Introduction Page 1
LASER 2000 XY V3.02 Introduction

The measuring method used is based on the application of highly sophisticated measuring
technique and provides reliable measuring values of highest accuracy.
Data are measured without contacting the surface of the measuring object. This is done by
sending out light from a laser diode which shines on the measuring object thus casting a
shadow on the receiver, a CCD line. The image information is then evaluated by an integrated
signal processor. Measuring data acquisition remains precise even with vibrating measuring
objects due to the extremely short exposure time of only 0,2 µs.

The device is equipped with a serial interface, so it can be connected to any SIKORA display
unit like for instance the REMOTE 2000 (Option). Additionally, there is a Profibus interface, a
Set-up and Dianostic Interface and an Analog Output.

Introduction Page 4
LASER 2000 XY V3.02 Installation and Start-Up

1. Installation and Start-Up

1.1 Requirements for Device Installation

1.1.1 Place of Installation

The measuring device can be installed at any position of the line.

You may place the measuring head at a point in the line, where the cable has just passed the
extruder crosshead and its core is coated by the insulation material. In this case the automatic
control will work without delay. When positioning the measuring head in this way, please consider
that the warm value will be measured and that you will have to set the warm nominal value.

When installing the measuring head at a place where the cable has left the cooling trough, the
cold value will be measured. In most of these cases, delay time will then be too long for control.
If your line runs rather fast, i.e. the distance from the extruder to the measuring head is passed
in less than 3 seconds, normal control can be applied. If your line is slower, take care to slow
down control automatically or manually. The device offers using function SPEED* -which takes
line speed influence into consideration- for correcting the control function.

Besides, care has to be taken to keep the test object dry, as drops of water may cause measuring
errors resp. error messages.

At the installation site, temperature should be kept in a range from +5°C - +50°C, maximum air
humidity for the LASER 2000 XY is 95% (without condensation).

The measuring head stand shown in Fig. 3 (Option) consists of an aluminum profile bar
mounted on a base and a holder for carrying the measuring head. If the floor is uneven, we
recommend you first fix a level steel plate on the floor onto which the stand can be mounted.
The holder allows optimum adjustment of the measuring head, height and distance can be var-
ied continuously and can be modified any time, e.g. for maintenance.

For measuring head dimensions see Fig. 2 and pages 15ff.

Under certain circumstances, installation of compressed-air rinsing may be useful. This is the
case if there are special conditions at the measuring head installation site like steam when
measuring next to the extruder, smoke and soot originating from talcum dust flying about, or fine
oily mist next to drawing dies.
When operating the measuring head under these difficult conditions we recommend rinsing the
measuring head with cleaned compressed air. The respective kit is available as an option
(U 500 INLINE 2000 Druckluftspülung / Compressed-Air Rinsing).

Components which are available optionally - like for instance the REMOTE 2000 - are installed
at the planned positions. The maximum distance is 1000 m.
Refer to the respective manuals.

1.1.2 Voltage Supply and Grounding

The LASER 2000 XY can be supplied with 90...265 V AC, 50-60 Hz. The power consumption
amounts to approximately 15 VA.

When designing the device, special attention has been laid on preventing power-line inter-
ferences. Additionally, when installing the device we recommend that you use only those power
lines which correspond to radio interference regulations.

If in doubt, you better provide a separate power line from your main distributes directly to the
device and do not connect any other loads to it.

Please note: The maximum permissible current which is carried by the LASER 2000 XY power
plug must not exceed a value of 6 A. Select your fuse rating accordingly and not greater than 10 A.

1.1.3 Signal Lines

When installing the signal lines, please note they can pick up interferences that can influence
device performance. A separate installation away from power lines and at sufficient distance to
magnetic stray fields will guarantee reliable device performance.

Please note that the reference potential of the electronics (GND*) is insulated from the protec-
tive earthing (earth, grounding, housing) and is connected to it in the right place.

1.2 Mounting

1.2.1 Connecting the Mains Supply

Connect the power plug, see also figure 1, External Wiring.

1.2.2 Mounting the Measuring Head

Check carefully all parts after unpacking them.

Make sure that the measuring head stand has been installed correctly.

For measuring head LASER 2050 XY, refer also to the instructions given in Fig. 3 p.5,6
Measuring Head Installation Procedure.

Please note the measuring head has to be placed correctly:

Especially when mounting one of the measuring head types LASER 2050 XY or LASER 2200

3. Care and Maintenance

The device does not need any maintenance. What we recommend is that you take care the
openings for the light are kept clean and free of any kind of dirt. To make sure, check the
openings regularly, for instance after each production.

If necessary, clean the measuring openings. For cleaning, use only the cleansing tissues pro-
vided for this measuring head. Do not use anything else! Please avoid touching the openings
with your fingers.

When cleaning the measuring openings, proceed as follows:

• Remove measuring object from measuring head.

• Open measuring head housing:

Unfasten the screw located in the middle of the black
cover. Remove the cover from the measuring head.

• Clean measuring openings:

Wipe openings with cleansing tissue.

• Close measuring head housing:

Replace the black cover and fasten screw.

