THE

GOSPEL
OF THE
KINGDOM
Is it still relevant?

SHARING CHRIST
FOR ORDINARY CHRISTIANS
Background to this book
One of the modules we had to complete as part of my
Biblical Studies, included a three-part assignment on
'Sharing Christ with others in the world of today'.

Although the content touched on various approaches in

reaching out to different target groups and nations, the
bulk of testimonies shared in this book come from
reaching out to communities in South Africa.

Shortly after teaching this content to a number of people,

those who started applying the methods and using the
material provided here, have seen the Lord bless them
with countless gospel-sharing experiences and
testimonies of their own.

My prayer is that it would be the same for you, once you

start using these methods and material.
Give yourself no rest, so the Lord Jesus may have His
glory crown from your life!

All for His glory,

Estell Brink

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION
My husband and I became 'send out' missionaries of our local
congregation in 1999, when we joined a national prayer ministry in
our nation of South Africa. Since then, we have been involved in
various projects, specifically related to calling the body of Christ to
prayer for the salvation of the unsaved and revival in the church.

Over the years, our hearts' desire has been to see souls come into
the Kingdom of God - from every tribe and tongue and people and
nation (Revelation 5:9). There is a deep need and urgency for the
global church to demonstrate the power of the Holy Spirit, as the
first church did. Often, however, the focus of the church has been on
obtaining more 'gifts' or the 'supernatural power of God' and on the
'benefits of following Christ' for the Believer. As important as all
these aspects are, the focus on furthering of the Kingdom of God on
earth, as it is in heaven, must be centred on Christ, and the reason He
came to earth.

Countless books have been written about this topic, so it makes no

sense to repeat it all. Yet, it is plain to see that there is a general
reluctance amongst Believers, globally, to share their faith and
testimony openly with others, whether friends, family or strangers.
The idea that other ministries are already doing this has crept into
the hearts and minds of many.

Some Believers give sacrificially to missions, which is good, godly and

biblical, but it can also become an excuse for not sharing Christ
actively. Perhaps Believers reason that if they support a ministry
doing the work of evangelism or missions, their responsibility has
been fulfilled. In fact, most Believers even feel uncomfortable if they
encounter someone 'on fire' for the Lord, who is actively sharing the
gospel wherever they go!

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

2

In general, we have been taught that to impose our view on

someone else is rude. Yet, when Believers' rights are imposed upon,
we simply accept it and don't utter a word of protest! This is does
not apply to all Believers, naturally, but it is unfortunately true of
many Believers.

On the other hand, some Believers feel guilty for not doing more for
God. They are willing and eager to do the work of evangelism, but
simply don't know where to start, or how to fit it into their lives.
Most find it easier to adopt a healthier lifestyle, take on some social
responsibility or even fit studying into their lives than to structure
evangelising the Kingdom into their day-to-day lives.

When it comes to cultivating a life of prayer and sharing Christ,

Believers have many different responses: Some say, "After my kids
are grown, I will take my Quiet Time seriously again"; others, "I am too
busy now; I will become a full-time evangelist when I have retired".

Unfortunately, churches in the main, place too little emphasis on the

responsibility of every Believer to share the love of Christ, as part of
glorifying His name. Minimal guidance is offered concerning what
this could look like practically, and thus many Believers don't engage
in living a life of testifying boldly of Christ.

It is impossible to cover every possible situation, circumstance or

scenario a Believer may face in sharing Christ, but the pages that
follow aim to provide some practical guidelines for how ordinary
Christians - not necessarily those called as evangelists - can share
Christ on a daily basis, without guilt or embarrassment.

What this book is not…

The message contained in this book is not the same as what you
learn on the EE3-, Alpha- or Explaining the Four Spiritual Laws
Courses. Such courses are extremely important, and I encourage
every Believer to do as many of them as possible. We need to equip
ourselves constantly in the varied and differing ways of sharing
Christ, and grow in our understanding of how to fulfil the

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

3

commandment He gave His disciples (which includes us) before He

ascended to heaven (see Matthew 24:14 and Mark 16:15). The
varying approaches different courses take help us to share the
gospel, and show us how we can be more versatile in our approach
and handling of a wide variety of scenarios.

The main focus of this book is also not to cover normal evangelistic-
and missions training or group outreaches, though examples of such
missions and outreaches are mentioned. Instead, the main focus is
on cultivating a lifestyle of attentive awareness to the prompting of
the Holy Spirit to reach out to others, whether they are people
known to you or strangers.

Practical guidelines for situations you may encounter are included,

such as how to answer difficult questions, how to approach a
stranger, how to handle challenges, etc. Advice gleaned from
mistakes our contributors have made in their own journeys is also
included, as well as links to free resources and notes that will help
you in your evangelistic journey.

To understand the concept of sharing the Gospel of the Kingdom,

we have to start by studying the commandment of the Lord Jesus
Christ in last few verses of Matthew, Mark and Luke:

Matthew 28:19-20 – Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Mark 16:15-18 – And He said to them, "Go into all the world and
preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will
be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these
signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out
demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents;
and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will
lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

4

Luke 24:45-48 – And He opened their understanding, that they might

comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, "Thus it is written,
and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the
dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be
preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are
witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon
you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power
from on high."

We can summarise Jesus' commandment to His disciples as follows:

a) to preach the gospel, as He did while He was on earth;
b) to heal the sick, cast out demons and raise the dead, as He did
while He was on earth;
c) to make disciples of new Believers, as He did while He was on
earth, and
d) to wait to be filled with the Holy Spirit's power from on high, as
Jesus did while He was on earth.

These are ALL very important aspects of the execution of the Great
Commission (Mark 16:15-18). In the pages that follow, we will only
tiptoe through some aspects of the Great Commission, focusing
mainly on sharing the Gospel of the Kingdom. The remaining aspects
require much more time than these pages will allow. It is my earnest
prayer, though, that most of you are already involved in fulfilling the
other aspects in your Church or nation.

Am I called to be a witness?
The way in which 'missions' is often described can leave us thinking
that, if we are not called by God to go to another nation to preach
the gospel, we are not expected to evangelise! Whilst it may be true
that we are not all called by God to be evangelists; we are all
expected to be His witnesses! These words of Jesus should cause
each one of us to take heed and tremble!

Matthew 10:32-33 – Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him

I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever
denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

5

heaven.

Where does that leave us? Remember: God will use you to minister
to others where He has placed you, using the gifts He has given you.
If you have a love for children, ask God how you can help them to
place their trust in Jesus. If you have a love for street people, ask
God how you can share Jesus with them, and how you can
encourage them to step into a relationship with Him. If you are
involved in business, ask God how and with whom you can share the
gospel in ways that will cause them to think about their salvation. If
you are working in the medical field, you have amazing opportunities
to share about Jesus! If you are a housewife, you have access to
schools and parents, etc.

Don't try to be something God has not called you to be; and don't be
tempted to do what you see someone else doing, even though it may
seem to be bearing fruit for the Kingdom. Instead, ask the Holy Spirit
to show you what you should be doing, right where you are! Never
act out of presumption – doing what you think is a good thing – only
do what the Holy Spirit has shown you to do (John 5:19, 30, 15:4).

The title of this book is The Gospel of the Kingdom. When we speak
about spreading the Gospel of the Kingdom, it is important to ask
the question, what is the difference between witnessing and
evangelism?

Witnessing and evangelising overlap to a certain extent: You could

say witnessing is a type of evangelism.

The term, 'witnessing' derives from the expression 'to bear witness' –
you bear witness to what has happened, to what you have seen and
now believe. Therefore, witnessing usually takes place in a one-on-
one setting, where you relay a personal experience you have had.
Evangelising usually occurs in larger groups or at mass events,
though it does sometimes happen in a personal, one-on-one setting.

Another way of looking at the difference between the two is to look

at the difference in the result. Witnessing focuses primarily on
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
6

bringing people a step closer to believing in God. Evangelising

focuses on convincing people to take the final step of putting their
faith in Christ.

Thus, we could say that every Christian can witness. In fact, we have
a duty to do so! However, the ability to evangelise rests only on
some Believers. A person endued with the gift of evangelism will see
many people decide to follow Christ.

In practise, witnessing is what every Christian does with their life

choices - their 'Christian walk'. If your life choices do not exemplify
Christ's standards, your Christian walk will have no integrity, and you
will be a poor witness for Christ. When any Believer witnesses,
sharing their testimony may eventually lead to someone's
conversion, but it could take several conversations and
demonstrations of God’s love to overcome the person's objections
and misconceptions before they are ready to surrender their lives to
Christ. Witnessing is an on-going process.

Evangelism is one of the five-fold ministries; it is an 'office', a calling

to both witness and preach the gospel message. It is a life-long calling
(examples of well-known evangelists are Reinhardt Bonnke, Billy
Graham and Daniel Kolenda).

In summary1
>> Witnessing is telling others what Jesus has done for me.

>> Evangelising is telling others what Jesus can do for them (as I
present the gospel to them).

This brings us to another important question: What is the difference

between the 'Gospel of Salvation' and the 'Gospel of the Kingdom'?

Though this is not the case for every church, in general, when it
comes to preaching the gospel message, the main focus of Churches

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

7

tends to be on the Gospel of Salvation, with the chief aim of getting

'souls saved'. This focus puts new Believers at risk: They think they
are now 'safe' and on their way to heaven! Failing to teach new
Believers what a life in Christ entails, has led to a generation of
Believers whose lives are not grounded upon biblical principles and
values - the very principles that should make their lives look different
from those in the world! It is to our shame that many Christians do
not really know what they believe and are not able to answer
questions about their faith! Some are not even sure what the
difference is between the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit!

The Gospel of the Kingdom is not only about salvation and going to
heaven, it is also about equipping and establishing Believers so that
they can make a difference while they are still on the earth! The role
of the church is not only to teach Christians about going to heaven,
but how they can make a difference here on earth!

This message is very clear in the well known Our Father Prayer Jesus,
Himself, taught His disciples:

Matthew 6:10 – Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is

in heaven.

Well-known Christian author, Oswald Chambers, said, “It is not a

question of being saved from hell, but in being saved in order to manifest
the Son of God in our mortal flesh."

Consider the question: Why has God allowed us to receive new birth
and yet remain here on earth? There would be no reason for us to
remain on earth if there was nothing more to be done here! We
remain on earth so that we might establish and demonstrate the
Kingdom of God in this world – in our families, our workplaces and
in our communities.2

8

Furthermore, when Jesus returns, we will rule and reign with Him
over all the earth. When God created Adam and Eve, He set them
over all creation (Genesis 1:27-28). When Adam fell into sin, he lost
that position of authority to rule over creation and was put out of
the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:17-23).

After Christ's death and resurrection, those who live their lives in
and through Him are restored to the position from which Adam fell,
that is to say, we have been made righteous in Christ and now enjoy
fellowship with God again, as Adam once did. We are seated with
Christ in heavenly places! From this position, we are to take
dominion over the earth and everything on it and subdue it once
again (Ephesians 1:3, 20, 2:6, 3:10, 6:12).

Grasping the depth of the meaning of this position and place is very
important in understanding the quest of preaching the Gospel of the
Kingdom.

Romans 8:19-21 – For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly

waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected
to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope;
because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of
corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Therefore, our expectations in preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom

should not only be for salvation in order to escape hell; it should also
include the message that in Christ we are restored as sons and
daughters of our Heavenly Father, and we have a responsibility to
rule and reign over the earth. The authority that is in Christ
(John 17:2) has been given to us (Matthew 10:1).

We look forward to the day of Christ's return, when we will rule with
Him (John 14:3; Revelation 3:12, 5:10). There is so much more to the
Gift of Salvation than just getting saved and going to heaven! We
also have to share and teach about CHRIST'S RETURN AND HIS
KINGSHIP. That is the 'whole' Gospel; the complete message of the
Lord Jesus Christ.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

Now that we have established the difference between witnessing

and evangelising, and between the Gospel of Salvation and the
Gospel of the Kingdom, we will look at other important aspects of
sharing Christ, and the different roles we, as Believers, can play.

Chapter 2

THE IMPORTANCE OF A PRAYER STRATEGY

IN SHARING THE GOSPEL
Despite our zeal to do something for the Lord, we may end up
encountering resistance, trouble and disappointment. We all have
stories of times we went on outreach or about ministry work and
returned red-faced or disappointed. Only then did we realise that we
had not prayed very much for those endeavours!

Think back to the last outreach or ministry event you were part of.
How much time and effort was devoted to prayer before the
outreach? Did your prayers centre on God's provision for the
outreach and seeing a great harvest from it? The role and impact of
ministry work saturated in prayer can never be underestimated! A
specific prayer strategy for a harvest of souls, and a work of the
Kingdom to be established in the lives of individuals, in cities and in
nations is what is needed; not merely prayer for finances to go on
the outreach, or to buy food, material and Bibles to give to people,
though these aspects are also important to pray for.

Think back to when you were a new Christian, or at Bible College or

a participant of an outreach or evangelism course. During this time,
did you pray often and earnestly for the Lord to provide you with
opportunities to testify of Christ daily? If so, then seldom a day will
have passed without you being afforded an opportunity! On the days
when you neglected to ask the Holy Spirit for opportunities to share
Christ, I'm guessing there were few or no opportunities. It's easy in
hindsight to see that we have what we pray for on a daily basis!
When we are passionate about souls, and we earnestly ask the Lord
for opportunities to testify and share the gospel on a daily basis,
opportunities will come our way without us even having to look for
them!

I want to share with you a few stories about what can happen when
we give a specific focus to prayer before doing ministry of any kind,
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
11

whether it be 'full force' evangelism, or simply speaking to someone

or a group of individuals on the street when we have trusted God for
opportunities.

Prayer strategy for a group

In the city where my husband and I live, there is a particular
evangelistic outreach that takes places in the city centre every
weekend. People with a passion for street evangelism gather to pray
before going out onto the streets. One group goes out while the
others remain behind to pray for their protection and for their
evangelising to bear fruit. The teams rotate throughout the night
every 2-3 hours, those having gone out returning to rest and pray,
while the next group goes out.

One weekend, a group from our Church was invited to join this
outreach, most specifically to set up a worship-watch of 6 hours
throughout most of the night (nightlife comes alive from around
10 p.m.). Our group divided into teams comprised of musicians,
singers and intercessors. Each team took a 2-hour worship slot,
where we prayed, sang and worshipped God, as the outreach teams
continued to rotate through the night.

Afterwards, the leader of the outreach told our group that something
interesting had happened, which they had not experienced before:
As the teams returned, they reported that more people on the
streets were open to listening to them share the gospel, and more
people responded positively and accepted Jesus! In general, people
were less aggressive, and did not swear at them so much. That night,
we witnessed the amazing impact of continued prayer, and
specifically, worship to God! Something in the spiritual atmosphere
opened up that night, which made it easier for the outreach teams to
share the gospel. Not only that, more fruit for the harvest was seen
that night!

Another example of a prayer strategy for outreach is what happened

in a closed nation in the East. A friend, living mainly among people of
a different religion, phoned me one afternoon. He had taken a group

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

12

to do outreach in a remote area, where inroads for the gospel had

been unsuccessful. On every corner, they had experienced rejection
and suffered many insults. That evening, we did a video call and
prayed together earnestly. The next day, they went out again and
something remarkable happened: The same people that rejected and
scolded them the day before, now accepted them coming into their
area and were willing to listen to them! Some even committed their
lives to the Lord Jesus that day! Again, I say, a focused, specific and
strategic prayer before outreach has a very significant impact!

This next example of what the impact a prayer strategy can have on
outreach is from another closed community in the Middle East. In
this country, Believers go to a place the Lord has previously shown
them to evangelise. They rent a small apartment and divide their
number into groups of two or three people. They schedule the
groups to read and pray the Word of God aloud 24-hours a day,
filling the spiritual atmosphere with the truth of God's Word. They
start in Genesis and read to the end of Revelation before starting
again. They do this non-stop for three months, after which they send
the first workers out on to the street to look for opportunities to
testify and share the gospel. Bear in mind that we are talking about a
closed country, where you could be sent to jail without trial for
proselytising!

