o An Estimate may be defined as the determination of the
quantities of materials and probable cost of various items
of works in any Engineering construction like buildings,
roads, bridges etc.

o So, the estimate is the probable cost of a work and is

determined theoretically by mathematical calculations
based on the plans and drawings and current rates.
 A building Engineer is generally responsible for planning,
design, construction, operation, renovation and maintenance
of a building. By the knowledge of estimating a building
Engineer can guess easily about the total cost and quantity of
materials before starting a project.

 So to start or finish a building Engineering project safely and

successfully, a building Engineer should have the concept of
estimating.
Classification of estimate
• There are two types of estimating:
• (a) Approximate or rough estimate
• (b) Detailed estimate
 Locally available construction material
 Locally available skilled labours
 Cost of materials
 Nature of the project
 Transportation facilities
 Storage facilities of construction materials
 Nearness of electricity and water
 Skilled supervision
 Types of estimates;

 Organization of cost estimates;

 Estimating and costing for residential buildings;

 Estimation of slab, beam, column, footing;

 Analysis of rates, specifications, costing of

residential building.
