LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

Grade 3

I. Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 Identify and visualize symmetry in the environment and in
design,
 Create symmetrical designs using basic shapes,
 Develop the skill of visualizing and predicting symmetry in
various patterns.

II. Subject Matter:

Identifying and Visualizing Symmetry in the Environment and
in Design.
A. Reference: Mathematics 3- Teachers Guide pp. 260- pp.263
B. Materials: power point presentation, bond paper, Cut-out pictures
like butterfly, shapes, etc., chart, scissors, pentel pen and
masking tape.
E. Value Focus: Cooperation

III. Procedure:
A.) Preliminary Activities:
Prayer
Greetings
1. Review:
The teacher will ask the students what they have discussed from the last
discussion.
Tell if the pair of line segments are congruent line segments or not congruent
line segments.
Are you ready?

 No.1, Look at line segment T U and line segment V W are they congruent line
segments or not?
 No.2, look at line segments E F and G H. What can you say? Are they
congruent?

2. Motivation:
The teacher will present a song to the class. Class, I have here a song, Fly,
Fly the Butterfly. Are you familiar with this song?
Okay, let us sing this song together…

Fly, fly, fly the butterfly In the morning, it’s flying high In the meadow, it’s flying
low Fly, fly, fly the butterfly What was the song all about?
Very Good!
A. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Present a picture of a butterfly.

LINE SYMMETRY

The teacher will discuss about line symmetry

 A line of symmetry is a line that cuts a shape exactly in half. This
means that if you were to fold the shape along the line, both halves
would match exactly.

Present another example of symmetrical and not symmetrical design.

A. B.

Present another examples of symmetrical design.

Present another examples of not symmetrical design.

2. Group Activity
 The teacher will group the students into three groups. Each group
must observe the pictures and discuss if the pictures are
symmetrical or not symmetrical.

Present the important rules for group activity.

Let the pupils read one by one.

Group I
Put a / if the object shows symmetry and X if does not.
Group II
Look at the line symmetry in each object.
Write yes if the line is a line of symmetry. Write no if it is not a line of
symmetry.
Group III
Put all symmetrical letters under column A while not symmetrical under
column B

3. Processing the Activity

The teacher will ask the students or the group if what are the figures
that are symmetrical and what are not.

4. Analysis
The teacher will show some example about symmetrical line and
discuss it to the students, and ask them what they have observe.

Present another figure then, ask the learners what they have observed.

5. Generalization
The teacher will ask the students again if what is symmetry.
6. Application:
Draw a line of symmetry in each object to
To show symmetry.
IV. Evaluation:
Identify the following if it is symmetrical or not symmetrical. Write
S for symmetrical and NS for not symmetrical on the blank.
1. 2. 3.
_____________ ____________
_________

3. 5.

____________ ____________

V. Assignment:
Draw at least five symmetrical figures then show a line of
symmetry.