However, through their prayer strategy, the spiritual atmosphere is

so well prepared that they, in fact, see several salvations take place
in a short period of time! As people respond and commit their lives
to Christ, they are usually rejected by their families. These new
Believers are then taken to the apartment to be discipled, and of
course, they join the Bible reading and prayer schedule immediately!
Can you imagine how fast they grow spiritually, and how firmly
established they become in their relationship with the Lord!

These testimonies underscore the importance of waiting on the Lord

as a group before going out on outreach, in order to hear His prayer
strategy for the outreach. If the prayer strategy is lacking, the
outreach may still go ahead, but it will not bear much fruit. Through
lack of adequate prayer, the team will be vulnerable and will
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
13

encounter many struggles, all which could have been avoided.

Therefore, there is great wisdom in giving time to hear God's heart
for the prayer strategy, as well as to hear His strategy for the
outreach itself.

Where does the Bible mention having a 'prayer

strategy'?
The best example of God giving a prayer strategy before engaging in
battle is, of course, the battle of Jericho! God gave Israel a prayer
and worship strategy that lasted seven days. Only after seven days,
were they allowed to enter into battle and then the victory came. So
many supernatural things happened that day – I am sure the angels
fought with Israel! Israel's praise and worship released the
supernatural power of God from on high; the city walls fell, and the
army marched right into the city!

Joshua 6:20 – So the people shouted when the priests blew the
trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell
down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight
before him, and they took the city.

However wonderful and successful this strategy was for taking

Jericho, we cannot follow its pattern for every outreach we do! Yet,
like Israel, we also must pray and hear from God – what is on His
heart for each assignment we take on? After all, it is HIS kingdom, it
is HIS battle, the souls are HIS, and we are HIS servants and warriors.
It is all about HIM!

These stories show us real-life examples of how the spiritual

atmosphere responds to prayer, worship, fasting and waiting on God.

Why do I see so few salvations?

Research has shown that not every person who hears the gospel for
the first time will accept Christ and surrender their lives to Him. It
often takes a number of interactions for someone to come to the
point where they are ready to give their life to Christ. This is
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
14

influenced by their experiences, disappointments, questions and so

on. You or I may not be the final instrument used in the sequence of
encounters a person needs before they surrender their life to Christ.
Understanding this changed everything for me!

1 Corinthians 3:5-6 – Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but

ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I
planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.

I pray the Lord would break the misconception many Believers have
that they have failed if they do not lead someone to Jesus every day!
The truth is, we all have the opportunity to share Jesus every day,
and we trust the Holy Spirit to work in each life we minister to every
time we step out in obedience to share about Christ. Our focus
should be on looking for opportunities to speak about Jesus every
day. If we do so faithfully, we will bring many people a step closer to
making their final decision to surrender their lives to Christ.

When we pray with all our heart, and ask the Holy Spirit to provide
us with opportunities to make conversation with someone God
knows is in need of Jesus, on a specific day at a specific moment, all
will be well. There is still no guarantee that you won't be met with
rejection, but all will be well!

Sometimes, simply taking care of a person's immediate need through

an act of compassion can restore their faith in the possibility that
God cares for them after all! They will be more receptive to the next
person who shares the gospel with them as a result.

Approaching different people

You may be thinking, but how do I share Christ with a stranger or, how
can I share Christ at work where it is not permitted? These are very
important questions and more relevant than you think!

There is undoubtedly a difference in the way we approach someone

we know with the gospel and how we would approach a stranger.
We encounter those known to us often, but we may encounter a

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

15

stranger only once in our lifetime. So how do we approach them; and

how do we share about Christ?

A. Complete strangers
A person you may encounter only once means you will have little
time for conversation. Let's say you sit next to someone on a bus or
in a taxi. You could start by asking them where they are from or
where they are going. If you pass someone in the street, comment
on the weather. If you are in the supermarket, talk about the
produce you are both looking at. These are simply ways to start a
conversation. If the person shares something about themselves, ask
about what they have shared. If it seems appropriate, ask if you can
pray for them. If you cannot pray with them, tell them you will pray
for them on that day. Be faithful and keep your commitment to pray
for them – it does not matter that you may never see them again.

Be prepared and always have printed material with you, especially

material in different languages (even small Bibles, if possible). Listen
to the Holy Spirit's guidance, and just before you part ways, give
them a tract, a book, a Bible, or something specific the Holy Spirit
has pointed out to you whilst you were speaking to them.

A word of caution, however: Be sensitive! In some closed nations,

being found with Christian material in your possession (especially a
Bible), can put you at risk of being arrested, interrogated or rejected
by your family. Ask the Lord what would be to the benefit of the
stranger you encounter, in every instance.

B. Known people
When it comes to people we encounter on a regular basis, our
approach will be different to our outreach to a stranger. It is very
important to watch your conduct at all times. Be sure to greet people
you encounter often heartily every time you pass them by. When the
situation allows, pause for a while and start a conversation with
them. Ask them about themselves, their family, their work, their
difficulties, etc. Be bold and tell them that you will pray for them.
Then, be faithful and pray for them at home.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

16

When you next meet, ask them how they are now faring, or
something in relation to what you spoke of previously. If there was a
breakthrough or improvement, say something like, "I prayed for you".
If nothing has shifted, say, "I will continue to pray for you". After a few
such times, ask if you can pray for them on the spot. If they agree,
pray a short prayer (do not pray for a long time - this is not the time -
you do not want them to avoid you next time!)

Continue to engage in conversation and prayer like this for a time

and build trust. Share only what Holy Spirit shows you to every time
– nothing more, nothing less. Be careful not to overwhelm them in
the beginning… Remember, you are still building trust! In time, the
Lord may lead you to give them a small gift or cook a meal for them
if they are going through a difficult time. Do as the Holy Spirit leads
you, but be very careful not to create the expectation that you will
always provide for them, and do not make them dependant by any
means! When you do help, do so in a way that makes them feel
respected and dignified. You will know when the time is right to
share the whole gospel. Then, pray for them on a daily basis.

Cultivating a general awareness

If you desire to engage in a lifestyle of sharing Christ, you must
cultivate a continuous awareness of the people around you in
everyday life, and be sensitive to when the when the Lord prompts
you to reach out to them in one way or another. Among the stories
shared in this book, you will find something you can do, no matter
how small it may seem to you! Remember, sharing Christ is a way of
life – a lifestyle that we cultivate over time, until it becomes natural
for us to listen to the Lord, and do whatever He shows us to do. This
is the key: LISTEN and DO. We don't do what we think we should
do! When we 'listen and do', the Holy Spirit will show us who is
ready and who isn't.

The following story is from a lady who is used powerfully by the Lord
to reach out to strangers, simply because she yields so willingly to
the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Testimony: Follow Him on the mountaintops!

Caren lives in Cape Town, South Africa. One morning upon waking,
the Lord instructed her to go to the top of Table Mountain in the
cable car, and to take a new Bible with her. This presented a
challenge because Caren had neither transportation nor money! Yet,
she arose, prepared herself and took a new Bible from the shelf. She
supernaturally found a way to travel into the city of Cape Town and
on to the Cable Car Station at the foot of Table Mountain. A further
miracle of provision later and she had the necessary fare to go up the
mountain! Once at the top, she started looking for the person the
Lord had indicated she would meet there…but he was nowhere to be
found! Undiscouraged, she walked around, praying and looking for
him.

Finally, she saw him! He was clearly of another faith, so she engaged
gently with him in conversation, asking where he was from, about his
career and other such things. After a short while, he started sharing
his thoughts about life, and the Lord helped Caren to direct his
questions into a conversation about faith. They continued in
conversation for the next couple of hours! By this time, he was
completely open to her, and when she told him her testimony and
handed him the Bible, he was receptive, although he had no idea
what a Bible was! He promised to read it from that day forward!
Although Caren did not lead him to Jesus right there and then, the
Lord did use her to move the heart of this man one step closer to
receiving Him as Saviour, all because she was willing and obedient to
leave her comfort zone and travel to the top of a mountain!

In the same way, the Holy Spirit may invite you (through the
promptings of your heart) to step out in faith - no matter the cost -
spend time with someone, answer their questions and help them
consider their life and all eternity.

Chapter 3

THE ROLE AND GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

IN EVANGELISM
Up until now, we have looked at what witnessing and evangelising
are and explored the differences between them; and we have looked
at how the 'Gospel of Salvation' differs from the 'Gospel of the
Kingdom'. We have also looked at how we can reach out to people
we encounter in everyday life, as well as to strangers.

As we read testimonies and stories of people reaching out to others

with the message of Jesus, and their work reaping much fruit, it may
leave us feeling inadequately equipped or gifted to do the same. I
remember when our team first presented this material in a course:
Over 500 people from 20 nations signed up! We were completely
overwhelmed, as one after another registration for the course kept
streaming in! It made us realise how much Believers desire to share
Christ, but also how intimidated they feel to do so!

Testimony: One of our greatest encouragements came from a field

evangelist working in a closed African country. He had previously
been a lector at the University of Islam in his nation. He had come to
know the Lord Jesus as he studied the Quran in order to answer
questions his students posed. Through his diligent studies of the
Quran, he had been convicted of the sovereignty and divinity of
Christ! Since that time, he has since been serving the Lord Jesus
faithfully, and he has even been imprisoned several times.

At the end of the study on this specific chapter on the role of the
gifts of the Holy Spirit in evangelism, he sent us a letter sharing his
story: He said that in all the years since his conversion, he had never
heard anything like this! He knew about the Holy Spirit, and had
even prayed for people to receive the Holy Spirit; yet, no one had
ever explained to him the working of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in
evangelism. This has since influenced the way he and his fellow
workers encourage others in their outreach and evangelistic efforts,
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
19

and the Lord blesses their work in winning souls greatly among the
most difficult regions in their nation!

There is a lot of teaching (and many opinions and interpretations) on

the work and role of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The purpose of this chapter is not so much to teach about the
different gifts of the Holy Spirit, as it is to give an overview, and to
demonstrate the application of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in
evangelism, through testimonies of how individual gifts can flow
when we reach out to share the Gospel of the Kingdom of the Lord
Jesus Christ. Often, different gifts of the Holy Spirit work together
to accomplish the work of the Lord for His glory.

Aside from sharing the Cross of Jesus Christ and speaking to people
about eternal life, we have also a responsibility to demonstrate the
power of the Kingdom of God. How do we do this? First of all, our
lives have to be completely surrendered to the leading of the Holy
Spirit at all times. In actual fact, when you think about it, the real
evangelist is inside us! If we really believe this, we won't have to
seek out someone or 'target' someone with whom to share the
gospel; we need only listen to the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit
within us, and He will show us (on a daily basis) who are the ones
that are ready, the ones on His agenda. Furthermore, He will tell us
what we need to say or give them so that they take a step closer to
surrendering their lives to Christ.

Many people have really misunderstood the concept of sharing the

gospel because the role of the Holy Spirit was not explained well or
not demonstrated clearly. We may have been taught about the Holy
Spirit, but we never learned how to walk with Him, and we don't
know much about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Believers are often
told that the appearance of signs and miracles is no longer part of life
today because they were only given to the disciples, and
demonstrated by them, after Christ's ascension in order to establish
the first church.

My first encounter of a miracle (that happened right in front of me)

was when my husband and I had been married for a number of years.
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
20

One of our colleagues was in a serious car accident, and she suffered
severe back pain due to her injuries. We heard of a Church in our
area that prayed for sick people every Wednesday, and we decided
to take her there. After a time of worship and a short message, the
minister came down from the podium and started to pray for
everyone present, one after the other. When it was our turn, my
husband explained our friend's situation. The minister smiled at us,
and there was so much love on his face! Then, he then said to my
husband, "Young man, please come and see how to pray for someone, so
you will be able to do this after today". He knelt down on the floor and
started to pray for our friend. Right before our eyes, her back
straightened, the pain vanished, and her legs became of equal length!
The minister then said, "Remember, you can now go and pray for
anyone in need of healing. It does not require a special person to do this.
It is part of your inheritance in Christ".

How true this is! Filled with great faith and excitement, we started to
pray for others, and soon there were several healings! Why? Simply
because a man, greatly used of the Lord, told us that God can use
anyone, and he made sure he demonstrated to us how to pray for
someone! I can never praise the Lord enough for this incident!

Once you make this mind shift, everything changes: It changes from
you having to do something or get some result, to just listening to
and doing what the Holy Spirit shows you to do. My brothers and
sisters, the Holy Spirit knows exactly who needs what and on which
day, whether it is something as simple as a hug, a tract or a word of
encouragement or whether it is to receive healing. If we would only
listen to and obey Him, all the guilt and fear we feel when reaching
out to others will vanish, and our self-condemnation will be a thing
of the past! As much as He is our leader in everyday life, even more
so is He our leader on this subject!

Difference between the gifts and the fruit of the Holy

Spirit
The Bible says that all gifts ultimately have their source in God
(James 1:17).
James 1:17 – Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and
comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or
shadow of turning.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not the same as the fruit of the Holy
Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12-14) have to do
with service or ministering to others, while the fruit of the Spirit has
to do with the character of Christ formed in us (Galatians 5:22-23).

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given by God our Father to the
Believer who asks for them (Luke 11:13). The fruit of the Spirit
becomes evident in the life of every Believer who grows in faith, and
as the character of Christ is formed in them. The use of all spiritual
gifts will one day come to an end (Ephesians 4:11-13), but the work
and evidence of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in us is permanent; it will
never cease of fade away (1 Corinthians 13:8).

Difference between gifts of the Holy Spirit and

'offices' in the church
The gifts of the Holy Spirit must also be distinguished from the
various offices or functions mentioned in the New Testament in
Ephesians 4:11-13, namely apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors
and teachers. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are especially given to
equip those standing in these offices to execute their responsibilities
in the Kingdom of God, whether it is in the Church or in evangelism
and ministry.

Definition of spiritual gifts

A spiritual gift is a supernatural ability given by God to the Believer
for the purpose of serving the body of Christ. Spiritual gifts are God-
given and are under the direction of the Holy Spirit. It is much more
than just a mere human talent!

Description of the gifts of the Holy Spirit

Different Greek terms are used to describe the various spiritual gifts:

1. Pneumatikoi
In 1 Corinthians 12:1, Paul uses the word 'pneumatikoi', which is
usually translated as 'spiritual gifts'. A more literal translation is
'spiritual things' or 'spirituals'. This comes from another Greek word,
'pneuma', to describe the Holy Spirit of God. Pneumatikoi informs us
that the gifts of the Spirit are activated by the indwelling Holy Spirit;
and not by our natural ability.

2. Charismata
In 1 Corinthians 12:4, Paul uses the word, 'charismata', simply
translated as 'gifts' or 'gifts of grace'. This shows us that spiritual gifts
are given or bestowed by the Holy Spirit as an act of divine grace,
given freely to Believers who desire them.

3. Diakonia
In 1 Corinthians 12:5, Paul uses the word 'diakonia' to describe
spiritual gifts. This word is translated in the New Testament as
'administration', 'ministering', 'ministration', 'ministry', 'minister',
'office', 'relief', 'service', 'serving', 'to do service'. Jesus uses 'diakoneo'
in Mark 10:45 when He said, "For even the Son of Man did not come to
be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many". This
verse serves as our plumb line to understand why we are given the
gifts of the Hoy Spirit – it should never be about ourselves, but
about glorifying God and serving others.

Think about your own life: Do you see some of the spiritual gifts
mentioned flow in your life? Are you satisfied with the way you flow in
these gifts? Is there something you can do to flow in the gifts of the Holy
Spirit more regularly?

What is the purpose of the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

• To build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 14: 4, 12).
• To build up yourself (1 Corinthians 14:4; Jude 20).
• To comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3).

