Sheet (10)

Q1) In a short circuit test on a 220 kV, 3 Phase CB with earthed neutral the following
results were obtained. Fault pf = 0.4, recovery voltage = 0.9 of full line value; the
breaking current is symmetrical and the re-striking transient had a natural frequency
of 18 kHz. Determine RRRV, assuming that the SC is an earthed fault.
Q2) A 3-phase oil circuit breaker is rated at 1000A, 1500MVA, 33kV, 4s. Find the
rated normal current, symmetrical breaking current, making current and short time
current rating.
Q3) A 50Hz, 11kV, 3-phase synchronous generator with earthed neutral has a
reactance of 4 Ω per phase and is connected to busbar through a CB. The capacitance
to earth between the generator and the CB is 0.015 μF per phase and resistance may
be ignored. Find Maximum voltage across the contacts of the CB Frequency of the
transient oscillations. The average rate of rise of re-striking voltage up to the first peak
of the oscillation.
Q4) An 11 kV, 50 Hz alternator is connected to a system which has inductance and
capacitance per phase of 10 mH and 0.01 μF respectively. Determine (i) the maximum
voltage across the breaker contacts; (ii) Frequency of transient oscillation; (iii) the
average RRRV; and (iv) the maximum RRRV.
Q5) In a 220kV system the line to ground capacitance is 0.02 μF and inductance is 9
H. Find out the voltage appearing across the pole of a CB, if an instantaneous
magnetizing current of 6A is interrupted. Find the value of resistance to be used across
the contacts to eliminate the re-striking voltage.
Q6) A 66 kV, 50 Hz, 3-phase alternator has an earthed neutral. The inductance and
capacitance per phase of the system are 7 mH and 0.01 μF respectively. The short
circuit test gave the following results: Power factor of fault 0.25, fault current
symmetrical recovery voltage is 90% of full line voltage. Assuming that the fault is
isolated from the ground, calculate the RRRV.

Q7) In a short circuit test on a 3 pole, 110kV circuit breaker, the power factor of the
fault was 0.4, the recovery voltage was 0.95 times full line value. The breaking current
was symmetrical. The frequency of oscillation of restriking voltage was 15 kHz. The
neutral is grounded and the fault involves earth. Estimate the following:
a) The resriking voltage across the C.B after 3 ms.
b) The average rate of rise of restriking voltage.
c) The rate of rise of restriking voltage after 3 ms
d) If the power factor of the fault increased to 0.9, discuss what is its effect.
Q8) A 50 Hz, 3-phase generator with grounded neutral has L=1.6 mH per phase and
connect to a CB and C=0.003 μF. The CB opens when the rms value of current is 7500
A. Determine the following:
a) Maximum RRRV
b) Time for maximum RRRV
c) Frequency of oscillations
