Plan of Work for Week Beginning September 23, 2024

Grade: 1

Strand: Number Duration: 5 x 60 minutes

Subject: Mathematics

Focus Question: How do you know me?

Standard: Students will: demonstrate an understanding of numbers, types of numbers,


numeration systems, the relationship among numbers and apply number theory concepts
to compute fluently and solve problems.

Attainment Target:

● demonstrate an understanding of the ideas of sets.


● know the value of numerals and associate them with their names

Vocabulary: number, numerals, digit, sets, zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, ten,

Resources: number chart, textbook, counters, worksheet, number line.

Skills: identifying the numbers, matching numbers with number names, writing number
names and numerals, spelling number names, grouping,

Content Summary: Our number system is made up of the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,


9. When writing the number 10, we use the digits 1 and 0. The position of the digits are
very important. There is a difference between digits, numbers and numerals.

1. Digit - any number from 0 - 9.

2. Number - the quantity or amount. (how many?) Numbers are countable.

3. Numeral - A name, symbol or group of symbols to show a number. (words, ten

frames, tally marks, number line).


Numbers and numerals are terms that are used interchangeably. However, some believe
there is a difference. A number is an idea or concept; numbers are countable. Numerals
are symbols used to write numbers. When we count, we call numbers but when we write,
they are called numerals.

Each numeral has a number name. Numbers are also arranged in a serial order. Therefore;
1 comes after 0, 2 after 1, 3 after 2 and so on. When we order things we arrange them in a
particular pattern. We can order things based on different characteristics, such as size,
height etc. When we order numbers in serial order we order them starting with the
smallest value then the next smallest.
Number Line

Procedures/Activities:

DAY ONE: Identifying Numbers

Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to;

● identify numbers 0 - 10

Engage: Students will watch and listen to a song from YouTube, entitled “Let’s Learn
Our Numbers 0 - 10”. https://youtu.be/pzmB0GoEKkA?si=0Q9HDQ7_9SjiJe58.
Students and their teacher will discuss the numbers mentioned in the video. Students will
be introduced to the word “digit”. They will read from the whiteboard that digits are
single numbers used to create larger ones. Based on this definition, they will be asked
which numbers from 0 - 10 are digits and which number is not.

Explore: Selected students will be asked to come to the whiteboard and write a digit of
their choice. The class will state what that digit/number is. Students will then use their
fingers to represent that digit/number.

Example:

Explain: Students will be asked to think of places they see numbers everyday. Numbers
at home: clock face, remote control, telephone. Numbers at school: class/grade, numbers
of students in class, on a ruler, students’ age, date. Numbers in the community: Street
signs, numbers on vehicles, buildings. After the discussion, students will read from the
whiteboard that numbers are used to measure, label and count.

Extend: Students will count from 1 - 10.

Evaluate: Students who are struggling to form numbers and to identify numbers will
complete the worksheet below. More advanced students will complete pages 15 - 19 in
their rediscovering Mathematics textbook.

DAY TWO: Number Names

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;

● write number words 0 - 10.

Procedures/Activities:

Engage: Students will count from 1 - 10.

Explore: Students will participate in a treasure hunt. They will search the class for
approximately 5 minutes for number names. They will paste these found number names
vertically on the whiteboard. (The order in which the number names are placed on the
board is not of importance in this lesson).
Explain: Students will be asked to spell and call each number name. Selected students
will then write the correct numeral below each number name.

Extend: Students will work in groups to unscramble the following words.

DAY THREE: Ordering Numbers

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;

● place number 1 - 10 in serial order.

Procedures/Activities:

Engage: Students will discuss with their teacher what they've learnt in the previous
lessons. (Numbers - 0 - 10 and their number names).

Explore: Selected students will be given cut out numbers. These students will be asked
to come to the front of the class and arrange themselves in order, starting with the number
with the smallest value. They will discuss among themselves who should go first and the
students who should follow.

Explain: Once the exploration activity is completed, the rest of the class will be asked;

1. Are the numbers in the correct order?


2. Which number is the smallest?
3. Which child should be at the beginning of the line?
4. What number(s) would come next?

Once students are finished answering the questions and all misconceptions are corrected,
they will be asked what does the term order mean? (in their own words) and How can we
order things?

Extend: Students will work in their groups to arrange domino pieces, uno cards and
cards representing each number from 1 to 10. Students will be instructed to count the
pictures/dots or look at the numbers to order the given manipulative from 1 to 10. The
first group to correctly complete the activity will get tokens.
Evaluate: Students will complete page 35 in their Rediscovering Mathematics textbook.

DAY FOUR: Ordering Numbers (cont.)

Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to;

● place number 1-10 in serial order.

Procedures/Activities:

Engage: The numeral 5 will be written on the whiteboard. Two students will be given
markers. One child will be instructed to write the numeral that comes before 5 and the
other to write the number that comes after 5.

Explore: A number line will be presented to the students. On the number line, there will
be missing numbers. Students will count from 1-10, then will be asked, what are the
missing numbers?

example:

Explain: Students will read from a chart that a number line is a visual representation
of numbers on a straight line. Numbers are written in serial order on a number line.
A number line is used for counting, adding and subtracting.

Extend: Students will be asked to write numerals in the opposite order (10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5,
4, 3, 2, 1).

Evaluate: Students will complete the following worksheet.

DAY FIVE: Revision

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;

● identify numbers 0-10.


● place number 1-10 in serial order
● write number words 0 -10

Engage: Students will count from 1 - 10.

Explore: Students will fill in the blank spaces with the correct numbers.

0, 1 ___, 3, ___, 4, 5, 6, ___, 8, ___, 10

Explain: Students will discuss what they have learnt throughout the week. Each child
will get an opportunity to share with the class the lesson they enjoyed the most this week
and what they learned from that lesson.
Extend: Students will play a game of “Hangman” boys vs girls. Students will be asked
to guess the letters/number words based on the number of blank spaces on the board. For
example: ___ ___ ___ this could be two or ten. Students will say a letter until they have
figured out the word. The team that guesses the most correct number names wins.

Evaluate: Students will draw a number line in their notebooks with the teacher’s
assistance. Students will complete the number line by writing the numbers 0 - 10 on it.
They will then write the number name below each number on the number line.

Homework - Students will complete pages 24-33 and page 41 in their Rediscovering
Mathematics textbooks.