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

23

• To encourage (1 Corinthians 14:3, 31).

• To win souls (1 Corinthians 14:23-25).
• To proclaim Jesus as Lord (Mark 16:20; Acts 1:8;
1 Corinthians 12:3).
• To provide evidence of ministries (Acts 2:22, 8:6, 14:3;
1 Corinthians 2:4; 2 Corinthians 12:12).
• To demonstrate God's presence among us (1 Corinthians 14:25).
• To set captives and those who are oppressed free
(Matthew 10:1, 8; Luke 4:18-19; Acts 10:38).
• For the good and profit of all (1 Corinthians 12:7). The phrase
'for the profit of all' is 'pros to sympheron' in Greek meaning 'to
the profit or advantage' of all. It signifies a profit for the common
good of the community of Believers. In the Greek, 'phanerosis tou
pneumatos' means to 'manifest (make real and tangible) the Holy
Spirit'. It also means 'shining forth'. Through the gifts, the Holy
Spirit openly shows Himself visibly and audibly to all.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are freely available for every seeking
Believer. It is not the intention of the Lord for only a few special
people to have access to spiritual gifts. Any Believer seeking God's
face can flow in spiritual gifts and be equipped to do the same works
that Jesus did. Therefore, always be cautious, and check your
motives against the standard of love.

Categorising the gifts of the Holy Spirit

Interestingly, the first man, Adam, in his sinless state walked and
talked with God, and he flowed in all the fullness of the Holy Spirit,
as a result of that fellowship. Because of the Cross of Christ, His
death and resurrection, every Believer now has access to, and can
walk in, the fullness of these gifts! The nine gifts of the Holy Spirit
can be divided into three basic categories:

1. Gifts of revelation - the Eyes of God that supernaturally see and

know. Through the gifts of revelation, Adam was able to know all
about animals and name each one (Genesis 2:19-20). There are three
gifts of revelation: Word of wisdom, word of knowledge and the
discerning of spirits.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

24

2. Gifts of power - the Hands of God that supernaturally do something.

Through the gifts of power, Adam had authority and dominion over
everything on the earth, in the air and in the sea (Genesis 1:26, 28).
There are three gifts of power demonstrating the power of the
Kingdom of God: The gift of faith, the working of miracles and the
gifts of healing.

3. Gifts of communication or utterance - the Mouth of God that

supernaturally speaks. Through the gift of communication, Adam was
able to commune with God (Genesis 3:8). These are audible gifts,
telling us something from the Lord Himself, and three are
categorised here: Prophecy, diverse kinds of tongues and the
interpretation of tongues.

1. GIFTS OF REVELATION3

a) The word of wisdom (1 Corinthians 12:8)

Testimony: One day, our outreach team were walking and praying in
an area in our city where there are a lot of tourists. I saw an older
European man seated on a bench with a newborn baby of colour in
his arms. Immediately, the Lord gave us a word for him. We walked
over and started the conversation by asking about the baby. Then I
said to him, "Sir, we do not know whether you know about the Lord
Jesus Christ, but when we walked past you, the Lord gave us a word for
this baby. Would you like to hear it"? The man looked both surprised
and curious and said he would like to hear it, so we shared the word
the Lord had given us for the baby, Immediately he started tearing
up and told us that this was confirmation of what the Lord had
shared with him and his wife. They could not have children of their
own and had adopted the baby. The Lord gave them the exact same
promise I was sharing with him! They were actually Believers, and at
that point, they were going through a really difficult time, so we
asked if we could pray for the baby, and he agreed. This is an
example of the working of the gift of the Holy Spirit called 'the word

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

25

of wisdom'. The Lord gave a message about the future of that baby
and it opened a door for conversation.

A word of encouragement here - we do not always have to work out

which gift is operating when. Neither should we say, "I only flow in
this gift, or I only flow in that gift". No! You just flow with what the
Holy Spirit shows you in a specific moment or situation! When you
look back, you will see which gifts manifested in which situation.
Very often, they work together. The word of wisdom is an
inspiration of the Holy Spirit about something that is still coming.
The Lord gives us a word like that to bring hope to people; He gives
it straight from the heart of God.

Definition of the word of wisdom

The word of wisdom brings to our spirit godly skill in knowing how
and when to minister accurately into peoples' lives. It makes the
timing right and enables other gifts to flow also and have significant
impact. This gift encourages people in their walk with God.

Isaiah 50:4 - The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of the learned,
that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary.
He awakens me morning by morning; He awakens my ear to hear as the
learned.

What the word of wisdom is not

1. It is not just a deep insight into the Bible. It not merely the ability
to rightly interpret or divide the Word of God. If this were so,
any Bible teacher, preacher, student, theologian or seminarian
would possess the gift. If it were simply the product of diligent
and scholarly study of the Word of God, then it is not
supernatural in origin, and we wouldn't need to pray and ask our
Heavenly Father for it.
2. It is not the wisdom which King Solomon possessed
(1 Kings 3:12, 28). The special wisdom which King Solomon
received from God is available to any Believer, if they too walk in
the fear of God, keeping His covenants, as King Solomon did.
This promise is found in the Epistle of James: If any of you lacks
wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
26

reproach, and it will be given to him (James 1:5). The word of

wisdom is quite different from the gift of wisdom God gave to
Solomon.
3. It is not the wisdom to deal wisely with the affairs of everyday
life. It is not human wisdom. 1 Corinthians 2:4 says, "And my
speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human
wisdom...” It is not the wisdom to rule, or that which comes from
reading books or studying. It is also not the 'wisdom' mentioned
in Colossians 2:8, 1 Corinthians 1:17 and James 3:13-16. It is
supernatural wisdom, the wisdom which gives direction about
what to do, what the next step is. It speaks about the future of
an individual, a family, the church and nations.

Application of the word of wisdom

1. The word of wisdom ministers firstly to the local church. Ask the
Holy Spirit where and how you should minister the word of the
Lord in the local church. For example, Jesus spoke to Peter about
his role in the church - that the gates of Hades will not prevail
against him, and that he would have the keys of the kingdom of
heaven (Matthew 16:18-19).
2. The word of wisdom will unveil more to you about the ministry
you will do for the Lord in the future. You can ask the Lord what
ministry He has for you, where will it be and how will it take
place. Spend much time in prayer, and these answers will start to
come to your heart.
3. The word of wisdom brings HOPE to those who feel
overwhelmed, giving them a promise to hold on to and to remind
God of.

b) The word of knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:8)

Testimony - grocery shopping: This incident happened one day
when my husband and I went grocery shopping: As we entered the
shop, I noticed a security guard standing at the entrance.
Immediately, the Lord dropped a word into our hearts. The moment
we realised that the Lord had a message on His heart for this lady,
we had no fear, for we knew the Holy Spirit was about to do

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

27

something in her life, and we just needed to be obedient. We walked

up to her, gave her a tract and continued on our way. We kept an
eye on her, and she actually started reading the tract! You could see
that she was fascinated by the message on the small card. After a
while, I walked back over to her, and I asked, "What do you think
about what you have read"? I could see she was really touched, and
she said, "You know, I have read it, but I want to read it again". Then we
shared with her the word the Lord had given us for her. Her eyes
filled with tears, and we knew that she was now 'wide open'.

The message was regarding something taking place in her life at the
time and specific questions she had in her heart. I said to her, "I do
not know if you know the Lord Jesus Christ, but He gave me this word for
you. If you want, I will pray with you about these things?" She agreed,
but she was not allowed to talk to people while she was on duty. We
invited her to join us for prayer during her break, and we seated
ourselves a short distance away. We were quite surprised that she
actually came, and we were able to pray for her! The Lord spoke to
her with even more clarity about her life then. Looking back on this
incident, I see now that the encouragement from the Lord to her was
actually a word of knowledge.

What is a word of knowledge?

This gift manifests as a supernatural flow of knowledge of things in
the past or in the present, knowledge which the receiver's eyes have
not seen nor their ears have heard (knowledge that does not come
through natural means). A word of knowledge usually comes to us as
a sudden revelation and 'drops' into our hearts as a thought. When
you look at someone, or are in a certain situation, or when you are
counselling or ministering to someone, and you reach a dead end,
the Lord will usually bring a word of knowledge. It comes as a
thought, and you know without a doubt that you didn't know this
aspect about the person! As you share it, they will also know that
you could not have known it naturally, and they will be moved by the
Holy Spirit to open up, and you will be able to share more with them
then.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

28

Examples:
• Jesus telling Peter where to find their taxation money - in a fish's
mouth (Matthew 17:27)!
• Ananias in conversation with Peter (Acts 5:1-5).
• Cornelius in finding Peter, who then was instrumental in
preaching and seeing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the
Gentiles (Acts 10).

What the word of knowledge is not

• It is not being critical or judgmental. Some people attribute their
faultfinding and critical attitude to the 'gift' of a word of
knowledge!
• It is not natural knowledge. It is knowledge about something the
receiver will know could not have been known naturally. God
knows everything about everyone, even our deepest thoughts.

The purpose of the word of knowledge

1. To bring supernatural encouragement. The person who receives
it will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God hears them
and knows their heart, whether they are a Believer or not.
2. To give confirmation of something God has already been saying
or doing in someone's life.
3. To give insight and understanding regarding what lies ahead in
the purposes of God for someone's life, business, family, etc.
4. To help in counselling/evangelistic situations, when there is a
dead-end and no breakthrough in the process.
5. To unlock hindrances to healing/unanswered prayers, pointing
out exactly what the specific obstacle is.
6. To give strategies in spiritual warfare.
7. To open up a situation for God to move. It builds faith among
those present that God knows the depths of their hearts and
their circumstances.

The word of knowledge tells us more about the present and the
past. Jesus demonstrated this gift of the Holy Spirit when He met
the woman at the well (John 4:18). The word of knowledge gives you
supernatural vision/insight into situations – things people will realise
it is impossible for you to know naturally.
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
29

The keys to cultivate and increase the manifestation of this gift in

your life are:
1. A disciplined prayer life (Daniel 6:10) and
2. Having the fear of God (Psalm 25:14; Proverbs 9:10).

What does the word of knowledge do?

1. Word of knowledge strengthens those who are weak and/or
depressed to encourage them – Elijah was discouraged regarding
Jezebel's threat (1 Kings 19:1-3). He knew that the words she
spoke released evil spirits prepared by her in rituals to kill him, so
he fled. An angel brought him spiritual food and water, and he
was supernaturally strengthened to walk for forty days on that
food! He was encouraged by God through the visitation of an
angel.

2. Word of knowledge to help recognise deceivers – In ministry,

you may work with someone or supervise them, and when there
is something happening in the ministry that is not right, the Lord
will show you what is wrong through a word of knowledge, even
if the person thinks they can get away with it or deceive you.
You will have discernment through the working of this gift.

3. Word of knowledge unveils the strategies of the enemy – In

2 Kings 6:9, a man of God was sent to warn the king of Israel
about the coming Syrian army. This gift brings revelation about
enchantments, rituals or evil things done against you or the
ministry in secret. It will be revealed so that you can pray about
it. This revelation is not to scare us, but to prepare us to defeat
such plans and strategies so that God may be glorified.

4. Word of knowledge about matters in our lives – Through

Samuel exercising the gift of knowledge, he was able to tell Saul
that he no longer had to worry about his father's donkeys, for
they had been found (1 Samuel 10:2, 16).

5. Word of knowledge reveals secrets in the heart of a person –

This gift helps you to know what someone's true motives or
hidden thoughts are. For instance, Jesus was able to tell the
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
30

woman at the well about her past (John 4:17-18). She

immediately recognised Him as a prophet, and an entire city
came to repentance because of her testimony (John 4:39)! The
Lord can reveal many things to you, even the sorrows or worries
in a person's heart.

c) The gift of discerning of spirits

(1 Corinthians 12:10)
Testimony – in transit: Once, while our team was in transit in an
airport, we went to one of the shops to have a quick coffee. When
we spoke to the waitress, she cried and told us of the terrible
circumstances she was facing in her personal life. We had
compassion on her and started praying for her. The Lord showered
her with His love, and He even gave her a word of wisdom regarding
what His plans were for her, if she would diligently pray and follow
Him. Suddenly, her countenance changed and so did her attitude
towards us, and she went to the back of the shop! She did not come
out for the rest of the time we were there, and another lady
continued to serve us.

When I asked the Lord about this incident the next morning, He
showed me that she would tell this story to all the tourists who came
into the coffee shop. They would feel sorry for her and give her a
large tip. She was using this to manipulate people! When she told us
the story, the Holy Spirit, in His great mercy, truly ministered to her,
and the fear of the Lord came upon her. She felt ashamed of her
conduct and hid! I learnt an important lesson from this: When we are
ministering to someone, we must listen to what the Lord says to us,
and not let ourselves get carried away in the moment! We have to
discern the motives of people, while still having compassion on them.

The Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the
faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
(1 Timothy 4:1, NASB).

31

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether
they are from God. (1 John 4:1, NASB)

Not all revelation comes from God, and certainly not everything that
appears spiritual is from the Holy Spirit! Whenever we gain insight
into what is taking place in the spiritual realm around us, our first
response should always be prayer. This is as simple as asking the
Holy Spirit for guidance. Sometimes, the gift of discernment is a sure
inward 'knowing' or having knowledge about something or someone.
It can often be a warning from God. When we sense pride,
perversion, occultism, or any other form of evil, we will feel
uncomfortable. Even though you may not know exactly what is
wrong in a situation - with a person, or their message - you will sense
danger and recognise the warning to be on guard.

True discernment is always birthed out of a personal, intimate

relationship with our Heavenly Father. As we get to know God
deeper, we experience His love more, and we are more readily able
to recognise when He is at work and understand what He is doing.
Spending time in worship, in the Word, in His presence and learning
to listen for His direction, will result in you experiencing growth in all
the gifts of the Holy Spirit!

In 1 Corinthians 12:10, Paul refers to 'distinguishing between spirits'

(or 'discerning of spirits' in the NKJV) as a spiritual gift that God
gives to Believers in order to recognise lying spirits and to identify
deceptive and erroneous doctrines. Paul also warns us that when
the gift of the discerning of spirits is not being exercised in the
church, distortion of the truth occurs.

We can pray for a heart of discernment, as the Psalmist did in

Psalm 119:125 - I am your servant; give me discernment that I may
understand your statutes. The more you grow in your love for, and
knowledge of, God’s Word, the more discerning you will be.

The gift of discernment operates on three levels:

a) It gives understanding of the realm of darkness – the working
and strategies of the devil.
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
32

b) It gives understanding of the realm of the Kingdom – the

working and purposes of God's angels and heavenly beings.
c) It gives understanding of the motives of people in the natural.

What the discerning of spirits is not

1. It is not natural intuition. Everyone, at one time or another, may
have had an intuition concerning what was about to happen.
Natural intuition is not the manifestation of the discerning of
spirits, but rather the promptings of our own spirit
(Romans 8:16).

2. It is not the ability to psycho-analyse others. The ability to

examine or treat a person or their behaviour using
psychoanalysis is not a manifestation of this gift, nor is it what is
meant by it.
3. It is not merely the ability to discern between right and wrong
The ability to discern between right and wrong is mainly the
result of our spiritual growth in faith and in the Word
(Philippians 1:9; Hebrews 5:14).
4. It is not the ability to find or point out faults in the lives of others.
There are many people who specialise in finding fault in others
and claiming the inspiration of the discerning of spirits!

One of the main purposes of the gift of discernment is to discern

the authenticity of all the other gifts.

Discernment of spirits
It is important to know exactly what kind of spirit is present in any
given situation: Is it an angel, or a demon; is it the Lord, or is it the
selfish flesh?

1. Acts 5 – Peter with Ananias and Sapphira – the true motives of

their hearts were exposed by this gift. It was the selfish flesh that
manifested.
2. Acts 16:17-20 – A woman was following behind Paul and his
fellow labourers for days and making proclamations that they

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

33

were the servants of God. Although what she said was true, the
spirit by which she said it was a demon. The Apostle Paul
discerned a spirit of divination in the girl and cast the demon out.
3. Acts 8:18-23 – In the case of Simon the sorcerer, Peter saw that
he had bitterness in his heart. This too was the manifestation of
the selfish flesh discerned by the gift of discerning of spirits.

