Chp 1. Introduction to Topographical Maps
Q. Why are colors used in a map?
Ans. Colors are used to depict different types of physical, economic and cultural features. It would be difficult to interpret a map if colors are not used. Q. How do contour lines help determine the elevation of a point on a map? Ans. A contour line connects places of equal elevation on a toposheet. These lines show the height of the ground above or below the mean sea level. Q. Why are symbols used in a topographical map? Ans. Symbols are used to represent a specific feature or object on topographical sheets
Answer in a paragraph or two
Q1. What is the use of topographical map? Ans. A topographical map is generally used a base map, as it helps to draw other maps. Toposheets are used by government agencies in urban planning, resource development and survey. Hikers and climbers use toposheets to calculate the height of roads, hills and mountains. Q2. What are contour lines? Ans. A contour line connects places of equal elevation on a toposheet. These lines show the height of the ground above or below the mean sea level. If the lines are closer to each other, it represents steep slope and if the lines are far apart, it denotes a gentle slope or a flat terrain. Q3. What features are depicted using red color on toposheet? Ans. The red color depicts the grid lines (eastings and northings) and their numbering. Also it shows all roads (metalled and unmetalled), cart tracks, footpaths,or an object on topographical map. Q4. What features are depicted using brown color on a map? Ans .Different shades of brown are used to show relief features and elevation. Physical features such as sand hills, sand dunes and shifting sands are also depicted using brown color. Q5 Write a note on map scale. Ans. Map scale refers to the relationship between the distance on the map with its actual distance on the ground. It is the ratio of distance between two places on the map to their actual distance on the ground. Scaling ensures that all objects on the ground are proportionally represented on the map. It also helps calculate distance between two locations on Earth. Q6 Differentiate between the different types of scales used in the maps. Ans. A) Representative fraction: In this type of scaling, the numerator represents the distance on map and the denominator represents distance on ground. The value of numerator is always 1, and the numerator and denominator values have the same units. Eg: 1:50000 b) Linear or Graphical scale: This scale is similar to the ruler which consists of a straight line, which is divided into lengths that represents given distances on the Earth’s surface. c) Verbal Scale: Verbal scales are statement scales in which map scale is described in words. The statement that represents a scale includes the units. Eg: 1cm on map is equal to 25kms on ground is represented as 1cm: 25kms.
Map work Ans 1) 4 Ans 2) 200 m Ans 3) 220m Ans 4)180m
