. It is also beneficial for lifelong
learners in professional fields who want to experiment, gather evidence, and make data-informed
decisions to enhance their practice.
Reflective Activity 6

1. How effective are the above cases in changing your attitude towards applying reflective
thinking in your study and in your teaching? Explain.

The above cases have shown me how reflective thinking is not a passive activity but an active
process that drives continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

Overall, these cases have transformed my approach to reflective thinking, making me view it as a
vital tool for growth, problem-solving, and creating a positive, inclusive learning environment. I
now feel more confident and motivated to incorporate reflective thinking regularly into both my
studies and teaching practices.

1. What is your best characteristic as a teacher?

My best characteristic as a teacher would be clarity. I strive to present complex ideas in simple,
understandable terms, breaking down information into digestible pieces. This helps students
engage with the material more easily and reduces anxiety.

2. Which role model characteristic do you most want to develop?

My role model characteristics which I want to develop is case 3 aster’s characteristic.

1. In your opinion, how fairly do teachers in your university treat students with diverse
background?

Ideally, fairness in treating students with diverse backgrounds should be a priority in every
classroom. In my opinion even in practice, teachers in my universities can do much to support
students from diverse backgrounds.

2. You most probably had the experience of teaching students with different attributes (linguistic,
socio-economic, etc). How well did you manage the task? If you faced problems in this regard,
how did you resolve them?
Managing a diverse classroom requires sensitivity, flexibility, and ongoing reflection. The key to
successfully navigating challenges lies in adaptability—adapting teaching methods, assessment
styles, and classroom management to the unique needs of each student. If problems arise, they
can usually be resolved through communication, collaboration, and a willingness to adjust
strategies as needed to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

1. Reflective activity

I made a concerted effort to engage in the reflective activities, and I found them to be a valuable
component of my learning. I actively took part in self-assessments, journaling my thoughts, and
reviewing my progress in relation to the module content.

2. Contributions to group work

I believe I contributed positively to the group work in Module One, particularly through
collaboration, idea sharing, and taking responsibility for specific tasks. I made sure to listen
actively to my group members, offering constructive feedback and being open to others'
perspectives. I took the initiative to organize and coordinate certain aspects of the group project,
ensuring that everyone had a clear understanding of their roles and deadlines.

3. Attendance and punctuality

Throughout Module One, I made it a priority to attend all sessions and be punctual. I understand