2. GIFTS OF POWER

a) The gift of faith (1 Corinthians 12:9)

Testimony - impossibilities: A friend with a photography business
experienced a breakdown of her computer while she was editing a
video series. She had a deadline, and finding the right computer to
meet her specific needs was not easy! The morning after the
breakdown had occurred, I awoke with the words, 'She will get it on
Friday' in my mind – clear as daylight! When I told her this, she said
that all the companies she had contacted (even online ones) were
out of stock for at least the next ten days! There was no way a
computer with her exact specifications would arrive two days later!
BUT GOD! Two days later, a store contacted her to say that a
computer with her exact requirements had somehow arrived in their
shop, and she could collect it the following day, Friday! We rejoiced
in the Lord and gave Him much praise! His word in our hearts and
minds is YES and AMEN! She was able to complete her work and
meet her deadline by the supernatural grace of the Lord.

The gift of faith manifests as a sudden surge of absolute inner

certainty, making our hearts rock-solid and unmovable, and enabling
us to believe for a miracle with confidence and with no shadow of
doubt. It quickens a boldness within our hearts that as we act or say
something in the name of the Lord Jesus, it shall certainly come to
pass (Acts 4:31). This gift often works together with the other gifts
of power – the working of miracles and the gifts of healing.

34

What the gift of faith is not

• It is not saving faith – This is the faith that enables a person to
believe on the Lord Jesus (Ephesians 2:8) and is the faith
essential for our salvation (Romans 4:4-5).
• It is not general faith – This is the common faith imparted by God
when a person is born-again (Romans 12:3). As you study and
meditate on the Word of God, you grow in faith.

The gift of faith comes from the Lord. It is beyond ourselves - our
capacity or abilities. The gift of special faith is not imparted to all, but
only as the Holy Spirit wills. When the gift of faith is in operation,
what is said will ultimately come to pass.

Examples of supernatural faith in the Bible

• Romans 4:18-19 – Abraham believed in God's promise to be the
father of nations. (This only manifested in his old age!)
• Daniel 3:17 – Daniel's friends were saved from the fiery oven
through their supernatural faith.
• Daniel 6:16–17, 22 – Daniel trusted God to close the mouths of
lions. Through the gift of faith, you will be kept alive in times of
trouble.
• Numbers 13 – Moses sent spies into the enemy territory. Joshua
and Caleb had faith that God would give them the land,
regardless of the giants in it. They saw all the positive things. The
gift of faith will expel the darkness and make possibilities
apparent. The spies who did not share their faith saw the
situation differently and answered Moses accordingly
(Numbers 13:28-33).

b) The gifts of healing (1 Corinthians 12:9)

We read of the gifts of healing in 1 Corinthians 12:9. It specifically
says 'gifts' of healing, which indicates more than one type of healing,
so what does it mean?

Definition: The 'gifts of healing' is 'charismata iamaton' in the Greek.

It means the supernatural endowment or power imparted by God to

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

35

work a healing of diseases and sicknesses without natural means

(see Mark 3:15).

Healing is one of the manifestations of the love of God. It is written,

"Behold, I will bring it health and healing; I will heal them and reveal to
them the abundance of peace and truth" (Jeremiah 33.6). Healing was
a vital part of Jesus' ministry. He taught His disciples to follow His
example and to heal the sick also. It should be an ordinary part of our
lives and ministries, too!

This spiritual gift is closely related to the gifts of faith and miracles.
All spiritual gifts are to be exercised in faith, but the gifts of healings
involve a special measure of it. This gift is interesting in that there is
no guarantee you will always be able to heal someone. It is subject to
the sovereign will of God, as all spiritual gifts are.4

What the gifts of healing is not

• It is not natural healing – There is a natural ability in the body to
heal itself.
• It is not healing through the medical profession – We also praise
God for medical science and the breakthroughs it has made, but
this is not what is meant by gifts of healing.
• It is not mind over matter – Nor is it the power of suggestion, as
some Christian groups propagate. Ignoring a real sickness or
refraining from mentioning a sickness out loud, does not mean
you don't have the sickness; neither does it cure it! True biblical
healing faces the matter head-on! It acknowledges it, takes
authority over it and speaks healing to it!

Examples of the gifts of healing

The gifts of healings manifest primarily in the following ways:

1. Healing of the soul: Psalm 147:3 - He heals the broken-hearted

and binds up their wounds. The Holy Spirit will address a specific
pressing heart issue in someone's life, and after prayer, they are
released from that burden – it might be oppression, heaviness,

36

depression, fear, anxiety, etc. This aspect of healing through the

Holy Spirit opens a door to share the gospel. It addresses the
soul aspect or emotional state of a person.

Testimony: A friend of mine ministers in hospitals. She once

encountered a young mother with her newborn, who had just
been diagnosed with cancer. The mother was devastated. My
friend felt led to pray specifically for the mother. She asked her -
this is important, please take note - 'May I lay hands on you when I
pray?', and the mother agreed. She put her hand on the mother
and prayed a simple prayer. The next moment, the mother
gasped for air, and it was as if something had left her body! My
friend knew that something had taken place in the heart of the
mother - the shock and the trauma had left her! She had a
physical experience of the presence of the Lord! My friend
explained to her that, as she had laid hands on her as mother, she
could likewise lay hands on her baby and pray for healing. My
friend shared the gospel with her, and she was completely open
to listen!

2. Healing of the body: Matthew 9:35 - Then Jesus went about all the
cities and villages […] and healing every sickness and every disease
among the people. This is the healing of a physical ailment -
whether small or great - as the result of natural causes, an
accident, etc.

Testimony: Once when my husband and I were in transit in an

airport, we decided to have a quick meal. We saw our waiter
limping and asked him what happened. He said that he had hurt
his foot in the gym that morning. We asked if we could pray for
him and he agreed. When he had his break time, we went
outside and asked if we could put our hands on his ankle and he
agreed. (It is always very important to ask the person respectfully
if you may touch them. Also, do not make fancy prayers in a loud
voice so that everyone can hear you, but be gentle and kind in
what you do). We prayed and then asked him to put weight on
his foot. He said that it was better but not completely well. We
prayed again, and when he put weight on it again, he started
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
37

jumping up and down exclaiming, "It is healed! It is healed!" This is

the thing: If someone is healed, you cannot tell them to behave!
They are filled with joy! He admitted to us then that he had
become backslidden from the Lord, and we prayed with him
some more, and we encouraged him to share his testimony with
others.

3. Healing from demonic oppression: Luke 4:39 - So He stood over

her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose
and served them. This is when a physical condition manifests in
the body, but its origin is demonic affliction or infirmity. When
the person is released from the oppression of that spirit, the
sickness and physical after-effects of the oppression will go,
either immediately or within a short while and will result in
physical healing as well.

Testimony: After a meeting, a lady came forward for prayer. She

suffered bad sores on her hands that just wouldn't go away. She
had seen many doctors, and while medication helped for a while,
the sores always returned. I remember clearly the moment we
started to speak to the sickness and command it to bow its knee
to the Lord Jesus. She bent over immediately in a very unnatural
way, and she was not herself at all! We understood that this was
an evil spirit tormenting her, and we prayed into the matter. The
demon was cast out, and the Lord delivered her by His Holy
Spirit - remember it is the Holy Spirit who does the work. She
was set free, and she started crying and giving thanks to the
Lord!

4. Healing resulting from the forgiveness of sins: Mark 2:5 - When

Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are
forgiven you." If someone has an unresolved issue of
unforgiveness in their heart towards another, it is common to
find that it influences their physical body over time. When
forgiveness is granted, the physical condition either disappears,
immediately or over a short period of time.

5. Healing for the glory of God: John 9:2-3 - And His disciples asked
Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was
born blind?" Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents
sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him." This
passage can easily be misinterpreted, but sometimes, healing
takes place at a specific moment in time to bring extraordinary
glory to the name of the Lord.

6. Healing to lead many to salvation: Acts 28:8-9 - And it happened

that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever... Paul went into him and
prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him. After this
healing, other people on the island with diseases also came to
receive healing, and they got saved!

How to flow in this gift?

Before you minister to anyone who is ill, ask the Lord to fill you with
a special portion of the love of Jesus – it is a special portion of love.
When His love fills us, you will have compassion on people like never
before, and healing will start to flow from your heart and prayers.
Having compassion can be described as feeling someone's pain or
sickness as if it were your own (Mark 1:41). Love releases God's
presence, and healing can start to flow.

Testimony: One day, my husband and I met with a couple for a cup
of coffee. The lady had had surgery on her arm, and the desired
healing from the operation had not manifested. I laid my hand on her
arm (still in its cast) to pray, but instead of prayer coming from my
mouth; I started crying! I felt so much love for her! It was as if I could
feel the Lord Jesus feeling her pain! It was the most precious
experience I have ever had in praying for someone for healing! Most
of the prayer was just tears and praying in the spirit. After some
minutes, joy came over us, and it was as if the heaviness from the
burden of this prolonged healing also broke! That day, I tasted
something of what I now understand Jesus feels when His children
suffer and go through hard times. The compassion and love He has
for us is impossible to describe in any language!

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

39

Jesus was crucified and suffered because of love. He was mindful of

every person across millennia - their sickness, pain, etc. - and He
died for them all! You need to cry, to have tears flow freely for those
in need, in trouble, in tribulations; you need compassion, and then
the healing will flow. It will just flow! The foremost fruit of the Holy
Spirit is love – this releases the presence of God.

c) The gift of the workings of miracles

(1 Corinthians 12:10)
Definition: As with the gifts of healing, this gift is more properly
translated as 'workings of miracles'. The phrase 'the workings of
miracles' in Greek is 'energemata dynameon'. This means 'operations
of power', or 'energizing of powerful works'. The gift of the workings
of miracles is a supernatural endowment imparted by God to work a
miracle by which natural laws are altered, suspended or controlled.
Whenever people see the true evidence of a miracle, it captivates
and moves their hearts to become open to the message of the
Gospel of the Kingdom.

Examples from Scripture

• Miracles in creation: Joshua commanded the sun and moon to
stand still, so the army could complete the fight to overcome
their enemies (Joshua 10:12). The normal times for the setting
and rising of the sun and moon were suspended.
• Miracles regarding natural laws: Elisha caused a sunken iron axe-
head to rise up from the Jordan River (2 Kings 6:5-7).
Gravitational force had no power to keep it at the bottom of the
riverbed. Another instance is when Jesus walked on water. The
gift of faith worked a miracle (Matthew 14:25-32)!
• Miraculous provision: The Lord Jesus provided the disciples with
a net full of fish when they let down their net at His instruction
(John 21:6-8, 11).
• Multiplication of food: The Lord Jesus fed thousands of people
with just one little boy's lunch of five loaves and two fishes. The
disciples even gathered up twelve baskets of leftovers when the
people had finished eating (Matthew 14:17-21; Mark 6:38-44;

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

40

Luke 9:13-17; John 6:5-14)! Evangelist David Hogan tells a

wonderful story of how God has multiplied food supplies when
they go out on outreaches to remote areas.
• Instant miracles: Most of the healings which the Lord Jesus
worked were instantaneous (Matthew 9:2; Mark 1:40-42, 2:3-
12; Luke 11:14). An instantaneous healing is a miracle. Among
the many instantaneous healing miracles which the Lord Jesus
did are:
i. Healing a man with a paralyzed hand (Matthew 12:10-13).
ii. Healing a deaf mute (Mark 7:31-35).
iii. Healing a blind man at the Pool of Bethesda (Mark 8:22-
25).
iv. Healing a crippled and bent woman (Luke 13:11-13).
v. Healing a man born blind (John 9:1-7).
• Creative miracles: The Lord Jesus worked many creative miracles
(Matthew 15:30-31; John 9:1-7; Luke 22:50-51).

3. GIFTS OF COMMUNICATION/UTTERANCE

a) The gift of prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10)

The gift of prophecy is the most important gift in this category.

1 Corinthians 14:5 - I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more
that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who
speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may
receive edification.

Definition: The gift of prophecy is the special ability that God gives
to members of the body of Christ to receive and communicate an
immediate message of God to people - to a group or individual -
through a divinely anointed utterance.

What the gift of prophecy is not

1. It is not the ability to preach powerfully – It takes time to prepare
a message for preaching (1 Timothy 5:17), but prophesying
requires no preparation. We can be inspired and anointed by the

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

41

Holy Spirit while preaching, but the utterances are not

supernatural, as they are when we prophesy.
2. It is not just inspired preaching as mentioned here: Preach the
word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke,
exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching (2 Timothy 4:2).
3. It is not astrology or fortune telling or foretelling the future.
4. It is not for guidance, such as seeking advice from witch doctors,
sangomas (traditional healers), soothsayers or diviners.

Gift of prophecy and the office of the prophet

It must be emphasised that the gift of prophecy is different from the
ministry or office of a prophet. All Spirit-filled Believers can
prophesy, but that does not make them prophets. The ministry or
office of a prophet includes flowing in all the gifts of the Holy Spirit,
and is very different than the gift of prophecy to edify, exhort and
comfort.

Women and prophecy

There are many questions about women and ministry. Can women
have the gift of prophecy or are they excluded from it? The Bible
talks of women who prophesied, and even some who were called
prophetesses, for example:

1. Miriam, the older sister of Moses (Exodus 15:20).

2. Deborah, who was a judge over Israel (Judges 4:4).
3. Huldah, who was enquired of by King Josiah (2 Kings 22:14;
2 Chronicles 34:22).
4. The prophet, Isaiah's, wife (Isaiah 8:3).
5. Anna, a New Testament prophetess (Luke 2:36).

We also know that Elizabeth, John the Baptist's mother, prophesied

when she was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41-45), Mary, the
earthly mother of the Lord Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit,
prophesied (Luke 1:46-55) and Philip's four daughters prophesied
(Acts 21:8-9).

There are many examples of men as prophets, such as Moses, Elijah,

Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Daniel, etc.
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
42

What is the purpose of prophecy?

Prophecy is designed by God to:
a) Strengthen the church (1 Corinthians 14:3)
b) Encourage the church (1 Corinthians 14:3)
c) Comfort the church (1 Corinthians 14:3)
d) Instruct the church (1 Corinthians 14:31)
e) Convict unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:24)

Prophecy touches the church at its point of need. It is based on

revelation: The revelation of God's love, care and desire for His
people to be built up. It should never be misused to criticise or abuse
the church.

The gift of prophecy can manifest through

1. The Holy Spirit – 2 Samuel 23:2; Jeremiah 1:9; Acts 19:6, 21:11.
The Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and touched their
tongue/mouth to speak His words.
2. Evil lying spirits – 1 Kings 22:22; Isaiah 8:19-20; Matthew 8:29;
Acts 16:17-18. Mediums and wizards uttering whisperings and
mutterings, evil spirits crying out.
3. The human spirit – Jeremiah 23:16; Ezekiel 13:2. Sharing
thoughts from their own hearts as prophecies from the Lord.

We need the gift of the discerning of spirits to know whether a

prophetic word is from the Lord or not. Not every prophecy spoken
over you is from the Lord! It can come from someone's mind, heart
or personal desires and ideas of what they want to see happen in
your life. Remember, it is a sin when we prophesy from the flesh!

b) The gift of diverse tongues (1 Corinthians 12:10)

The gift of diverse tongues and the gift of interpretation of tongues
serve the purposes of God's kingdom. Neither the person who
speaks a message in tongues nor the person who interprets is
controlling what he is saying, meaning that he does not premeditate
what he will say. It is the Holy Spirit who gives the utterance.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

43

Acts 2:4 - And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

"The Gift of tongues is the supernatural ability to speak to others and/or

to God in a language or utterance never learned by the speaker." (Dr. Bill
Bright, Campus Crusade for Christ, USA).

