What is digital learning?

When we refer to digital learning, what we mean is the process of being a participant
of a teaching of any topic through the use of technology and most of the time using
the internet. Digital learning can take form in a blog, a video, a real-time lecture or
seminar or even just an audio file.

Digital learning will include at least one piece of technology such as

a computer, laptop or mobile phone. It's also often synonymous with distant learning
which refers to those studying away from a school, college or university. The Open
University is a great example of distance learning and if all the lessons are
completed using technology, then this would also be considered digital learning.

What's the difference between digital learning and e-learning?

You might be familiar with the term e-learning which referred to studying that was
completed online. The terms are extremely similar, as e-learning is now considered
to be an important part of digital learning, which has expanded to include other
topics.

Digital learning has taken over this term to refer to the devices and the use of the
internet to study. Digital learning can often give the student the opportunity to work at
a faster or slower pace as well as decide where the learning takes place (such as
with distance learners), it can sometimes also give students the flexibility to choose
which parts of a course or training scheme they wish to take advantage of.

If you are a student moving to digital learning, or an educator thrown in at the digital
deep end, we've created this fantastic blog to help you with the transition: Digital
Learning in 2021 - We’re Ready When You Are.

Advantages of Digital Learning

Digital learning has some amazing advantages! Two of the most notable advantages
is the opportunity for people to study the same content that others have without
having to be present in a location or signing up for a full course that can cost a lot of
money. It often eliminates the need for people to travel as they can access their
studying material from wherever they are regardless of location.

As much of digital learning is usually done using computers, laptops and phones,
there are more opportunities of creating backups of the work that you have
completed. You can save files locally on your computer, or you can upload these to a
cloud-based storage system such as Google Drive or The Cloud. This usually means
that you can also retrieve your files on multiple devices no matter where you are.

Digital learning also has other benefits. If you are word processing your essays or
reports, you can instantly spot and fix any spelling, punctuation and grammatical
errors. It also eliminates any uncertainty as to what a word may say due to different
styles of cursive being more or less legible than one another.

Another huge benefit of digital learning is that you will sometimes have access to
your course or learning materials 24/7. This means that anything you forgot to make
a note of or are struggling to remember, can be looked at whenever you need it.
Lectures and seminars are sometimes recorded and uploaded so that note-taking
can be kept to a minimum, as you can always replay what was said.

Disadvantages of Digital Learning

The biggest disadvantage of digital learning is the digital divide. When we talk about
the digital divide, we are referring to the percentage of people who have access to
the internet and digital devices and the percentage of those who do not. Digital
learning is not an option for those who have no access to either an internet
connection or a computer or mobile phone.

It is possible to buy CD-ROMs and software that contain learning materials or to be

given a hard drive containing digital learning files, but it is much more likely that you
will need to have an internet connection to remotely access files and folders on
remote servers. While many places have fibre networks spanning the length and
breadth of the country, not every location is kitted out to the same degree. You may
also find that only certain types of slower networks are available in rural areas, or
that cables are banned from being run underground in popular or busy locations.

Digital learning requires the use of a digital device. For some families, that is not
always possible. Many families still only have access to one shared digital device
such as a desktop computer and some don't have any computers at all and the
monthly cost of an internet connection is a luxury that they forgo. It often also means
having access to software for word processing or spreadsheet calculations, these
packages can cost a hefty sum but luckily some companies strive to provide these
resources in-browser for free.

Digital learning also means that the people who are enrolled in digital learning
courses and education must have some level of digital literacy for them to be able to
complete their studies successfully. For those who have never used a computer or
the internet, this could have a profound impact on how easily they can follow the
materials and contribute to the lessons. Students are often required to join video
calls (which require webcams, microphones and speakers) as well as sending
emails or uploading work.

Digital Learning Tools

So we've learned about some of the digital devices that students will use in digital
learning, but are there any other tools and resources to note?

Yes! Here are a few that we've left out:

 Word processing software to create documents

 PowerPoint presentations or other slides

 Digital or online flashcards

 Game design software

 Interactive whiteboards

 Online quizzes and educational games

5 Fun Ways to Promote Digital Learning

1. Create a computer club at school or outside it to investigate all kinds of new
electronics and gadgets that could be used in the classroom.

2. Try out fun EdTech applications in an educational setting to make learning

interactive and fun.

3. Challenge children to look into the history of recent technological

advancements. Computers only made it into schools in the early 1980s, and
even then they didn't have the range of options available to us today.

4. Introduce your learners to game design and have them invent and promote
their own educational game. There are plenty of programs to help them learn
how to do this, and it would be a great group project in class.

5. Take part in national digital learning events. This includes Digital Learning
Week. Don't know what that is? Keep reading to find out!

Digital Learning Week

Every year in May, National Digital Learning Week takes place. It is an event run by
Education Scotland to promote digital learning strategies in schools.

This is for teachers and students alike. Everyone can learn new things about
innovative technologies in the world around us – especially as they change so often
and so quickly!

One reason why you might want to take part in this event is because it's designed to
showcase the various uses for children's digital education in their future careers. So
many professions use technology everywhere in their jobs, so it's important to get
familiar with them as early as possible.

In addition to these technical skills, it can also encourage an interest in innovation

and problem-solving. Someone in your class might be the next big inventor – you
never know!

How do you get involved in Digital Learning Week?

We've created some fantastic resource packs for you to use in class or at home.
They're appropriate for Early Level, First Level, and Second Level learners
respectively.

Ask family members if they have any old technology lying around to compare with
modern day. This might include old games consoles, mobile phones, or computers.
What sort of change has occurred in the design of these pieces of technology over
the years and decades?

You can find out more about it here. Be sure to book it into your calendars!

Answer:
The limitations of a study are its flaws or
shortcomings which could be the result of
unavailability of resources, small sample size, flawed
methodology, etc. No study is completely flawless or
inclusive of all possible aspects. Therefore, listing
the limitations of your study reflects honesty and
transparency and also shows that you have a
complete understanding of the topic.

Generally speaking, the limitations are added in

the Discussion section, just before the concluding
paragraph. While you should definitely point out the
limitations, do not get into an elaborate discussion

about them. Keep this section short and crisp. The

limitations of a study basically discusses
any unanswered questions that your study did not
address. Could you have used another means or
method of data collection? Could the research design
have been better? Was the sample not representative
of the target population? Being self-critical and
acknowledging the study’s limitations will give the
impression that you are aware of what the study was
not able to cover. Moreover, it would prevent the
peer reviewer from pointing them out.