If you run out of cleansing tissues, you can order more at our service department. Only apply
those brands of tissues approved by us. Do not use just any kind of cleansing tissues, as some
of these may leave residue. See sample provided in flap of manual cover.

Important: Always keep the measuring head housing closed with the black cover, as otherwise
the device will get dirty!

For checking the LASER 2050 XY measuring head accuracy there are special precision test
probes available. In this case proceed as shown in Fig. 7 Test Probe Application Procedure.

Data transmission is subject to two time-out criteria:

1. Maximum permissible delay time between two characters within a telegram: 200 ms.
If this criterion is fulfilled, the receiver waits for a new telegram start.
2. Maximum permissible delay time between receiving the last character of a request tele-
gram and sending the first character of the according reply: 500 ms.
If this criterion is fulfilled, the sender reacts by sending a request telegram again.

4.3 Profibus

The device interface supplies the voltage needed for the profibus load resistance. The load
resistance itself is not integrated. In order to keep a reliable system we recommend installing a
terminating element, like for instance the Siemens "Abschlußelement für Profibus" Order No.
6ES7972-0DA00-AA0. If an actor or sensor is used as terminating element for the bus system,
removing this element will not remain without consequences.

Menu: Analysis / FFT/SRL Parameter

Use this page to set the parameters used for executing the analysis functions FFT (FFT : Fast
Fourier Transformation) and SRL (SRL : Structural Return Loss) .
After all values have been set, transmit them using button SEND to the measuring device. You
may read out the actual values from the measuring device using button RECEIVE .

General Remarks Concerning the Applicaton of Analysis Functions FFT / SRL:

Use these functions to directly obtain information for optimizing your production process.

During the production of high quality cable production, continuous controlling of cable pa-
rameter in regard to periodic irregularities is mandatory. By analysing for instance the
diameter measuring values from a LASER 2000 measuring head with the Fast-Fourier-
Transformation (FFT), periodically occuring irregularities during cable extrusion can be
detected early. Periodic variations of the diameter value may be caused for instance by
such irregularities as the so-called extruder pumping, imbalances of rotating parts, cyclic
fluctuations of line speed or degree of foaming and/or periodic preheat non-uniformites.

While periodic fluctuations are, in general, hard to observe from the course of measured
diameter vs. time, an analysis of these data in the frequency domain allows for early
detection of periodically reoccuring fluctuations. These influences will show in the
spectrum as peaks, whose heigth indicates the periodic diameter fluctuations amplitude in
µm. Moreover, the computed FFT spectrum provides helpful information for identifying the
causes of cyclic irregularities during cable production, especially when changing any of
the production parameter like for example line speed.

FFT spectrum analysis and structural return loss (SRL) predictions are helpful tools for
detecting periodic cable diameter fluctuations and estimating their effects on the trans-
mission quality of the finished cable.

Use this monitor page to set all parameter needed before executing the analysis functions. See
the example below for explanation.

The most common method used for checking the quality of data and RF cables is the
measurement of structural return loss of a length of cable as a function of frequency within the
range of operating frequencies the cable is specified for. Structural return loss (SRL) is the ratio
- expressed in dB - between the fraction of input signal strength reflected by structural
fluctuations along the entire cable elength and the input signal strength.

In order to optimize cable quality an minimize the number of rejects, it is highly desirable to
detect problems due to periodic irregularities as soon as possible in the manufacturing process.
The online SRL prediction from short-time cable diameter values supplies according
information.

For the execurion of this analysis function the respective parameter settings must have been

4.5 Description

The LASER 2000 XY measuring head offers highest precision, reliability and efficiency together
with extremely small device dimensions. Advanced CCD technology, applied in combination
with laser diodes working as light sources and powerful, intelligent software guarantees meas-
uring values of highest precision.

The extremely short exposure time of 0,2 µs represents an outstanding feature of this non-
contact SIKORA measurement technique, thus providing precise measuring values all the time
even with vibrating measuring objects without guidance.

Light generated by a laser diode falls on the object to be measured. The resulting silhouette is
then received by a CCD. This image information is processed directly inside the measuring
head by an integrated signal processor. The value of diameter is then compared with the
nominal value and checked for keeping the tolerance limit. Error messages are sent together
with an according telegram to the serial or the Profibus Interface. Also available is the Option
Lump / Neckdown for detecting and evaluating lumps and neckdowns.

The device offers various interfaces so it can be connected to a computer, a PC or a display

unit like the REMOTE 2000 for example.

5. Fix measuring head by turning stop lever in

clockwise direction.

6. For swinging up the measuring head, for example

when connecting the cables, first unfasten measuring
head by turning the stop lever in counter-clockwise
direction. Then swing the measuring head in upwards
direction and, in this position, fasten it again to keep it
from swinging back uncontrolledly.

Note: For achieving the respective optimum position

for working, the angle of the stop lever handle can be
varied. Just slightly pull out the black (direction: away
from measuring head), it can then be turned into the
desired position. Then fix the handle again by pushing
it back into place.

7. When installing the connection cables, please do

note:
In order not to keep the measuring head from being
swung open, the connection cables must be of
sufficient length! Install the cables as shown in the
illustration to the left, so they run from the measuring
head through the holder and then around it.