There are at least 30 verses referring to tongues in the Bible, most of

which are in the New Testament. Praying in tongues is speaking to
God in the spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2). It edifies the person praying
(1 Corinthians 14:4) and brings glory to God (Acts 10:46). Praying in
tongues publicly may also bring glory to God in the ears of
unbelievers (Acts 2:11).

It is not possible with our natural minds to understand fully the work
of the Holy Spirit, but the following testimony is the most fascinating
I have yet heard regarding speaking in tongues. It demonstrates
clearly how the Holy Spirit can overcome language barriers for the
sake of the gospel:

Testimony: It is told that two missionaries were reaching out with

the gospel into a remote area, where Tibetan monks reside and
practice meditation. The area is guarded by monks and not just
anyone can enter the area. As the missionaries arrived at the
secluded area with their material, they spoke to the guard at the
gate, only to find that he could not understand their dialect of the
language at all! Having travelled quite a distance, they were at a loss
as to what to do. They prayed, and the Holy Spirit prompted one of
them to start speaking to the guard in tongues. To their great
surprise, as he started to speak in tongues, the guard nodded with
his head! He continued to speak in tongues for a few minutes, and
the guard opened the gate and let them in! The two missionaries
were very surprised! They knew they had spoken in tongues, but it
was evident that the guard had heard them speak in his own
language! They were able to enter the area and minister Christ to the
monks there.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

44

Testimony – from English to a mother tongue: One night during a

training session with students from different nations, I taught on the
subject of prayer. After the session, a lady came up to me saying,
"Thank you for presenting the class in Afrikaans (her mother tongue)
tonight. It made so much more sense to hear it in my own language". I
smiled at her and said, "You know that I spoke English, do you not?
There are students here that can only understand English!" She looked
at me surprised, realising that I would never speak her mother
tongue in a room of people who can only understand English! We
both knew a miracle had happened! From my mouth to her ear, the
Holy Spirit had interpreted what I had said in her mother tongue to
her!

What the gift of diverse tongues is not

1. It is not the common gift of speaking in tongues –When a person
is baptised in the Holy Spirit, this utterance is the new covenant
birthright of every born-again Spirit-baptised Believer. This is
used by a Believer to speak mysteries to God
(1 Corinthians 14:2) and to pray in the spirit (Jude 1:20).
2. It is not the natural knowledge of other languages – It is not a
linguist's natural gift or ability to learn and converse in many of
the different languages of this world. When a person speaks in
tongues, he or she has no knowledge or understanding
concerning what they are speaking.

The meaning
The phrase 'various kinds of tongues' in Greek is 'gene glosson',
meaning 'different kinds of tongues'. The Greek word, 'gene', means
'different varieties' or 'different genres'. What are these 'varieties' of
tongues?

1. Ordinary gift of tongues – This is your prayer language. In

1 Corinthians 14:18, Paul says that he speaks in tongues more
than anyone else. He does not mean that he spoke in tongues
while in Church or in the gathering of the saints more than
anyone else; he meant this is how he spoke to God when he was
alone with Him.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

45

2. Diverse kinds of tongues of this world – Someone speaks in

tongues, but the hearer hears what is spoken in their own
language (Acts 2:6).
3. Diverse kinds of tongues of the angels – The Bible is silent on the
language angels speak, except for this one verse:
1 Corinthians 13:1.
4. Gift of tongues to edify the church and be a sign to unbelievers
(1 Corinthians 14:21-23).

c) The gift of interpretation of tongues

(1 Corinthians 12:10)
The message in tongues is given by the Holy Spirit, and the
interpretation is given by the Holy Spirit. Both come bubbling forth
from the Holy Spirit through the mouths of Believers. You are
neither speaking nor interpreting from your own mind or heart.

Definition: The word 'interpretation' here is from the Greek

'harmeneia' meaning 'explanation' or 'full interpretation'. It is the
ability, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to convey a
message in a language everyone can understand.

What the gift of the interpretation of tongues is not

1. It is not a naturally learned ability to interpret the different
languages spoken on earth.
2. It is not a general interpretation – It works together with the gift
of various kinds of tongues.
3. It is not word-for-word translation – It may be longer or shorter
than the original message in tongues.

When you pray in tongues to the Lord in your personal prayer-life,

you do not need an interpretation of tongues. You are praying to the
Lord. However, in the church, when a word in tongues is brought,
there must be an interpretation so that everyone can understand the
message the Lord is saying (1 Corinthians 14:13, 27).

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

46

When a person speaks in tongues, they may be:

1. speaking to the Lord, communicating the secrets of their heart
(1 Corinthians 14:2),
2. edifying themselves (1 Corinthians 14:4),
3. praising, glorifying and magnifying God (Acts 2:11, 10:46),
4. interceding through the help of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26),
5. exhorting, edifying, comforting or rebuking someone
(1 Corinthians 14:4, 22-25),
6. or the Almighty God, Himself, may be speaking directly to the
person who is speaking in tongues. This would manifest as the
person himself speaking, but it will sound more authoritatively.
Someone with the gift of interpretation of tongues will be able to
interpret the message in all of these instances.

It is the sincere prayer of my heart that the Lord, through the

powerful work of His Holy Spirit, will encourage your heart to go out
with all boldness in sharing the gospel; not holding back, but boldly
praying in the spirit and ministering the love and compassion of the
Lord Jesus on the Cross, His death and His resurrection to a world in
need of hope and a future!

WHAT TO DO AND SAY, WHERE AND WHEN

Perhaps you do not yet feel confident to teach or train others to share
the gospel in a practical way. Why not use this book, and the
accompanying videos on the www.jwipn.com/pray-and-go website,
to share with others during a Home Group (or similar) meeting? You

another regarding what you can do to take the first step in sharing
Christ with someone.

The highest form of spiritual warfare is evangelism – Pastor

Adebanjo Oluwadare

Testimony – accident turned into an appointment: One day, I was

on my way to record a series of radio interviews for the upcoming
month. I decided to stop at our local shopping mall to have a quick
coffee with my husband. When I arrived, there was a big commotion
just across the way from the restaurant. I learned that an accident
had just taken place and one of the staff members in the shop
opposite from us was hurt. Things did not look good. Running back
and forth, we tried everything possible to save the life of the lady
who had been injured, but we quickly realised that the impact was
fatal. Even if a fully equipped medical team had been on site, it
would not have been possible to save her life. We watched as she
slipped away within 15-20 minutes. When she passed, the area was
secured.

As I walked out, people wanted to know what had happened. I felt

the Holy Spirit suddenly came over me with great boldness, and for
the next few minutes, I was able to address the matter of life and
death, and the choices we make for or against eternal life. The
people who had gathered were in shock at the news of the lady's
passing, and an opportunity was presented to share the gospel
boldly and unashamedly with all present. I closed by saying, "Please
do not go to bed tonight unless you have considered your life. Are you for
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
48

or against the Lord? Even if you do not believe in God, please consider
Christ today. You do not know how and what your life will be. Please
remember this lady and her sudden death".

I left to do the radio recordings, and what an opportunity it was to

share this story and the gospel in those recordings! I knew that the
Lord had permitted me to be at the right place at the right time for
His glory, and for people to hear how much He loves them. I knew
that, if we would cry out to the Lord on a daily basis to share Christ
with someone on His heart, He would have us speak life and hope
into hopeless situations. He would position us to be at a certain
place at a certain time, so people would have hope in Christ.

When I saw this lady passing, I realised that our days are numbered
and that we do not know the sum of them. So teach us to number our
days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12). Her days had
come to an end, and whether she had made a decision for Christ
only eternity will reveal. One thing I do know, if she was not right
with God, she did not have time to make right with Him! When the
cabinet toppled, she was struck unconscious immediately, and she
never regained consciousness.

We do not know the number of our days, and there may not be time
to forgive someone, to make right with someone, or to make right
with God. That is why spreading the message of Christ is so
important! Somehow, sharing Christ must become more than only
informative to us. In one way or another, if we cry out to God, He
will help us to do what we must do.

This quote caught my eye recently:

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

49

We may not all be able to do what Billy Graham did, but we can do
what we can do, and there should be no negligence found in us. Like
I said, the Holy Spirit in us is the Evangelist; we only have to train a
listening ear and an obedient heart, and He will create opportunities,
like he did for me that day. In a few minutes, I was able to share the
gospel with numerous people in an impactful way, which they will
not forget easily.

Did you know that almost 90% of Christian ministry, such as

television and radio shows, are done by Christians for Christians?
Something must shift in how we do ministry! It must start to include
how to reach those who are unsaved and unreached. We can no
longer view evangelism as 'something someone out there with a big
ministry does'. We have to embrace the commandments of Christ in
Scripture to trust God and to be alert to the opportunities the Holy
Spirit points out to us on a daily basis to share Christ! This is the
purpose of Christ's death. He died so we can be healed, yes; but He
also died so that we can demonstrate the power of healing through
the Holy Spirit to the unsaved, so they will believe our God is a
LIVING GOD and give their lives to Him. This is the Gospel of the
Kingdom!

If you have a desire to only do the will of God in your life, this is a
wonderful starting point! Yes, we have specific callings on our lives,
and we fulfil them with all the strength the Lord gives us, but we
cannot be negligent in sharing Him in everyday normal life!

Choices, choices…
In this process of life, we have to remember, God is a God of love,
but He is also a holy God! He is so pure that He cannot look upon
sin. Should He do so, His holiness would consume everything that is
not holy. Therefore, Jesus came in the flesh; He became a Son of
man – a pure Man – whose blood was pure and undefiled. He died
on the Cross and spilled His life-blood, so it can cover yours, mine
and everyone else's sins.

When God our Father looks upon us now, He sees only that holy
covering! When we die, and that covering is not found on us, what
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
50

we have chosen will become our immediate eternal inheritance! If

you have chosen life in Christ, you will have eternal life in Christ, but
there is absolutely no way that you will be with Christ in heaven, if
you have not chosen Him! If someone keeps on delaying this
decision and something happens to them (like what happened to the
lady), they will certainly have no time to choose God and to make
right with Him. It will be forever too late!

He is coming for us…

Jesus has promised us that He will come back and raise all Believers
who have passed away from the dead, as He was raised from the
dead. In an instant, we will receive new bodies - an eternal body like
His - and we will rule and reign with Him for all eternity.

1 Corinthians 15:52 - …in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the

last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

There is a whole future to be lived with Christ after we die and are
resurrected by Him at His return. This is our eternal hope! We do not
live and die and that's the end (which so many believe). We have a
soul, and it is alive forever and ever!

Job 33:28 - He will redeem his soul from going down to the Pit, and his
life shall see the light.

Psalm 34:22 - The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, and none of
those who trust in Him shall be condemned.

Proverbs 8:36 - But he who sins against me [wisdom] wrongs his own
soul; all those who hate me love death. (Proverbs 9:10 - The fear of the
LORD is the beginning of all wisdom).

Mark 8:36 - For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world,
and loses his own soul?

We will either be alive in Christ, or outside of Christ. If you have

chosen Christ, you will be with Christ and live with Him forever. If
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
51

you chose against Him or did not make a choice at all, your soul after
physical death will be separated from Him forever! According to
what you choose, you will receive.

Perhaps you are thinking, this is too intense for me! You are right! It
is a matter of life and death! It is very intense! There is a constant
fight going on in this world. That fight is intended to drain life out of
you and me – out of our bodies, out of our souls and out of our
spirits! That is the main fight that is going on – to bring you to a
place where you let go of God and Christ, or to bring you to a place
where you become offended at Him because of something you
cannot understand; or to bring you to a place where you reject Him!

Don't be fooled - the enemy has always been accusing us before

God (Job 1:11), but he was thrown out of heaven once and for all!
Now, he often accuses God before us! He puts thoughts in our
minds, such as God is not for you, or God is against you, or a God of
love will not do this or allow that! This has always been his strategy! As
a result, so many souls have become lukewarm, plodding on through
daily life.

If this is true of you – if you have grown cold in your heart towards
God – please renew your commitment to Christ. Secondly, renew
your commitment before the Lord to cry out for the souls of your
family, friends, colleagues, etc. Testify to them, as the Holy Spirit
leads you, so they will all have the opportunity to understand this
matter of life and death clearly. Do not be quiet. Do not become
reluctant. Do not fall into unbelief. Do not give up labouring in
prayer for their souls day and night!

More ideas for outreach

Church: Make an appointment with your pastor and share what the
Lord has been teaching you. Be humble, and adopt the right attitude
towards your leadership as you share with them. If there is no
platform in your Church at present to equip Believers to reach out,
witness and share Christ in everyday life, please ask the Holy Spirit
to provide an opportunity to share your ideas with the Pastor to

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

52

make such training available. Ask for permission to start a group in

your Church to equip Believers to share the gospel.

Hospital - babies: You may be surprised to learn that many mothers

about to give birth, do not have anything for their babies!
Sometimes, they do not have even a set of clothes for the baby! I
know of a ministry that started an outreach they call, 'Bless a Baby':
They go to hospitals with bags of pre-packed baby necessities. The
mothers are overwhelmed to receive this gift, and it opens an
opportunity for the ministry team to hold the newborn baby and
pray over its life. They establish contact with the mother and share
the care and love of Jesus for her and her baby.

Using disabilities: One day, I went to tea a friend on her birthday.

My friend had been born blind, and we sat next to a family in the
restaurant, one of whom was due to undergo a very complicated eye
surgery the following day. If the operation was not successful, she
would lose the sight in her eye. My friend leaned over and asked if
she could pray for her. She was so surprised that a blind person
would want to pray for her operation to be a success! After praying
for her, the family started asking questions, and the Lord gave us a
wide open door to share Jesus with them! On this day, I learned that
we should never view a physical impairment as a hindrance to
sharing the gospel, but rather as an opportunity!

Hospital - recovery ward: Another friend was recovering in hospital

after she had had a mastectomy. She absolutely radiated from the
spirit of joy which was upon her life, and while she was in hospital,
she was a tonic to everyone in the ward! People came and went
from her room, and she enquired about each and every one, despite
her own pain. She sang Christian songs, she shared with people, and
she prayed for everyone! She was a fountain of life, and she had
absolutely no fear in her heart! When I asked her why she was doing
this, she said, "When someone is in hospital, this is an opportunity for
them to hear the full truth. They can reject it, but they have a lot of time
to think here, so give them something to think about!" Should it happen
that you end up in hospital, for whatever reason, ask the Holy Spirit
to show you how you can share the love of Christ with those in your
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
53

room and the hospital personnel. Everything which happens in our

lives can be turned into an opportunity for us to be used by the Lord
for His glory!

Business opportunities - car wash: On our way to a meeting, my

husband and I stopped to have our car washed. As we drove into the
car wash area, there were no other cars and we were helped
immediately. I stood speaking to the manageress, asking her how
business was. She replied that they were worried because they had
had no clients for the whole day. I asked her whether she would be
open for me to pray with her, and she agreed. We prayed a very
simple prayer together, and my husband and I left for our
appointment. When we returned an hour later, we could not believe
our eyes! There were cars everywhere! When the manageress saw
us, she ran up to us and could not stop crying and giving thanks for
the prayer earlier! She was open right then, and we could speak to
her about the goodness of God. She knew that God had heard our
prayer, and she could not stop testifying to her colleagues of what
had happened!

Business opportunities - cosmetics shop: One day, I went into a

cosmetics shop to look for a specific product. I noticed that the
assistants were standing around idle, and I picked a conversation
with the manageress. She told me that they had had almost no
business that day, and this had been the case for almost a week. I
said to her, "Don't worry, I will pray". I started praying by myself whilst
browsing, and after a few minutes, when I went to pay, I was fourth
in the queue! I motioned to the manageress and asked, "What
happened?" pointing to the row in front of me. She replied, "I don't
know," and she couldn't stop smiling! I was able to share with her
that God answers prayer like this, and I encouraged her to consider
reviving her life with God. I told her that when prayer comes from a
sincere, humble heart, the Lord always answers us!

