Experiment No – 19

Aim – To prepare a standard solution of Mohr’s salt (FAS- Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate) of M/10 molarity
in a 100 ml standard flask . Using this solution titrate the given KMnO4 solution and find out its molarity and
strength in g/ litre.

Material required :- Burette, burette stand, white tile, digital balance, funnel, pipette, 100 mL volumetric
flask, conical flask, spatula, beaker, test tubes with a stand, dil. H2SO4 and Mohr's salt.

Theory –
● It is a redox titration
● KMnO4 acts as an oxidizing agent in acidic medium.
● FAS acts as the reducing agent.
● The reaction takes place in presence of H2SO4 at room temperature.

Molecular reaction :
2 KMnO4 + 3 H2SO4→ K2SO4 + 2 MnSO4 + 3 H2O + 5 [O]
[2 FeSO4 (NH4)2SO4.6H2O +H2SO4 + [O] → Fe2(SO4)3 + 2(NH4)2SO4 + 13 H2O ]× 5
2KMnO4+8H2SO4+10FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O→K2SO4+ 2MnSO4+5Fe2(SO4)3+10(NH4)2SO4+68H2O

(Net reaction)

Ionic Equation –
MnO4- + 8 H+ + 5 e-→ Mn+2 + 4 H2O
(Fe2+→ Fe3+ + e- ) × 5
MnO4 + 8 H + 5 Fe2+→ 5 Fe3++ Mn2 + + 4H2O
- +

Formula for calculating weight of salt :

M=

WB = molarity × molecular mass ×

WB=

Indicator :
KMnO4 is a self-indicator.

End point:
Appearance of a pale permanent bright pink color.

Procedure:
● Weigh the required amount of Mohr’s salt and prepare a standard solution in a 100 ml flask, to the
flask add little water and then 1 test tube full of dil. H2SO4 should be added to this and dissolve the
crystal well and fill the flask up to 100mL mark.
● Wash all the apparatus and rinse the burette and pipette.
● Fill the burette with the given KMnO4.
● Pipette out 10 ml of standard solution of Mohr's solution in a conical flask. And add 1 test tube full
of dil. H2SO4 to it.
● Into the conical flask, add KMnO4 solution from the burette very carefully till a pale permanent pink
color appears.
● Note down the burette reading.
● Take at least 3 similar readings.

Observation and Calculations :

S.NO. Volume of FAS Burette Reading [ Volume of Volume of KMnO4 (V1) mL

(V2)mL KMnO4]
Initial Final
1 10 ml 0 ml
2 10 ml 0 ml
3 10 ml 0 ml

Concordant Reading of KMnO4 : ml

Calculations :
5 M1V1 = M2V2
(KMnO4) (FAS)
M1 and V1 are Molarity and Volume of KMnO4
M2 and V2 are Molarity and Volume of FAS

M1 =

= or 0.01 mole/ litre

Strength of KMnO4 = Molarity × Molecular mass

= = 1.58 g/ litre

Result :
● Molarity of the given KMnO4 is M or 0.01 mol/litre.
● Strength of the given KMnO4 is 1.58 g / litre.

Precautions :
1. The salt should be weighed very carefully.
2. Always remember to put 1 test tube full of dil. H2SO4 while preparing standard solution of FAS
solution.
3. The amount of H2O added to the standard solution flask should be very accurate.
4. The permanent pink color should appear by the addition of a single drop of KMnO4.
5. Titration should be performed at least with 3 concordant readings.
6. Keep swirling the contents of the flask slowly.
7. Remove air bubbles from the nozzle of the burette.
8. Be very careful while noting the end point, pink colour should be permanent.
