REPORTING VERBS

VERB + TO + INFINITIVE

agree - zgadzać się, np. “Yes, I’ll come with you” -> He agreed to come with me.
decide - decydować, np. “I will go to university” -> He decided to go to university.
expect - oczekiwać, np. “I hope you will be a doctor” -> My dad expected me to be a doctor.
hope - mieć nadzieję, np. “ I hope I’ll get the best grade” -> I hoped to get the best grade.
offer - oferować, np. “Would you like me to carry it?” -> He offered to carry it.
promise - obiecywać, np. “I will study more” -> He promised to study more.
refuse - odmawiać, np. “No, I won’t come with you” -> He refused to come with me.
threaten - grozić, np. “Behave yourself or I’ll punish you” -> He threatened to punish me if I
didn’t behave myself.

VERB + SB + TO + INFINITIVE

advise - doradzać, np. “You should take a coat” -> He advised me to take a coat.
ask - prosić, np. “Please, put it away” -> He asked me to put it away.
instruct - instruować, np. “Insert your card and wait for the instruction to appear” -> He
instructed me to insert my card and wait for the instruction to appear”
invite - zapraszać, np. “Would you like to come to my house?” -> He invited me to go to his
house.
order - rozkazywać, np. “Stop talking” -> He ordered me to stop talking.
persuade - przekonać, np. “Don’t leave me” -> He persuaded her not to leave him.
remind - przypominać, np. “Don’t forget to pay the bill” -> He reminded me to pay the bill.
tell - kazać coś komuś zrobić, np. “Do your homework” -> Mum told me to do my homework.
warn - ostrzegać, np. “Don’t touch the switch” -> He warned me not to touch the switch.
beg - błagać, np. “Please, please wait for me” -> He begged me to wait for her.
encourage - zachęcać, np. “ Go ahead, phone her” -> He encouraged me to phone her

VERB + (preposition) + GEUND(-ING)


admit (to) - przyznawać, np. “Yes, I lied to her” -> He admitted to lying to her.
complain about - skarżyć się, np. “You never clean your room” -> He complained to me about
my never cleaning my room.
deny - zaprzeczyć, np. “No, I didn’t steal your wallet” -> He denied stealing my wallet.
insist on - nalegać, np. “You must wear warm clothes” -> He insisted on my wearing warm
clothes.
object to - sprzeciwiać się, protestować, “I won’t answer your question” -> She objected to
answering my question.
suggest - sugerować, np. “Let’s go to the cinema” -> He suggested going to the cinema.
REPORTING VERBS

VERB + SB + PREPOSITION + GERUND(-ING)

accuse sb of - oskarżać, np. “You broke the vase” -> He accused me of breaking the vase.
apologise to sb for - przepraszać kogoś za, np. “I’m sorry I upset you” -> He apologised for
upsetting me.
blame sb for - obwiniać kogoś o, np. “You broke it” -> He blamed me for breaking it.
complain about - skarżyć się, np. “You never clean your room” -> He complained to me about
my never cleaning my room.
congratulate sb on - gratulować komuś czegoś, np. “You passed the exam, well done!” -> He
congratulated me on passing my exam.
thank sb for - dziękować komuś za, np. “Thanks for helping me” -> He thanked me for helping
him.

VERB + THAT CLAUSE


(it means that after that we have to remember about switching tenses)

add - dodać, np. “And you should go to the dentist” -> He added I should go to the dentist.
admit - przyznać, np. “It is my fault” -> He admitted it was his fault.
agree - zgadzać się, np. “Yes, that is a beautiful hat” -> He agreed that it was a beautiful hat.
assure sb - zapewniać, np. “It is the most beautiful picture” → He assured me that it was the
most beautiful picture.
claim - twierdzić, np. “I know the answer” -> He claimed that he knew the answer.
confirm - potwierdzić, np. “We did it” -> He confirmed that we had done it.
deny - odmawiać, np. “I’ve never spoken to her” -> She denied that she had ever spoken to
her.
expect - oczekiwać, np. “You will be a doctor” -> He expected that I would be a doctor.
explain - tłumaczyć, np. “It is an easy recipe to follow” -> He explained that it was an easy
recipe to follow.
hope - mieć nadzieję, np. “I hope you will like it” -> He hoped that I would like it.
mention - wspominać, np. “I went there last week” -> She mentioned that she had gone there
the week ago.
promise - obiecywać, np. “I won’t lie to you again” -> He promised that he wouldn’t lie to me
again.
reply - odpowiadać, np. “I didn’t do it.” -> He replied that he hadn’t done it.
state - twierdzić, np. “I own this place” -> He stated that he owned that place.
suggest - sugerować, np. “You should go to the doctor” -> He suggested that I should go to the
doctor.
warn - ostrzegać, np. “ It will be painful” -> He warned me that it would be painful.