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

54

Business opportunities - difficult staff: One day, I lingered in a

coffee shop as I awaited my appointment. As I entered, I saw that
only the manager was there and no other staff. I asked her what was
wrong. She said that the supervisor was a very rude individual, who
had a habit of targeting female staff with unsavoury comments. No
one wanted to work when he was on duty! I told her that I would
pray about it. She just smiled and went her way. About two weeks
later, I was there once again. I had just sat down when she came to
me, her face beaming. She said, "I was thinking of you the whole night
last night. Karma had its way"! "Why?" I asked. She explained that the
supervisor had been fired the previous day, and she hadn't even had
to report him! I told her that I had prayed for the situation, and I had
asked the Lord for the supervisor to become kind-hearted and
change his ways, or to remove him if he wouldn't so that the female
staff could be protected from his comments and behaviour. I said to
her, "This was not karma. I want you to know that this was Jesus Christ
working on your behalf". She looked at me and said, "I can see what
you say it is true". Unfortunately, she was called away, but the
conversation has started, and it can continue another time.

The Lord can use you to pray for people in their businesses,
whatever the situation. Make use of every opportunity! When
people tell their stories, promise to pray for them and be faithful to
do so. Sometimes, we only have a few moments to share something
with someone. Then, we need to pray that the Holy Spirit will
multiply our efforts and minister to them.

Other times, we have a few minutes, and then we need to listen

carefully to what the Holy Spirit wants us to share to meet the need
of that person. It should never be about us trying to prove something
to them, or giving them our life story - no one wants to be a captive
audience for two hours!

Then, there are times when we have enough time to share, and the
Lord is very gracious to allow us sit down with someone and have a
deep conversation with them and answer their questions.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

55

Keep your message about Christ simple! When you speak to a non-
believer, they may have heard about Jesus, but they won't
understand deep theological things. Stick to witnessing and
evangelising. Witnessing meaning telling what Jesus did for me and
evangelising meaning telling them what Jesus has done for them, and
can do for them. When you have more time, tell them about Jesus
returning again and coming to make all things new and establish His
eternal kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven; and that those who
choose Him will reign with Him forever!

There are many more stories to share of how the Holy Spirit worked
with us, as we stepped out in faith to speak to someone, than I can
remember. I cannot even recall times when nothing worked out or
there was no result! We must always remember, though, to be wise
in everything, respecting others in our speech and remaining
attentive to the fact that the 'impossible' can happen at any moment!

Likewise, we must always be sensitive to the Holy Spirit in terms of

the gift of discernment. Sometimes, a person is not 'open' to hear
anything about the gospel at all! When you discern this, don't try to
force something; you will do harm than good.

Sometimes, the Lord will lead you to go to a certain place to look for
opportunities to share Christ. On other occasions, He will tell you not
to go to that same place! HE KNOWS WHY. Perhaps on that day,
someone will be present who will jeopardize the work, and you will
be exposed for what you are doing. Always listen to what Holy Spirit
says, especially when you are in a closed nation. It is important to be
bold and not to be afraid, but at the same time, you must listen
carefully to what Holy Spirit shows you.

Be bold, be strong and courageous – you will be surprised how the

Lord can use you!

Chapter 5

THE ROLE OF PLACING AND DISTRIBUTING

MATERIAL IN EVANGELISM
The Lord led our ministry team to create a number of modern-day
tracts, the size of a business card, addressing issues, such as the fear
of death, unforgiveness, wanting to commit suicide, looking for the
meaning of life, etc. These have been distributed in schools with
great success! Please download them for free from our
www.jwipn.com/pray-and-go webpage. You can print and distribute
them, as the Lord leads you.

Maybe you are saying right now, "Distributing tracts is old-fashioned,

and I do not want to waste my time and money doing that"!

Did you know?

1. If just 1000 people put out 50 tracts per week, 2.6 million
tracts would be distributed in just one year!
2. If just one person got saved from every 1,000 tracts
distributed, 2,600 souls would be won for Christ in just one
year!
3. If just a few minutes were spent each day by each person,
this many tracts would be distributed!

"As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." (John 20:21).

The most extraordinary true story I have ever heard regarding the
use of tracts, is the Frank Jenner Story:

During a time of testimonies at Lansdowne Baptist Church,

Bournemouth, England, in the summer of 1952, Rev. Francis Dixon
heard two very similar stories from two British sailors who had never met
each other before. Both sailors, while on shore leave in Sydney, were
approached by a man who asked the question, “Young man, if you were
to die tonight, where would you be, in heaven or in hell?” In the course of

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

57

time, they both returned home, but the encounter with this mysterious
man on George Street, Sydney, left such a deep impression on their
hearts and minds that they both sought spiritual help when back in
England. Later, they both became Christians, Francis Dixon himself
having the pleasure of leading one of the sailors, Peter Culver, to Christ.

Shortly after this, Francis Dixon departed with his wife, Nancy, for his
first preaching tour to Australia and New Zealand. Deeply fascinated by
the coincidence of the two stories of the sailors, and recognising that he
was heading to the land where these events had happened, he resolved
to investigate the matter further. Who was this unconventional street-
evangelist? Why had he chosen to act in such a way? And how many
other people had been impacted by his ministry?

It didn’t take long to get some answers! The tour commenced in

Adelaide, and while preaching in a large hall one night, Francis Dixon
related the stories of the two sailors from England. At this point, their
host (who happened to be sitting next to Mrs Dixon, and to whom they
had just been introduced) waved his arms around, jumped up, and said,
“I’m another! I’m another!” This man, Murray Wilkes, later told them
that, during the war, the evangelist had approached him while he was
running to catch a tram, and that he had given his life to Christ in an
army barracks two weeks later!

“Young man, if you were to die tonight, where would you be, in heaven
or in hell?”

While in Perth, Francis Dixon again shared the story of the two sailors.
This time, a man approached him after the talk to say that he, too, had
become a Christian as a consequence of the single sentence uttered by
the evangelist on George Street, Sydney. What’s more, he had gone on to
lead Christian Endeavour for Western Australia!

And so, Francis Dixon reached Sydney determined to meet the man
behind these stories. On arrival, he related the stories to local Christian
worker, Alec Gilchrist, and asked if he knew the evangelist. “I know him
well”, said Alec. “His name is Frank Jenner. Like me, he works with the

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

58

Forces, and he is a sailor himself. He worships at one of the Christian

Brethren assemblies in Sydney”.

Later, in Frank and Jessie Jenner’s humble town-house, as Francis Dixon

told the four stories of the men who had responded to the evangelist’s
simple question, Frank Jenner, with tears in his eyes, fell to his knees and
prayed, “O Lord, thank You for tolerating me”. After a time of prayer,
Jenner confessed that after speaking to 10 people a day for the previous
16 years, this was the first time he had heard of lasting results. “You
know, I never heard that anyone I ever spoke to had gone on for the
Lord. Some made professions of salvation when I spoke to them, but I
never ever knew any more than that”, he said to his guests.

Those who knew Frank Jenner testify that his nature was generous and
warm, that he quickly inspired trust in others, and that his life was
marked by persistence in prayer.

The circumstances of the Second World War – particularly the horrific

images of Japan after the atomic bombs – so heightened Jenner’s sense
of urgency that he felt it necessary to confront others directly about their
standing before God. Not that this came easily: Jenner struggled to
overcome a gambling habit acquired as a sailor, and he suffered
persistent health problems throughout his life. He was so aware of his
weakness that before each encounter on George Street, he silently
prayed, “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength”. He first
coined his now-famous question in 1937 and over the years probably
asked nearly 100,000 people!

It is no surprise, then, that his influence extended far beyond Australia.

Just a month after meeting Frank Jenner, Francis Dixon spoke at a
Methodist Church in Keswick, England. After the service, a man who
worked for ‘Mission to Mediterranean Garrisons’ approached Mr Dixon
and said, “I, too, was challenged by Mr. Jenner, and now I am in a soul-
winning work myself”. Four years after this, while ministering to
missionaries in India, Mr Dixon found another convert from George
Street, Sydney. She had responded to the evangelist’s challenge and
offered her life for service in India. In all, Francis Dixon knew of

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

59

10 people who had come to Christ as a consequence of the influence of

Frank Jenner. I wonder how many more are there?

Frank Jenner, in his own way, and to the embarrassment of some

Christians, got to the heart of the issue: He directly challenged sailors
about their standing before God. His simple question is not a formula for
us to copy, but his life is a wonderful testimony of how God can use
those who remain faithful to him.5

History of using tracts in evangelism

Before the printing press, tracts took a lot of time and energy to
produce, but early Christians were willing to pay the price because
writing was an effective way to spread the truth. Since then,
Christians have continued to use tracts to teach doctrine, as well as
salvation. Some were extremely influential, such as Wycliffe’s short
tracts and treatises, which were ordered to be burned, but before
they could be destroyed, his writings had planted seeds - seeds that
helped spark the Reformation! One of Wycliffe’s students
introduced the tracts to his friend, John Huss. After reading them,
his life would never be the same, nor would hundreds of others!
Huss would forever be grateful for Wycliffe’s role in the 'happiest
and most momentous event' in his life.

Though thousands of tracts are printed, the potential of just one

tract could mean millions in China hear the gospel that have
absolutely no other way to ever know about God. A warrior of hate
may turn the world upside down with love and forgiveness. An
atheist may acknowledge his Creator. The focus is not to be on the
method-distributing tracts, preaching, building personal
relationships, etc. - the emphasis is Christ, and His Holy Spirit is the
One who draws men to Himself. To his students, Spurgeon urged,
“Let us save men by all the means under heaven.” 6

60

Why should a Christian use tracts? Simply because

God uses them! He used a tract to save the great
missionary Hudson Taylor, as well as innumerable
others.

According to Billy Graham, “Nothing surpasses a tract for sowing the

seed of the Good News.” A Christian book relates the true story of a
diver who saw a piece of paper clutched in the shell of an oyster.
The man grabbed it, found that it was a gospel tract and said, “I can’t
hold out any longer. His mercy is so great that He has caused His Word
to follow me even to the bottom of the ocean!” God used a tract to save
this man.

Why should Christians use tracts?

Christians should use tracts, simply because God uses them! This
alone should be enough incentive for a Christian to use tracts to
reach the lost, but there are other reasons, too. Here are a few:

• There is no certain time, or an amount of time, required when

distributing tracts.
• There are tracts for every occasion, for every need and for every
type of person.
• Tracts can be distributed by anyone, regardless of age, sex, race
or education.
• Tracts provide an easy way to 'break the ice' or 'open the door'
to witness.
• Tracts eliminate the problem of forgetfulness or uncertainty of
what to say.
• The message, since it is printed, can be taken home, re-read and
studied.
• Tracts can be passed along and can, therefore, be used over and
over again.
• Tracts can be mass distributed easily.
• Tracts are inexpensive and can be handed out liberally.
• Tracts speak to individuals when they are 'ready' (people don't
read them unless they want to).
• Tracts can find their way into people’s homes when we can’t.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

61

• Tracts don’t get into arguments; they just state their case!

Missions advocate, Dr. Oswald J. Smith said:

“The only way to carry out the Great Commission will be by the means of
the printed page.”

Charles Spurgeon said:

“When preaching and private talk are not available, you need to have a
tract ready…Get good striking tracts, or none at all. But a touching
gospel tract may be the seed of eternal life. Therefore, do not go out
without your tracts.” 7

Placing material still remains one of the easiest and simplest ways to
do something if you feel uncertain of yourself or unable to speak to
someone. I recently heard of a lady, almost 80 years old, who places
1000's of tracts every year by attaching them to a cookie! She sees
this as her full-time ministry. This is how she gets opportunities to
share Jesus. She prays for people's needs, and her home is always
open for them to come for prayer. She has time to speak to people,
and because of her age, many listen and are not offended.

Tracts are really proven to work! History records the testimony of

many who were saved through tracts:

- George Whitefield, a preacher of the Great Awakening, was saved

by a gospel tract. After reading it he wrote, “God showed me I must be
born again or be damned".

- Hudson Taylor, the great missionary to China, was also saved by

reading a tract.

- Greg Koukl, founder of Stand to Reason, said that 'God even used a
gospel tract' as the tool that led him to Christ. He has stated that
'some brave soul' put it in the bottom of his grocery bag while he
was at the cash register!

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

62

- Joey Hancock of the American Tract Society said:

"Fifty-three percent of all who come to Christ worldwide come through
the use of printed gospel literature. If we really care about the eternal
salvation of those around us, how could we not carry tracts everywhere
we go?"

– Charles Spurgeon said on the use of tracts,

"I well remember distributing them in a town in England where tracts had
never been distributed before, and going from house to house, and telling
in humble language the things of the kingdom of God. I might have done
nothing, if I had not been encouraged by finding myself able to do
something . . . [Tracts are] adapted to those persons who have but little
power and little ability, but nevertheless, wish to do something for Christ.
They may not have the tongue of the eloquent, but they may have the
hand of the diligent. They cannot stand and preach, but they can stand
and distribute here and there these silent preachers".

– Scottish evangelist, Robert Murray M’Cheyne said, "The smallest

tract may be the stone in David’s sling. In the hands of Christ it may
bring down a giant’s soul".

In conclusion, this quote:

I look upon the giving away of a religious tract as only the first step for
action not to be compared with many another deed done for Christ; but
were it not for the first step we might never reach to the second, but that
first attained, we are encouraged to take another, and so at the
last…There is a real service of Christ in the distribution of the gospel in
its printed form, a service the result of which heaven alone shall
disclose, and the judgment day alone discover. How many thousands
have been carried to heaven instrumentally upon the wings of these
tracts, none can tell. (Unknown).

Testimony - retired businessman: I met Uncle Wynand when he was

in his 80's, and he had been distributing tracts since his retirement.
He would go to different shopping malls and get a trolley (for he
would never walk with a walking stick), put some tracts in the trolley
and stroll from car to car to distribute them. He was warned several
times by security not to do this, but he would just smile, and the next
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
63

day he would be back! Twice, he was called into management, was

warned and was fined. He just smiled, paid the fine, and the next day
he was back! After some time, management let him be. Whenever
our ministry team would sit down with him to rest, he would ask
everyone around him whether they knew Jesus, and if He was their
Saviour.

Everyone would listen to him respectfully due to his age. He always

had a Bible or a tract in his pocket to give to someone. He did this
every day for all the years he could still drive. When he was no
longer able to drive, someone fetched him once a week to go out
and distribute tracts. I wonder what his reaction was when he
arrived in heaven! The Lord uses everyone mightily who is willing to
do whatever they are able to do, no matter their ability, their age or
their mobility. All that is needed is a willing heart!

Testimony - retired attorney: Uncle Derick was a retired attorney

and a respected man. After his retirement, he went around sharing
the gospel. He was well known for the particular jacket he would
always wear, like the sort you would use for camping with many
pockets! Every pocket in his jacket was stacked with tracts and small
New Testament Bibles. He had a very interesting approach: He
carried a tin of peppermints in one of his pockets. He would sit down
on a bench somewhere and wait. When someone came to sit next to
him, he would offer them a peppermint and start a conversation.

After a short while, he would give them material and, if possible, pray
for them for whatever they needed. He shared the gospel like this
for many years, going out every morning until midday. Later, he
could only manage to go twice a week. All he could do was to sit in
public areas because of his age. He often told us of leading as many
as 15 people to the Lord in one week! Uncle Derick was available,
willing and prepared. I truly believe that because of his availability to
be in a certain place at a certain time, the Holy Spirit sent people to
sit beside him and hear about Jesus!

