1. You are flying a kite and have let out 80 m string. The kite’s angle of elevation with the ground is 40°. If the
string is stretched straight, how high is the kite above the ground?
2. An airplane climbs at an angle of 18° with the ground. Find the ground distance the plane travels as it moves
2500m through the air.
3. A tree casts a shadow 21m long . the angle of elevation of the sun is 51°. What is the height of the tree?
4. You are watching a fireworks display where you are standing 290 feet behind the launch pad. The launch tubes
are aimed directly away from you at an angle of 65° with the ground. The angle for you to see the fireworks is
40°.
5. A surveyor needs to find the distance BC across a lake as part of a project to build a bridge. The distance from
point A to point B is 325 feet. The measurement of angle A is 42° and the measurement of angle B is 110°.
What is the distance BC across the lake to the nearest foot?
6. You are designing a ramp where the horizontal distance is twice the vertical rise. What will be the ramp angle
to the nearest tenth of a degree?
7. The angle from the tee box to the green is 10° on a par 3, 185-yard hole as shown. How much higher is the tee
box than the green?
8. You are in a hot air balloon that is 600 feet above the ground where you can see Maris Rascal. If the angle from
your line of sight to Maris is 20°, how far is she from the point on the ground below the hot air ballon?

14. If the distance from a helicopter to a tower is 300 feet and the angle of depression is 40°, find the distance on
the ground from a point directly the helicopter to the river.
15. You are cleaning the gutters on your house, the gutter are at a height of 24 feet. If you have a 50 feet ladder,
what is the minimum angle the ladder can form with the ground? How far away from the house is your ladder?
16. An airplane is preparing to land at the airport, the airplane is flying at an altitude of about 1200 feet and is
approximately 13,700 feet from the touchdown point on the runway. What angle does the approach path make
with the runway?
17. The base of an isosceles triangle is 58 yards long. The altitude to the base is 80 feet long. What are the measures
of the base angles? What are the lengths of the legs?
18. A 50 ft pole has a support wire that runs from its top to the ground with an angle of depression of 75°. How
far from the base of the pole does the wire connect to the ground? How long is the wire?

is standing on a platform that is 25 feet off the ground. How fast is the audience member from the base of the
platform, if the angle of elevation from the audience member’s line of sight to the top of the acrobat is 27°.
27. Maria is at the top of a cliff and sees a seal in the water. If the cliff is 40 feet above the water and the angle of
depression is 52°. What is the horizontal distance from the seal to the cliff?
28. Vermon is on the top of a cruise ship and observe two dolphins following each other directly away from the
ship in a straight line. Vernons position is 154 meters above sea level, and the angles of depression to the two
dolphins are 35° and 36°. Find the distance between the dolphins?

29. An observer in a lighthouse is 69 ft above the water. He sights two boats in the water directly in front of him.
The angle of depression to the nearest boat is 48°. The angle of depression to the other boat is 22°. What is
the distance between two boats?
30. A surveyor wishes to find the width of a stream without crossing it. He measures a line CB along the bank, C
being directly opposite a point A on the farther bank, where angle ACB is 90°. The line CB is measured to be
98.25 feet and angle ABC to be 55°57′. How wide is the stream?
31. A flagpole broken over by the wind forms a right triangle with the ground. If the angle which the broken part
makes with the ground is 50°, and the distance from the tip of the pole to the foot is 55 feet, how tall was the
pole?
32. A closed-circuit television camera is mounted on a wall 7.4 ft above the security desk in an office building. It is
used to view an entrance door 9.3 ft from the desk. Find the angle of depression from the camera lens to
the entrance door.
33. A building is 16.3 meters from a television tower. From the top of the building, the angle of depression to the
base of the tower is 43.5°, and the angle of elevation to the top of the tower is 23.8°. Find the height of the
tower.
34. An engineer determines that the angle of elevation from her position to the top of a tower is 52°. She measures
the angle of elevation again from a point 47 meters farther from the tower and finds it to be 31°. Both positions
are due east of the town. Find the height of the tower.
35. Suppose that you are on a salvage ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Your sonar system has located a sunken Spanish
galleon at aslant distance of 68.3 meters from your ship, with an angle of depression of 27°52′.
a) How deep is the water at the galleon’s location?
b) How far must you sail to be directly above the galleon?
c) You sail directly toward the spot over the galleon. When you have gone520 meters, what should the

36. A boat is 23 miles due west of lighthouse A. Lighthouse B is14 miles due north of lighthouse A. find the bearing
of lighthouse B from the boat and the distance from lighthouse B to the boat.
37. A jet flew 140 miles on a course of 196° and then 120 miles on a course of 106°. Then the jet returned to its
starting point via the shortest route possible. Find the total distance that the jet traveled.
38. The bearing from Puerto Princesa to Naga is N 42°E. The bearing from Naga to Davao is S 48°E. A small plane
traveling at 60 miles per hour, takes 1 hour to go from Puerto Princesa to Naga and 1.8 hours to go from Naga
to Davao. Find the distance from Puerto Princesa to Davao.
39. A tree broken, down by strong winds, makes a right triangle with the ground. Its topmost part makes an angle
of 35° with the ground at a point 15 feet from its foot. How high above the foot of the tree is the break? How
high was the tree before it was hit by the wind?
40. From a point on the ground, the angle of elevation of the top of a pine tree is 36°. Twenty-five feet nearer the
tree, the angle of elevation is 70°. Find the height of the pine tree?

47. In a right triangle PQR, ∠𝑅 = 90°. A circle is inscribed in the triangle such that it touches all three sides. If the
triangles area is 150 square units and its perimeter is 60 units, a. find the radius of the inscribed circle and b.
the ratio of the area of the inscribed circle to the area of the triangle.
48. A ladder leans against a vertical wall such that it formed a right triangle with the ground. The ladder of 10m
long and reaches 8m up the wall. If the base of the ladder slides away from the wall at a rate of 1 m/s.
determine how fast the top of the ladder slides down the wall when the base is 6m away from the wall. B.) At
what rate the area of the triangle formed by the wall, the ladder, and the ground is changing at that moment.
49. A right triangle DEF has ∠𝐹 = 90°, 𝐷𝐸 = 13 and 𝐷𝐹 = 12. The hypotenuse DE is extended to point G such
that 𝐷𝐺 = 𝑥 forming a larger triangle DGF. a.) Find x such that the larger DGF is similar to DEF and b.) Determine
the perimeter and area of DGF.
50. Given a right triangle ABC with ∠𝐶 = 90°, the lengths of the sides satisfy the parametric equations 𝑎 = 2𝑚2 +
2𝑚𝑛, 𝑏 = 2𝑛2 + 2𝑚𝑛, and 𝑐 = 2(𝑚2 + 𝑛2 ), where 𝑚, 𝑛 > 0. Prove the triangle is a right triangle using these
expressions, b.) For 𝑚 = 3 and 𝑛 = 1, calculate the perimeter and area of the triangle.