Benefits of using tracts

• They are small, and you can carry them with you everywhere.
• You can pray and ask God to show you the right place and the
right time to give the right tract to the right person in your
everyday life! (Without the power and presence of God in our
efforts, they will be in vain. The opposite, however, is true: The
simple action of handing over a piece of paper can change the
world!)
• Tracts can provide an opening for us to share our faith. As we
hand people tracts, we will be able to notice whether they are
open to a conversation about God or 'spiritual things'.
• Those who are timid or shy to talk to someone can still place a
tract for others to find.
• People will usually take anything handed to them without
objection in a busy area.

Be wise when using tracts

1. Keep to the law as far as possible: Some places may restrict the
placement of any kind of 'advertisement', and you could end up
getting a fine. (Although we have shared the testimony of Uncle
Wynand, we encourage you to share or place tracts in areas that
do not have restrictions).
2. Leave tracts where they can be found but won't be wasted.
3. Do not place tracts somewhere where the wind can blow them
around, and they become a nuisance to others to clean up. When
placing a tract on a car, for example, do not put it under the
windscreen wiper but rather slip it into the window on the
driver's side, close to the door handle, so they will see it when
they return to their vehicle.
4. Also, be mindful of the tract getting wet: When placing a tract in
a post box, for example, do not leave part of it sticking out.
5. Ask God to use you, and pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you
when placing a tract, so there will be much fruit on your
obedience.
6. Never force a tract on anyone, neither be rude if someone is
unwilling to take your tract, nor be discouraged.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

65

7. Smile and talk to people. Be friendly. An easy way to introduce

the tracts is to say, "Can I give you something to read?"
8. Do not leave a tract without a tip (gratuity). That is a poor
testimony!
9. Be sure that the tracts you use carry a clear message of the true
gospel. Do not use tracts that you have not studied yourself. It is
also important to familiarise yourself with the content of the
material you are giving out for people will lose interest if you
explain something to them from a pamphlet!
10. If possible, have the tract on your mobile device in digital format
as well. You can send it to the person, and this affords you the
opportunity to follow up with them.
11. Try to have material available in other languages as well. If you
do not have material in the language required, ask if you can
send the person something on their phone later.

You have to operate on God's agenda: Be at the right place at the

right time. In certain areas, there may be security guards and
cameras, which will significantly limit your freedom to do what you
wish. To be able to continue to do the work, you must act wisely, or
you may be forbidden in an area where you have previously seen
fruit.

Here are some ideas of where you can place tracts for people to find
them. Ask the Holy Spirit which of these places He wants you to use.
In each placement, be wise and be attentive to His leading.

Where to place tracts

1. Restaurants: You could leave a tract for your waiter along with
your tip (gratuity), or leave one on the seat for the next
customer.
2. Bulletin boards: Many shops, libraries, laundromats, etc. have
bulletin boards. (Take your own drawing pins in case there aren’t
any).
3. Doctors' rooms, clinics: Place tracts in the magazines on the
table in the waiting area, or place them openly, if possible.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

66

4. Accommodation: Caravan parks, back-packers, camping sites

and other overnight facilities. You can leave a tract in a drawer
or telephone book in a hotel, holiday resort or guest house.
5. Gyms/Health clubs: Place tracts in lockers.
6. Clothes shops: Change rooms and pockets of clothing.
7. Planes: In the seat pocket for the next passenger or airline staff
to find.
8. Trolleys: When you are finished shopping, leave one in the
trolley.
9. Remembrance places: A good place to leave a tract is at a wall
of remembrance, funeral home, cemetery, etc. As the Lord
directs you, place the tracts where the chance of them being
removed and destroyed is minimised.
10. Rest sites: Roadside picnic or resting areas, park benches,
seating in shopping malls and other public resting sites.
11. Rental cars: In the glove compartment of a rental car.
12. Library books: In a library book you return, or inside a book on
other religions in the library. Pray over each tract that it will
touch the heart of the person who finds it.
13. Public transport: Seating at depots and in buses, trains, taxis,
etc.
14. Restrooms: Such as at fuel stops, shopping centres, airports,
restaurants, etc. (However, be sensible: Don't leave tracts where
someone will not want to touch them or that could be
unhygienic).
15. Merchandise: Between the pages of books for sale, or in a
purse, backpack, etc.
16. Donations: Place tracts with things you donate.
17. Shelving: Leave tracts on magazine/newspaper racks.
18. Post boxes: Ask the Holy Spirit to show you which homes are
ready to receive tracts before you place them in post boxes;
don't just drop one at every house!
19. Counter tops: Look for spots where people are likely to go, such
as where a pen is attached or where information is listed.
20. Lifts (elevators): Attach one with Prestik to the inside of a lift.
21. Other public places: Laundromats, local supermarket, etc.
22. Windows: Display a tract in the window of a business (but
always ask permission from the business owner first).
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
67

23. Entranceways: The entrance to an office or church building. A

Believer may be reminded of someone they want to give a tract
to. Never underestimate such opportunities!
24. Staircases: Prop a tract up or lay it flat on one of the steps.
25. Helium-filled balloons: Who knows where it will land!

The list is endless! Be respectful and creative! Always pray for the
Holy Spirit's leading. The goal is for people to feel safe picking up
tracts, and for them to read it and keep it, so be mindful where you
place them. Always ask yourself, would I want to touch that? Avoid
dirty areas, such as near litterbins, for example.

Here are some ideas of where you can hand out tracts to people.
Always ask the Holy Spirit to whom you should give tracts and be
wise and attentive to His leading.

Where to hand out tracts

1. Airport: If you have a certain people group on your heart, you
can go to the airport at times coinciding with flights coming
from certain countries. Hand out material, or just stand there,
and pray for them to encounter the Lord Jesus on their journey.
People are almost always open to receiving a free gift when they
enter a new country!
2. Department of Home Affairs: Many people line up from early in
the morning to apply for their passport, new ID document,
submit a Death Certificate, etc. This is a captive audience!
3. Police station: People queue up at police stations to give their
testimony, get an affidavit, report a case, etc. This is a golden
opportunity for you to start a conversation with someone. Hand
out tracts to people who are waiting, and they may read them
then and there!
4. Doctors' rooms: Ask patients politely in the waiting room before
their appointment why they are there, how they are doing, do
they have a family, etc. Share your own testimony. Sick people
are often open to listen, as they feel vulnerable. Minister to

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

68

them by offering to pray for them and give them material to

read.
5. Hospitals: Ask the Lord to connect you to someone in authority
who works at a local hospital. Find out whether it would be
suitable for you to go and pray for patients during visiting hours.
Follow the right steps so that you gain access in a respectful
way. Many people have no one visiting them, and it is wonderful
if someone comes to talk to them. Enquire about their pain, their
situation, their operation and offer prayer. If you do this in the
right way, with a joyful heart, God will grant you favour to go
and pray for them outside of visiting hours. Always show the
greatest respect towards those working in hospitals and the
patients themselves. Serve them with a humble heart. You may
possibly be the last person who will share the gospel with
someone before they pass. I have spoken to people in a coma,
and they actually respond by blinking their eyelids or pressing
my hand, agreeing to what I pray for them.
6. Parades, festivals, and special events: Stadium sports events, for
instance.
7. Recreational sites: Zoos, picnic areas, beaches and other places
of recreation.
8. Daily walk: As you take your daily exercise, start a conversation
with someone and give them material, as the Holy Spirit leads
you.
9. Busy intersections and street corners, traffic lights, etc.
10. School gates: As learners come and leave the school, as well as
parents dropping off or collecting children (as is possible in your
specific nation or suburb).
11. Taxi ranks, train stations: At peak times – early morning or after
work.
12. Parking garages, tollgates: Give tracts to attendants as you pass
their booth.
13. Drivers: Taxi drivers, bus drivers, couriers, etc.
14. Attendants: Flight attendants, bellboys, room service, etc.
15. Social media: Send pictures of short gospel tracts via social
media.
16. Christian Radio Station: If there is one in your area, visit them
and enquire about the way they work. Ask whether you can
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
69

sponsor material to be placed in their reception area. You could

even serve on their telephone counselling line, or share some
excerpts from this booklet on air!

Using tracts in closed nations

When reaching out in a closed nation, the situation can be very
different to what you are used to at home. It is very important to
share guidelines with the team on how to share material and the
gospel in creative ways that will not compromise the mission or the
material you have in your storage/warehouse. If the secret police
discover a distributor of Christian material in such a nation, the
person will be interrogated. If they give in to the interrogation and
provide the location of the material, it can be a great loss to the
mission.

In such nations, you can leave information in a safe but obvious

place for someone to find easily, and by so doing, your continued
mission is not compromised in any way. However, never forget the
miracles God loves to do in closed nations! Many times, people have
had no option other than to carry Bibles and tracts openly, and they
and their material were invisible to the secret police and border
security! The greatest point of importance is continuous prayer!

Keep this in mind when distributing tracts

>> Safety of the distributor: Some areas in some locations are more
dangerous or risky than others. You have to pray and know from the
Holy Spirit when to go and when to leave. You can only enter these
locations by His leading. It may happen that you want to distribute
tracts in a place you have been before, but feel uneasiness. Wait
until there is a release. You may be being watched without knowing
it, and a trap could have been set to arrest or implicate you. You
have to listen to the Holy Spirit carefully.

>> Safety of the material for distribution: Do not carry all your
information or material on your person. If you are attacked, or the
material is confiscated, at least you will not have lost all of it.

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

70

>> Importance of a prayer team: It is important to have people at a

base or at home, who pray while a specific outreach is happening.
They can be tasked to intercede for the safety of the distributors and
the material, as well as for those who receive the information and to
pray for material not to be wasted or destroyed.

>> Follow-up: Be wise when giving out your personal contact

information. It may compromise your freedom to continue to do
outreach in certain areas in the future. However, it can be a 'life-line'
to people, so be discerning.

>> Two by two: Sending out people two-by-two is a biblical way of

distributing tracts, especially if it is ladies alone.

>> Confrontation: Always avoid getting involved into arguments or

confrontations during an outreach. It is not worth the while, and it
leads nowhere; certainly not to convicting someone of their sin and
them considering following Christ! Just step back and move on.

>> Feedback: One thing that will benefit others is to have feedback
after having gone out on outreach. Share stories…lots of stories!
Sharing mistakes can also equip us for the next session/outreach and
gives us a good laugh! A good laugh cheers the heart and encourages
it again. Being serious all the time can really make you feel
depressed, especially if someone rejects you when you approach
them.

Chapter 6

FACING OPPOSITION AND OVERCOMING

FALSE BELIEFS IN EVANGELISM
Not everyone will respond favourably to your efforts of sharing
Christ with them. Let us look briefly at some of the challenges you
may encounter when you share the gospel, and how you can
respond when you are rejected or when you face adverse situations.

Before you go out, meditate on a Christ-honouring way of

responding to opposition. In the heat of the moment, you may react
rather than respond. Have a 'game plan' so that you are not fooled
into taking the bait of the enemy. If someone bursts out in anger
towards you, for example, keep a calm expression and remain at
peace. Although you may you never see them again, the way you
responded and your calm demeanour will stay in their minds, and it
may cause them to think.

What do you do after they walk away? You can pray for them! Ask
God to lead them to others who will repeat the same message, or to
send others to them with the same message. They will eventually
come to a point where they realise 'something bigger is going on'.
Then, they will be ready to consider the message of salvation.

Now let's consider some ways of responding to when someone

disagrees with you or challenges you:

If someone says, "I completely disagree with you!" encourage them to

tell you why they feel that way. Let them share their story (or their
reasons for why they disagree). Usually, they have experienced a
prior 'disappointment' with God, or they have been treated unfairly
by someone who is a Christian (or a churchgoer at least). These hurts
must be treated with respect. Express how sorry you are that they
experienced this, and lead them to understand that this is not
behaviour fitting for a Believer. This gives you an opportunity to
explain what the right behaviour of a Christian should be, and you
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
74

can atone for the wrong they have suffered, if they will allow you, by
asking for forgiveness on behalf of the person who hurt them.
Usually, this calms them down, and they may even become 'open' to
you.

Testimony - confrontation: One day, a Jewish person confronted me

saying, "Jesus Christ is not really God, He is just a prophet. I will believe
(He is God) if you can prove that to me!" The Lord gave me a word of
counsel to speak to him about the book of Hebrews, and I asked him
whether he had ever read it, as it speaks a lot about the law and how
that relates to Jesus as God. He said he thought he might still have
an old Bible his schoolteacher had given him, and said that he would
definitely read that portion of Scripture. I also asked him if he
believed that a 'mere prophet or man' could raise someone from the
dead, if he were not God. He could not answer me, and I saw that
the Holy Spirit had already started to work in his heart! This is one
example of how the Holy Spirit helps us when there is a
confrontation.

Testifying to Christians
When you connect with people, they will usually tell you something
about themselves. Listen attentively, and then ask related questions.
During such conversations, it sometimes happens that the word of
knowledge drops in your heart concerning something. Often, there is
some or other kind of unforgiveness in their heart, and you can
speak to them about that. (Have a tract on unforgiveness with you,
which you can give to them as you part company.) Tell them of how
God forgives us as we forgive others, and how Jesus forgave those
who crucified Him on the Cross. Explain how important it is for us to
forgive unconditionally. Then, explain the gospel to them again from
this point of view with Scriptures. It is not always possible to take
out a Bible and look up verses when you speak to someone, so you
will have to know Scriptures on many topics by heart!

Testifying to non-Christians
Trust the Lord to strike a conversation with the person. As they
begin to tell you something, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

75

a word of wisdom or knowledge, which can serve as a connection

point. Usually, people will readily share a hurt they have suffered due
to someone's conduct. They might share about an illness or about
being in pain (have a tract addressing when someone feels
overwhelmed or is contemplating suicide to hand). Whatever the
situation may be, the Holy Spirit will show you what to do. If there is
sickness or illness, for example, share a brief testimony of how God
brought healing to you when you prayed. Then, ask if they would
mind if you prayed for them. People do not easily deny prayer.
Usually, the Lord heals someone on the spot, and their whole being
is changed! When this happens, use the next few minutes to share
the gospel boldly. For some, it will be the first time they have heard
it. For others, it may be the second or third time.

As is permitted by the Lord for their lives, you may or may not have
the opportunity to lead them to salvation on that particular day, but
they will know definitely that they have encountered the living God!
When there is a lot of favour, the Holy Spirit will prompt them to
invite you to come to their home and pray for their family as well. All
these things are possible!

Reactions of people in closed nations

As mentioned, reaching out in a closed nation can be very different
from what you are used to at home. If someone scorns you, it is
often because they fear being found out for having spoken to a
foreigner about Christ or perhaps they are being watched. Do not
worry when this happens; just continue to the next person. Praying
in the spirit quickly calms down your heart. In such nations, you can
put some information in a safe but obvious place for someone to find
easily, and this does not compromise the continuation of your
mission in any way.

False beliefs about evangelism

People have ideas about evangelism that are typical of the western
world, but not true biblically. If you asked a roomful of Christians
what evangelism is, you will most likely get many different answers
and points of view. However, there are some viewpoints that are

JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK

76

simply not true, and it is important to look at these, so you will be

able to answer such questions should they arise in your evangelising.

1. People do not want to talk about God

This is not entirely true. Most people are resistant to hearing you
lecture them or preach to them or to hearing of all they are doing
wrong; but those who are really searching for hope and meaning in
life, will be surprisingly open! You will find that most people are
actually open to spiritual things, if they feel safe with the person
talking to them. Those who are not Christians want many of the
same things Christians want: To be listened to and treated with
respect, for example. They have questions about life and death, and
if you talk to them without condemnation in your voice, they will
interact with you. Put yourself in their shoes; look for common
ground and start there!

2. To be kind and compassionate towards everyone is enough

There is a popular saying, commonly attributed to St. Francis of
Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”
There is actually no historical record that St. Francis said this, and
more importantly, it's not a complete view of what the Bible teaches.
In the Bible we read, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the
message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ”
(Romans 10:17, NIV). People can only respond to an invitation they
have received! The gospel message is an invitation from God to
return to the relationship with Him that every person was designed
to enjoy. God asks us to be a part of bringing that invitation to the
world. People will not know God wants to forgive them for
everything they have done, and that He offers them eternal life,
unless someone tells them! This means words as well as actions. If
the disciples did not share the gospel with the then-known world, it
would not have made its way to you and me! Someone had to share
the gospel with someone else, who in turn shared it with another
person, in order for you to believe! This is true for all of us.

3. You have to 'sell' the gospel to people

If you believe people don't really want to speak about God, it can
make you feel that sharing the gospel must be a 'sales pitch'. The
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
77

best way to avoid this is just to be honest and simple in your

conversation! Share your own struggles and tell of how God helps
you; don't come over as being 'better' than someone else.

4. God loves those who evangelise more

God loves us unconditionally (1 Corinthians 13). He does not love
you more or less, if you do or do not evangelise. It does, however,
gladden His heart when we obey His commandments (Mark 16:15),
and there are rewards for those who are faithful to do so
(1 Corinthians 3:13).

5. Evangelism is trying to win an argument

Shouting or yelling at someone to prove a point is not, and should
never be, the objective for sharing Christ! Telling someone they are
wrong and are going to end up in hell, will not move them! If this is
your stance, then sharing Christ is merely an accomplishment for
you, and your success depends on your own efforts. Such an
approach does not reflect the heart of God, and it can do a lot of
damage. The Holy Spirit must always be central in speaking of and
sharing Christ with others.

Chapter 7

EVANGELISM TIPS FOR MINISTRY TO

PEOPLE OF OTHER FAITHS

Do all paths lead to God?

The universal belief that all religions are fundamentally the same, and
that they follow different paths that all eventually lead to God, is
extremely popular but dangerously false! Jesus said in John 14:6, “I
am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through Me.”

The beauty of the gospel of Christ is not that it is one of many ways
man can be reconciled to God; but rather that it is the only way man
can be reconciled to God. This is what makes Christianity completely
different from every other religion – God gave Himself up for a
rebellious creation just so that, through His redemptive sacrifice for
us, He would be gloried in us!

Listening to the many opinions people have of religion can be

confusing and overwhelming. Therefore, it is extremely important for
every Believer to store up God's Word in their hearts, or they may
fall away from Christ. We are warned in Romans 12:2: Do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your
mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is
good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV).

Even if you are not good at memorising Scripture, it is amazing how

the Holy Spirit will remind you of verses you have read in any given
situation! Knowing Scripture is beneficial for your daily walk, but it is
even more crucial for sharing and explaining what you believe! Know
what you believe, why you believe it, and how to present that truth
effectively to others with gentleness and respect.8

Whether you walk the streets of a major foreign city or the streets
of your neighbourhood, you will encounter people of differing
beliefs. Worldwide, the majority of people are affiliated with a
religious conviction other than Christianity. According to
Matthew 28:18-20, however, the instruction of the Lord Jesus is
clear: We have to share the gospel with people from every nation.
What are some helpful guidelines when it comes to sharing Christ?

>> Have understanding: Much harm has been done by Christians

who are quick to speak, judge and condemn, in the belief that they
are doing the right thing! This has turned many away from ever
considering Christ! The fact is, people's beliefs are mostly tied to
their culture and way of doing things. In some nations, Christian
converts are cut off from their families completely. They may even
be killed for renouncing their former religious orientation. Keep this
all in mind when you share about Christ. Initial scorn or an
unwillingness to speak to you may come from fear rather than from
an unwillingness to listen to you or believe what you are saying. For
such a person, choosing Christ comes at a high cost (Luke 14:25-33).

>> Be respectful: Missionaries are usually trained to understand the

customs and culture in their mission field. This does not mean that
they compromise their Christian beliefs in order to relate to others.
However, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:22 that, 'to the weak I
became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to
all men, that I might by all means save some.' He understood the
wisdom of adjusting to different situations. People have reasons for
believing what they do; and they also have reasons for not believing
in certain things.9

>> Ordinary conversations matter: You do not need to have a

special skill or gift to share Christ. Only be sincere, honest, kind and
respectful. If a person does not want to talk about religion or God,
you will not persuade them by raising your voice or trying to force
them! Instead, respect their decision. Sometimes, a level of trust has

to be earned first before someone will open up. Frustration, anger or

any force from your side will only push them away. Be patient!

>> Share the actual gospel: Sharing the gospel does not mean in the
first instance speaking about hell, morality or the church. These
subjects are very important, but the important part of the message
of the gospel is that Jesus came to save sinners. People do not really
need convincing that they are sinners. You do not have to cite the
10 Commandments to prove to them how sinful they are, or what is
wrong in the world. Tell them, instead, what Jesus did on the Cross,
and how much He loves them! Most people have a sense that their
lives are not where they would like them to be. Speak to them about
what Jesus came to do, and why He came to do it. Put the focus on
Jesus. You will be surprised how many will listen!

>> Two ears and one mouth! Whenever we have the opportunity to
share Christ, we have a lot on our hearts to say in a very short time.
Remember, you are not giving a sermon or teaching; you are
focusing on having a conversation. Listen to them, listen to the Holy
Spirit, and follow God's guidance in every situation.

>> It takes time: Some people will be ready to commit to Christ

when you speak to them for the first time. However, for most
people, it takes a number of encounters with different people for to
be ready to make a final decision. If they have a lot of questions,
answer them as honestly as you are able to. The Holy Spirit can use
all these thoughts to minister to them even after the conversation
has ended.

>> Facing failure: We all make mistakes. There are times when we
fail to show kindness or be honest or authentic. Sometimes, we may
come across as impatient. Admit your faults and ask for God's
forgiveness. Then move on and reach out again.10

Experiences in reaching out in Muslim-majority

countries
The following notes were compiled by a missionary couple, who
worked in Afghanistan for a number of years. During this time, they
lived amongst Muslims and shared the gospel with them, as the Lord
provided them opportunities.

1. Context:
a) In Muslim-majority countries, Islam is the culture and nothing
else is tolerated. Both short- and long-term outreaches to these
nations are very important. All Christians should do at least one
short-term outreach to a closed nation to better understand the
culture and need for the gospel amongst these people.
b) In terms of long-term missions, you are not allowed to
evangelise, and need another way of sharing Christ (Lebanon
being the exception, although limited in some areas).
Missionaries enter closed nations under the cover of running a
small business, such as a Pizza outlet or hair and beauty salon, or
they teach English. Like-minded NGOs can assist missionaries in
this aspect. There may be a variety of job opportunities at such
NGOs, such as accountant, administrator, teacher, content
developer, etc.
c) To make long-term missions effective, it is important to live
amongst the people, i.e. in your own house with Muslim
neighbours and friends. In this way, you can engage them and
come to know their everyday struggles and points for prayer.
d) It is also very valuable, in terms of long-term missions, to wear
their clothes, use their taxis, buy your own groceries, etc.
Integrate yourself into the local culture.
e) Often, only local languages are understood (Arabic, Urdu, Farsi,
Dari, Lebanon English, etc.) Try as best you can to learn the
language spoken in the area where you stay.
f) In every area, you will encounter different types of Muslims,
ranging from radical, strict Muslims to very moderate, warm and
loving ones. Ask the Lord to help you minister to each one, and
to teach you to pray for them all.

2. Guidelines in the Muslim world:

a) Get used to the environment and culture before you go to live in
a closed nation for the longer term. Go on several short -term
outreaches first. Learn, see, hear, read and visit. Then, pray and
assess the situation: Will you, and your spouse and family, be
able to endure such a change in lifestyle? What will the long-
term impact be on your family for living in such a nation? What
are the Lord's specific instructions to you regarding a long-term
mission in a closed nation?
b) You can witness by your actions, daily living and building
relationships. Muslims are exposed to the witness of hundreds of
Christians, on a daily basis, listening to the conversations of
Christians or to Christian radio or television broadcasts.
Hundreds of little encounters over several years are what make
the difference and bring them to that final moment of accepting
Christ.
c) Testify of your personal Christian experience in private (one-on-
one conversations) in small groups or taxis. Tell your own story
of walking with Christ and witness of His love. Tell of how you
experience the Father’s love, your sin, repentance, forgiveness
and your personal relationship with God. Tell them also how you
experience the guidance and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They
have no comprehension to be able answer these aspects of the
Christian life.
d) Evangelise to those who are interested in hearing more.
e) Bible reading: Do not start Muslims interested in reading the
Bible in the book of John! They are completely opposed to the
use of alcohol in their culture, and the miracle of Jesus in John 2
of turning water into wine, may put them off before they start!
Be wise.
f) Love them: They have little or no understanding of concepts,
such as grace, truth, justice, etc. as the Bible portrays them. You
have to know how to explain each of these concepts, and how to
apply them with examples. Answer all their questions in love,
even if it may seem to you that they are trying to trick or
provoke you. There is no point in debating controversial issues;
your focus shifts then from the 'heart' to the 'mind'. Do not win
the argument but lose the soul!

a. Grace: Refugees are people in need. Show them love.

b. Truth: What Muslims understand about Jesus and
Christianity is very different from what Christians
understand. Be aware of the differences, and as the Lord
gives you opportunity, share wisely but clearly.
g) Know what the Quran (Islamic doctrine) says so that you are not
deceived by their flawed arguments when they quote from it.
h) Be informed by reading and studying what Muslims believe, their
culture, their way of thinking and reasoning, and how they feel
about Christianity. This will help you avoid unnecessary mistakes,
and give you access to Muslims to speak to them again in further
conversations.
i) When conversing with a Muslim, discern whether they are only
trying to convince you of the merits of Islam, or whether they are
genuinely seeking the truth. Are they internalising what you are
saying and responding to that, or are they merely pushing Islamic
arguments? Remember, they also want to turn you to Islam!
j) Do not discredit Islam or humiliate their way of thinking. For
example, the Arabic word, 'Takeyya', means 'to prevent' or 'guard
against'. The principle of Al Takeyya means Muslims are
permitted to lie as a preventive measure against anticipated harm
to one's self or fellow Muslims (Surah 3: 28). However, if the lie is
found out, it is to their shame. Their concept of sin is different as
well: Sin relates mainly to situations where honour and shame
are present - as long as you are not found out, you are 'free', but
when you are found out, it becomes 'sin' because of the 'shame'
of being found out! These differences are never to be ridiculed.
Instead, point them out, so they can observe them for
themselves.
k) Corporate prayer: If you are employed in a company in a foreign
nation, pray with your fellow workers, even if they pray to Allah.
When it is your turn, they will hear how you pray and how it is
different. The Holy Spirit will make them attentive to the fact
that you have a personal relationship with God in the way that
you speak to Him!
l) Megavoice: The Megavoice device is a small instrument that
contains Bibles and Christian material in different languages, and
it can be ordered from the Megavoice website. This allows
JERICHO WALLS INTERNATIONAL PRAYER NETWORK
84

Muslims to listen to the Bible on their own, but remember to

only give physical Bibles or a Megavoice (audio Bible) privately
for security reasons, and because it is a shame for a Muslim be to
found to have a Bible in their possession.

3. Start a conversation:
a) In Muslim-majority countries, foreigners often attract Muslims
because they are curious to know why you are in their country,
what you think of it, and they are very curious to hear you speak
their language! Therefore, dress to be seen, when required.
However, there will always be some that despise and scorn you
on the street, so be prepared!
b) Muslims love to talk about their faith! Ask them what they think
about Jesus. When they ask if you believe Jesus is the Son of
God (having a mother, only born in 3 BC, etc.), ask them what
they mean by 'Son of God'. Muslims have many different
misunderstandings of what the Bible teaches, especially about
Christ.
c) Do not be shy to demonstrate your faith openly. Show that a
follower of Jesus does not conform to their understanding of
what a Christian is (Western morality).
d) Challenge them on what they believe about Jesus. Jesus is the
Word of God in both the Quran and the Bible. Jesus said so
many more things than what is written in the Quran, though.
e) Ask about current events in their country and the world, and ask
how Islam views such events. Utilise this to share Jesus’ biblical
views after they have shared Islam's view. Know Scripture, so
you can read them a relevant chapter from Bible.
f) If applicable, ask them if they struggle with any kind of sickness.
Muslims love prayer, even in the name of Jesus! Offer to pray for
them.
g) Ask questions about the Quran/Islam, such as, "Why does it say
this (or that)?" then state what the Bible says on the same topic.
h) Use sport, like cricket, for example, as a starting point for
conversation.

4. Funds for reaching the unreached

Did you know that Christians give about 2% of their income to the
church or Christian causes? Of that amount, only 6% is spent on
supporting missions, and a mere 1% of that is spent on reaching the
unreached! The bulk of the church's income is spent inside the
church! What does your personal tithing look like? What is the
current budget your congregation spends on missions? These are
important questions to consider in prayer.

5. Equipping yourself to reach Muslims

a. BOOK: Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, by Nabeel Qureshi
This book gives an intimate look into a loving Muslim home. Qureshi
shares how he developed a passion for Islam before discovering,
almost against his will, evidence that Jesus rose from the dead and
claimed to be God. Unable to deny the arguments, but not wanting
to deny his family, Qureshi struggled with an inner turmoil that will
challenge Christians, Muslims and all who are interested in the
world’s greatest religions. It provides a deep, personal insight into
what it takes for a Muslim to become a Christian, and how it should
guide your friendship with a Muslim.

b. BOOK: No God but One, by Nabeel Qureshi

This book addresses the most important questions at the interface of
Islam and Christianity: How do the two religions differ? Are the
differences significant? Can we be confident that either Christianity
or Islam is true? Most importantly, is it worth sacrificing everything
for the truth? This book is a respectful and insightful investigation
from a person who was first a committed Muslim and then a
committed Christian.

Experiences in reaching out to atheists

A lot can be said on how to minister to people who see themselves
as atheists. Please watch the video at www.jwipn.com/pray-and-go
which explains the challenges involved in reaching out to atheists
with the gospel in more detail. You will discover how to answer
difficult questions, how to apply Scripture, and gain an
understanding of the reasoning of atheists.

There are many questions Believers ask in their interaction and

dealings with people who have chosen to become atheists after
having lived a type of Christian life. The reasons why they chose this
path vary for each individual, but it can be puzzling and traumatic for
Christian family members, and especially their spouse and children.
Here are some questions that may have arisen when you interacted
with someone who identifies as an atheist:

>> How do I handle someone who tries to provoke me into an

argument?
>> How do I approach someone who was a Christian (even perhaps
anointed in ministry) but who has fallen away from God?
>> What do I do if my spouse is an atheist (or became one after we
were married)?
>>How do I address our children not being raised with Christian
stories?
>> What questions should I ask an unbeliever on their deathbed?
>> Is it possible for a Christian who turned atheist to become
Christian again?
>> How do I address the phenomenon of Christian leaders who have
left the faith and have written material that claims God no longer
exists?
>> How do I minister to someone who is beginning to doubt their
faith? Someone who asking is God real? Where was God when…?

Experiences in reaching out to refugees

The video in the link below was compiled by compiled by INcontext
Ministries.11 It addresses matters, such as the challenges refugees
face and how they generate an income, and it looks at ways you can
build friendships with them and meet their emotional needs by
presenting the gospel. It also looks at how to address the situation of
refugees living in tent cities: Their challenges, sanitation, safe water
availability, etc., all of which are opportunities that can be utilised!
The third aspect the video addresses is how to reach out to refugees
who are fleeing from a war zone, who are 'in transit' from one
refugee facility to the next, until they reach their destination. These
scenarios really stir up a deep understanding of God's heart for the
destitute and for those on the run for their lives.

Experiences in reaching out to Hindus and Buddhists

The video in the link below was compiled by a young lady, who grew
up in an environment where she lived amongst both Hindus and
Buddhists. She came to Christ in her teens, and she immediately
wanted to share Christ with other Hindus and Buddhists. In the face
of much opposition, persecution and even attacks on her life, she
continues to share Christ boldly. In the video, she shares some basic
beliefs of the Hindu and Buddhist cultures, and she explains how you
can approach them with the gospel.
